EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:
This episode opens with two pensive neo-classical selections, probably influenced by the atmosphere of the current season. The first is new from Portland's uniquely styled and named Disemballerina, whose latest album Poison Gown has just seen digital release (here). Second, flowing sonically, if not thematically, from the first, is a classic and seldom-heard track from The Legendary Pink Dots, a band that simply has been on my mind a lot as of late.
The first full set begins with a deeper selection from the new Soft Kill album, Heresy. The band has just announced a whole slew of dates for next year, including some great opening slots for bands like Clan of Xymox and Modern English. Also hitting the road in a big way next year will be The Cure (!!!), who close this set filled with overlooked and underrated selections from the vault, as well as more somber autumnal selections.
The second main set is filled with new bands and releases, beginning with The Hearse, a straightforward gothic rock act out of the UK, which is something we certainly need right now. Coming up quickly behind that is new music from L.A.'s Sextile, from their new album A Thousand Hands, followed by a short-but-interesting new track from Australia's Masses, taken from their brand new split with Death Church.
The next set begins with new music from Belgium's eyebrow-raising Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat, who add a bit more electro to their recent explorations in darkwave on their new To Live Vicariously album. After dipping a bit further into the new Cold Showers album, Matter of Choice, we drop by Paris for a double shot from Hélène de Thoury, member of both Hante. and Minuit Machine, two impressive new darkwave/synth bands that I can't seem to stop listening to lately. Look for new material from Minuit Machine on the December episode, in fact.
Finally, the set draws to a close with something new from Seattle's Grave Babies, taken from their new Holographic Violence album, the edge on which leads gracefully into the next set, which begins with some almost doom-laden new post-punk from L.A.'s Deth Crux. A band who needs no introduction then grabs the set by the throat: Killing Joke, with a taste of the closing track from their new Pylon album, which has already started receiving rave reviews. Killing Joke will also hit the road in 2016, with tickets already on sale now.
The metal begins in earnest with Cardinal Wyrm's new digital single, a cover of the Bathory classic "Enter the Eternal Fire." Get it here. Pinkish Black then steps in with a song from their new (and also acclaimed) album, Bottom of the Morning. After an absolute master-classic from My Dying Bride, the show concludes with the accidentally-amazing Chipmunkson16speed, a project that involves capturing old Chipmunks records, played at very slow speeds, with often haunting results. In this case, an ethereally-damned take on the Belinda Carlisle classic "Heaven is a Place on Earth," which sounds -- in this incarnation -- like the soundtrack to somebody slowly bleeding to death in the Black Lodge. Yes.
All of that, PLUS: An unrealized soundtrack selection by Von Hertzog, taken from the new Retro Promenade tribute/compilation, Argento; Revisited soundtracks old and new; Selections from the deathrock, goth, and post-punk vaults; and more!
