This episode opens with fresh music from Sweden's Brotherhood, whose new album, …Turn the Gold to Chrome…, has just been issued on Germany's afmusic. You can check out more of their post-punk/goth rock sound on their Bandcamp site.

Dead Can Dance have just started taking pre-orders for their much-anticipated first studio album in 16 years, Anastasis. As a gift to their many curious fans, they have released a digital single, which is featured on this episode (and available here). The album will be issued in multiple formats, to coincide with their Fall 2012 tour, which will hit Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on September 4th.

Incidentally, for those in the Nashville area, word on the street is that +SALVATION+ Gothic/Industrial Night will be giving away a pair of tickets to the Dead Can Dance show at their July 14th event. For those keeping tabs on Dragon*Con in Atlanta (Labor Day Weekend), I'll talk about some of the bands that have said they will be playing there this year, including South Carlina's Valentine Wolfe, whose macabre Steampunk ambience is featured on this episode.

Speaking of events, the brand new Calabrese album has finally landed, and it is GOOD. Dayglo Necros is another fine example of the 3 brothers serving up the catchiest and coolest horror rock in the world right now. You can score your own copy of it right here. Act quickly, and you may even be able to sink your fangs into some of the pre-order extras.

Ego Likeness has just issued the 4th volume in their Compass EP series, the long-awaited East. This one clocks in at more of an album's length, but I doubt anyone will complain about that part. The opening track, "-geist," is quite striking, so it is featured it on the way in to this episode's darkwave/ebm/industrial set. The EP is limited to only 300 CDs, but you can still order one of the last remaining copies here, if you hurry.

Also new to the show: A taste of new electro/darkwave from Until the Air Runs Out, the new album from Seattle's Nightmare Fortress; a further cut from Darker Days Tomorrow's new album, False Prophets; more new electro-cabaret from AlterRed's Dollstown album; a remastered and revamped cut from the 2nd installment of Suicide Commando's The Suicide Sessions collection; and more fresh Swedish post-punk from Svarta Hundar, who is featured on The Peter Out Wave compilation. Their track "Mörkt Vatten" has also yielded a video, which can be seen here.

All of that, PLUS: A post-birthday horror-rock nod to Glenn Danzig, a look back at the golden age of the oft-contested subgenre of Gothic Metal, more debuts, more horror soundtracks, more current & classic dark music, and the announcement of my next live DJ/Cult Film combo-appearance at Cult Fiction Underground in Nashville.

[EVENT PLAYLIST] Cult Fiction Underground: June 23rd, 2012

This past Saturday night, I started a new kind of event here in Nashville, combining my love for cult horror films, stylish settings, and dark music. The idea was to bring goth, post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, and horror music to a more relaxed setting, away from the dance floors of night clubs, where song-selection could be based on what fit the atmosphere, rather than what might fill a dance floor.

The result was not unlike a live version of the first hour of "Out ov the Coffin," which is one reason that I'm posting this playlist here. Of course, this live version was thrice as long, and you could have a beer and hang out with like-minded people while you listened. The tone for the night is set by a movie screening, held in the theatre next door to the Underground Lounge. In this case, it was Richard Blackburn's 1973 atmospheric horror classic, "Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural," which won a lot of new fans that night.

To clear any confusion, the following playlist is not related to an episode that can be streamed or downloaded -- although a new podcast is coming later this week. The playlist below shows precisely what I played for the first installment of this event, so everyone can get a good idea of what this night is about.

For those who wish to go to a night like this: "It is happening again!" On Saturday, July 28th, I will return to Cult Fiction Underground. The movie that night will be Jean Rollin's bizarre French zombie film, "The Grapes of Death" (1978). Mark your calendar & Bring a friend. The film will start at 10pm, and the music will begin immediately after the screening.

Otherwise, here's what I played this past Saturday night. Each artist's name below is also a link:

This episode is the first to be available as both a download and a stream. I have just created a Mixcloud account to make that possible, so if you'd like to simply stream this one, follow the link above, or scroll down to the bottom of this post and hit play. The stream has been time-stamped to help you tell what you're hearing at any given time.

____________

New to the show this time is a crop of more traditional goth and post-punk sounds. From the the UK, we have Angels of Liberty, who have several releases available on their Bandcamp site. I chose to start at the beginning, showcasing the title track from their Monster In Me EP (2011). It's an amazingly catchy and satisfying piece of energetic goth rock.

