EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This episode of "Out ov the Coffin" begins with two lesser-played Joy Division tracks, joined together to honor the memory of Ian Curtis, who left us 36 years ago this month. There is no denying the role of Ian and Joy Division in shaping the current revival of post-punk music, so the first new entry on this episode comes from San Francisco's In Letter Form, whose new album Fracture. Repair. Repeat is sure to catch the ears of those who have loved both the original Joy Division sound, as well as the current wave of acts, like Interpol

Requested current music from Iceland's Kælan Mikla comes in next, setting a dark, subdued tone that leads nicely into a vault-song from the sadly defunct Projekt Records band Tearwave. Much-anticipated new music from The Legendary Pink Dots follows, giving us the first taste of their latest psychedelic odyssey, Pages of Aquarius.

The set concludes with a spotlight on the current Modern English tour, which will be arriving in Nashville on Saturday May 28th. Local post-punk band Krovi comes up first, followed by the arthouse deathrock of Atlanta's Entertainment, and finishing with a post-punk classic from the first Modern English LP, Mesh & Lace, which the band will be performing in full on this tour, along with early singles like the ubiquitous "I Melt With You."

The next talk break begins with some atmosphere from Xiu Xiu's latest release, which sees the band paying musical tribute to the music of Twin Peaks, in their own particular language. Other talk breaks on the show focus on the cult '70s atmospheric horror soundtracks to "Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural" (1973) and the Czech New Wave gem, "Morgiana" (1972). Later on in the show, the breaks will feature recent music from Zombi and an ambient track from the new ROME EP.

The second set begins with more new music from original California deathrockers Altar de Fey, whose new album Echoes in the Corridor is already quite the contender for year-end "Best Of..." lists. The set then descends into the vaults for a triple-shot of '80s deathrock classics from Arch Criminals45 Grave, and The Danse Society, as well as a pair of '90s goth classics from Corpus Delicti and Witching Hour.

The third set kicks in with more new music from New York's Bootblacks, whose Veins album has now subtly lodged its post-punk/wave hooks in me, for one. Turning to more darkwave territory, a track from The KVB's new ...Of Desire album arrives next, followed by another somewhat recent song from Arizona's Body of Light. A vault obscurity from SS-Say then leads us to more pummeling new industrial from Youth Code's latest, Commitment to Complications.

The next set starts with an excerpt of Wolvserpent's "Aporia:Kāla:Ananta," the single 40-minute song that comprises the Idaho band's latest EP. The full experience should really be had, of course, when you find yourself properly prepared, at least. Next, Australia's The Night Terrors make their late, but very welcome, debut, evoking all the right elements of classic '70s Euro-horror soundtracks, and leading into a new ritual ambient/experimental track from Oregon's Hail, taken from their new album, Oneiric Annihilation

Sadly, this episode also closes with music to honor the departed. In this case, somebody many of us knew and loved, Adrian Guerra (founding member of Seattle's Bell Witch) who died last week, on May 17th. It is with a very heavy heart that I close the last full set with what is said to be his last recording -- with fellow Seattle band Morose -- then, finally, close the episode with a song from the last Bell Witch album that he played on, which is also their latest full length, Four Phantoms. Rest in peace, Adrian. You were taken far too soon.
