EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:
Arriving on the last possible day of February 2017, this episode begins with a further cut from The Agony In Memory EP by Dallas, Texas band, Garden of Mary, who are already in the studio at press time, recording new material for a future release. We look forward to that, even as we look back, during the next song, on the career of Bill Paxton (May 17, 1955 – February 25, 2017), who sadly died too early this week. In this case, a selection from the soundtrack to the greatly underappreciated Near Dark serves as a small tribute to the man's on-screen charm and style.
The start of the first full set sees me catching up on a release that I never got to last year, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds latest, Skeleton Tree, the making of which was profiled in the stark and moving documentary film, One More Time With Feeling. By nature, it can be a scattered and difficult album and film, due to the tragic circumstances that colored its creation, but it's worth delving into. Following that, you'll hear deeper cuts from the excellent new ROME album, The Hyperion Machine, and the equally heralded new Soft Kill album, Choke, as well. After our second dip into the vaults of 1987, you'll hear another new track from the UK's FEHM, before wrapping up the set with new post-punk/darkwave from Italy's Winter Severity Index.
The next set is rife with deathrock sounds, new and old. We begin with a taste of Blood Lust, the brand new demo/EP from Louisville's The Kentucky Vampires, before jumping into a classic from 45 Grave. Circling back to France in 2014, we revisit Varsovie's album, L'Heure et la Trajectoire, giving the center of the set a more post-punk lining. Never fear, though, as we slide back to 1981 for a classic from The Mob, before closing the set with a semi-new track from NYC's Elysian, who recently changed their name from Maudlin, and left their original base of Atlanta, for what I imagine to be brighter (darker?) deathrock pastures.
The third set begins with a brand new Votive Offering from the UK's Artefact, who are quickly followed by more deathrock flavor from L.A.'s The Wraith. The band, which features ex-members of Lost Tribe and Cinema Strange, has now issued their first physical release, in the form of the Shadow Flag EP. Next up is a further cut from Bestial Mouths, who are hitting the road in the US in March (Nashville on March 22nd) to support their latest Cleopatra Records album, Heartless. Next, some brand new alien darkwave from Drab Majesty's The Demonstration enters gracefully, holding the door open for a deeper cut from The Rain Within's new Dark Drive album. This time, we get the track "Murder," for which there is now a cool new video.
The dark metal portion of the show is comprised entirely of new music this month, beginning with a song from the practically-obscure 2016 cassette-only release from Portland's recently revamped Atriarch, We Are All Dead. Following that, I finally get into the latest from Neurosis, with a track from their Fires Within Fires. A further taste of Ash Borer's The Irrepassable Gate comes next, before closing the set with an outlandish new one from Germany's Paria, taken from their Knochenkamp album. Lastly, the show closes with a lengthy new track (clocking in at almost 30 minutes!) from Cultes Des Ghoules' latest black metal theatre-piece, Coven, or Evil Ways Instead of Love.
All of that, PLUS: 30th and 40th anniversary nods to horror classics "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" and "Suspiria," respectively; Synthwave flavors from the currently-touring Carpenter Brut; Some unreleased '80s horror soundtrack magic; and more!