Also hailing from the UK, The Gaa Gaas make their debut on the show this time, flaunting their psyche-punk sound that evokes an early deathrock/batcave attitude. The song, "Hypnoti(z)ed" is taken from a new compilation from Peter Out Records, called The Peter Out Wave, which is intended to bring together acts from various scenes and countries that are (perhaps unintentionally) part of the new wave of post-punk. Grab it here.

Also featured on that compilation is France's Joy/Disaster, who have just released a new alt-post-punk album called Sickness. Their song "Suicide" is featured on both releases, as well as this episode. In the neo-classical realm, Portland, Oregon's Disemballerina have returned with another impressive new piece called "Sundowning," which is available on their Bandcamp site as well.

In the industrial realm, you'll hear a selection from the new Decoded Feedback album, disKonnekt; a remix from the latest Aesthetic Perfection single, A Nice Place to Destroy; an atypical cut from the new Grendel album, Timewave: Zero; and requested (and classic) music from the new Skinny Puppy live album, Bootlegged, Broke and Insolvent Seas. All of these releases are available now through Metropolis Records.

I also remember a couple of very different anniversaries on this episode: June 14th marks the 33rd anniversary of the release of Joy Division's classic debut "Unknown Pleasures," which originally fell into the hands of the already-in-the-know way back in 1979. And, on June 14th, 1956, the world saw the birth of Kim Petersen, who would later come to be known to the world as King Diamond.

Beyond that, this show is loaded with: Minimal neo-folk submissions, recently revisited film scores, current and classic goth-rock anthems, '90s-style doom, and '70s style atmosphere, in both musical and cinematic forms.

** AND... speaking of '70s style atmosphere, I will be DJing at Logue's Black Raven Emporium in East Nashville on Saturday June 23rd, alongside a screening of the classic 1973 film, Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural. It will be a lot like the first hour of "Out ov the Coffin," only in a live setting, with a bar. The Facebook event page is here, for more information.

*** The original version of this episode was taken down after a claim from B*rzum's representatives was filed. While that gets sorted out, I've uploaded an edited version of the show with that song removed. All references to that song have been edited out as well, to avoid confusion.

Welcome to another episode that is simply loaded with new music.

The UK's AlterRed makes their debut on this episode with a selection from their Dollstown album. Their sound is a blend of electro and cabaret, which has drawn comparisons to such acts as IAMX; hence, I paired the two acts in the first set.

Out of Scotland comes The Twilight Sad, whose video for the song "Another Bed" caught my eyes this week. The song, which is included on this show, is taken from their latest album, No One Can Ever Know.

On the heels of the last show's debut of the UK's Terminal Gods, the band has decided to make a free, online release of their previous EP of traditional goth rock, Genesis, from which you'll hear a song on this episode. Get that EP for yourself, right here.

Also not to be missed: Another extremely catchy song from Brooklyn's Night Vision, whose brand of new darkwave continues to stick in my head. You can still grab their EP for free, right here, while it lasts.

Darker Days Tomorrow makes its debut on this episode as well, premiering a song from their 3rd, and latest, album False Prophets. The band currently has a Kickstarter campaign underway to fund the production of a music video, so if you'd like to join the cause, go here.

On the instrumental side of the fence, Italy's Chemical Waves provides a new track from their Sweet Candy Bullets EP (free right here), as does the Czech Republic's Tongue, with a track from their At the Beginning... album (free right here). You'll also hear new dark ambient selections from Sweden's Necrophorus and Poland's Atum, whose latest EP can be downloaded here.

During the industrial portion of the show, you'll hear a track from T.A.L.O.S., the latest from the Greek band PreEmptive Strike 0.1, along with a pair of excerpts from Alan Silvestri's score for the new Avengers film, which are wrapped around the new single from Dutch aggro-tech/ebm band Grendel, taken from their latest album Timewave: Zero. Incidentally, the video for that title track can be viewed here.

Towards the end, in the dark metal portion of the show, you'll hear a further cut from Anhedonist's new Netherwards album. Closing the show is a 30-minute epic taken from the latest Aldebaran CD, Embracing The Lightless Depths, available now from Profound Lore Records.

All of that, plus classic, current, and cult deathrock, goth, wave, metal, and more!
