Dragon Con, Dragon Con, Dragon Con!!!

This episode is (unofficially) all about Dragon Con, THE ultimate Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Comic Book, Horror, Pop-Culture, Film, Television, Music, Art, and everything-else-that's-cool convention, held annually in Atlanta, Georgia over Labor Day Weekend (August 29th - September 2nd this year). In addition to panels, parties, and costuming, they also happen to feature a number of concerts from Darkwave, Industrial, and Goth bands, which is how I was first drawn into the fold back in 2005.

This episode features sounds and songs entirely related-to and inspired-by this year's guests, fan panels, and bands that will be performing live -- including music from The Cruxshadows, Voltaire, Angelspit, Abney Park, Unwoman, and a brand new track from Calabrese. Panel and event highlights for me this year include a screening of "Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut," preceded by a Q&A with the lead actors (FB event page HERE), and a panel on "The Return of the Living Dead," with star Linnea Quigley ("Trash") and production designer William Stout.

Last year's Dark Fantasy & Horror Track covered so much that it was split into two tracks this year: The Urban Fantasy Track, and the all-new Horror Track, of which I am the Assistant Director. Both new tracks are located at the Westin this year.

Since I work for the Horror Track, there are many references to the panels, guests, and topics we're presenting this year (see our full schedule HERE), but my Dragon Con coverage is not limited to just what we're doing. This episode goes all over the map of Geekdom, as one might call it: Horror, Comics, Sci-Fi, Cartoons, Dark & Weird Music, etc.

On the playlist below, you will find not only the list of everything played on this podcast, along with links to each artist featured, but you will also find my notes on where to catch each related guest or performer at the convention (in small print below each name) -- because I'm here to help. Of course, you'll want to check the Official Program Guide to make sure of these times, or install one of their many Smartphone Apps HERE (for Android, iPhone, or Other devices).

If this podcast serves its purpose, it will turn you on to some attractions at Dragon Con that you might not have considered. Failing that, it should at least get you as excited to hurry up and get there as I am right now. So, grab this episode and listen to it on the ride down, or stream it while you're packing up your costumes, and I'll see you at the Con!

NOTE:  This podcast is independently produced, and not officially endorsed by Dragon*Con. 'Nuff said.

Also: If you're wondering what panels I will be moderating this year, here's the list:
  • Friday 5:30pm: "State of the Goth Scene" [Roswell, Westin]
Our annual discussion of how the goth/industrial/darkwave scene is doing, from the perspective of bands, DJs, and fans alike. Panelists: Rogue & Jess (The Cruxshadows), Zoog (Angelspit), DJ Spider, Gopal Metro (Bella Morte, Brighter Fires)
  • Saturday 1pm: "The Return of the Living Dead" [Atlanta, Ballroom, Westin]
"You ever fantasize about being killed?" Come help me interview some of the people responsible for the greatest horror/comedy ever made! Bring a Q and get an A. Panelists: Linnea Quigley ("Trash"), William Stout (Production Designer; father of "Tarman" and the zombies).
  • Saturday 5:30pm: "Music Video TerrorVision"  [Roswell, Westin]
A special screening of music videos from our band guests, with live Q&A, commentary, and making-of stories. Featuring the premiere screening of the Cruxshadows new "Valkyrie" video! Panelists: Calabrese, The Cruxshadows, Angelspit.
  • Sunday 7pm: "That Old Black Magic" [Imperial Ballroom, Marriott]
An amazing (upside-down)cross-section of actors discuss being "evil" on screen. Panelists: Doug Bradley (Hellraiser); Julian Sands (Warlock); Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth); Linnea Quigley (Night of the Demons); Nicholas Vince (Hallraiser).

NOTE: The Horror Track is located in the Westin, with most panels based out of the Roswell room on the 8th floor (two floors up from the entrance level), but some of our panels will be held in larger rooms, such as the Westin's Peachtree and Atlanta Ballrooms, or the larger halls in the Hyatt or Marriott.

After a dozen missed connections, much-loved and oft-recommended dark folk/country/goth singer/songwriter Chelsea Wolfe finally makes her debut on this episode with "We Hit a Wall," taken from her greatly anticipated forthcoming album, Pain is Beauty.

If the mention of dark folk/country, or the mere thought of unlit tales of Americana grabs your attention, then you will want to stick around to hear the latest release from Denver's Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots, whose new self-titled album is sure to appeal to fans of Nick Cave, Ghoultown, and even Voltaire, with whom I believe they'd make an interesting bill.

Also in the realm of neo-folk with a dark twist, Spain's Sangre del Muerdago make their debut on the show this time, with a track from their classically-influenced new album, Deixademe Morrer no Bosque. If all this talk of dark folk has you concerned, though, never fear. The traditional goth rock sound of Sweden's Brotherhood returns to the show on this episode, with a cut from the duo's latest release, simply entitled The Dark EP.

Speaking of returns, we'll dip into a second track from The Gethsemane Option, the latest from from psychedelic darkwave masters The Legendary Pink Dots, who probably wouldn't mind sharing a bit of the ether with a newcomer to the show this time, in the form of Leila Abdul-Rauf, known for her work with such bands as Hammers of Misfortune and Amber Asylum. Her new album, Cold and Cloud, is a landscape of ethereal vocals and dark ambient textures, featuring artwork by  Tor Lundvall.

You'll hear all of that, PLUS:  Further French-Canadian dark metal selections from the latest Sombres ForĂȘts and Monarque albums; The unintentional (but serendipitous) pairing of two cult Czech artists; A nod to Sytem Syn's attempt to crowd-fund some new music videos; several great finds from the vault; and much more...
