PODCAST: October 20th, 2011

[DOWNLOAD this episode (128k mp3)]

This week's show begins with a nod to one of the godfathers of horror cinema, Mr. Bela Lugosi, whose October 20th birthday could not be overlooked on a show such as this. It's hard to believe, but Bela was born back in 1882, so he would have been 129 this year, were he not (un)dead. Having recently re-watched "The Hunger" (1983), I found a renewed interest in the extremely well-used Bauhaus classic "Bela Lugosi's Dead," so for multiple reasons, this was the week to roll that song out at the top of the show.

For new music this week, you will hear further dark entries from Zola Jesus, who will be hitting Atlanta this coming Tuesday (Oct. 25th), as her Conatus tour arcs through the South. You'll also hear new material from a cavalcade of Metropolis Records artists, including Diary of Dreams, System Syn, and Imperative Reaction.

Further into the industrial spectrum, this week's show features a first-taste of HandOver, the forthcoming album from industrial pioneers, Skinny Puppy. Local Nashville artists Cryogen Second spill forth with another fine track from their Anthem for the Great Self Destruct album, as well.

Also on this week's show: New black metal sounds from Portland's Chasma, some not-to-be-forgotten local deathrock/goth, a blanket of ethereal pieces during the first set, and much more.

PODCAST: October 6th, 2011 - World Zombie Day Edition

[DOWNLOAD this episode (128k mp3)]

This Saturday, October 8th, is World Zombie Day. How could I resist that, you ask? I couldn't. Hence, this week's show, which started out just having one zombie-themed set, has now exploded into an entire zombie-themed episode. Of corpse, not all of the selections are *about* zombies, per se, but many of them certainly are, and each title fits into a larger picture of living death, walking corpses, necrophilia, communion with the deceased, and other brain-eating topics.

So, what does World Zombie Day really mean? It's a day set aside for people all over the world to celebrate their zombie fandom by dressing up like corpses and participating in large zombie walks. In Nashville, The 2011 Nashville Zombie Walk will take place this Saturday afternoon, October 8th, starting at Riverfront Park in lovely downtown Nashville. If you wish to "Walk Among Us," we start gathering at 3pm, then walk at 4pm. And please, if you're joining us, remember to bring some canned food for donation to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle TN.

Can't make it to a zombie walk, but wish to donate anyway? You can participate in this year's Virtual Food Drive. Just click what you'd like to donate, adjust the quantity, and checkout just like you would in any online store.

Aside from 2 hours of songs chosen to suit the theme of undeath and the dead, this episode also features some new material. The current line-up of The Misfits have just released a new album entitled The Devil's Rain. You'll hear a cut from that, so you can decide whether you'd like to catch them on their current tour.

Also new to the show this week: Falloch, out of Scotland, who close this episode with a track from their new album Where Distant Spirits Remain. They have been billed as "post black metal," but I would compare them more to a band like Alcest, who clearly do exhibit some black metal influences, but land more in the realm of what I'd call indie-metal -- scary thought? You tell me.
