EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:
As mandated by the dreaded, wet heat of the south (and travel), this show has been slow to emerge, but here it is: The July 2017 edition of "Out ov the Coffin." We begin this month with a special tribute to the life and work of legendary film maker, George A. Romero (February 4, 1940 – July 16, 2017), who died last week at the age of 77. Few need to be reminded that Romero is the father of the zombie genre as we know it, but he gave us more than just the living dead, so the opening set attempts to balance songs and sounds from, and about, his well-known work (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead) with something less often praised (1978's Martin). Rest in peace, George, and thank you for all you accomplished.

Following that introduction, the show moves into a long list of new music, starting with a catchy new single from rising UK post-punk act Chain of Flowers, which is followed quickly with more new post-punk from Portland's Spirit Host, taken from their new Howl album. On the verge of both a new album AND a US tour with Aurelio Voltaire, Bella Morte jumps in next with a b-side from their latest maxi-single, One Bright Soul In This Emptiness, which also leans more to the post-punk side of the fence. Dipping back to last year for an overlooked item, we next hear from Italy's European Ghost, before getting a taste of Oakland's Fearing, whose A Life of None strikes a somber tone next to the former's more upbeat post-punk approach. Mummy Calls is the last stop of the set, included here to honor the 30th anniversary of the 1987 summer vampire film classic, "The Lost Boys."
The second set springs (back) to life with some further new deathrock sounds from Chile's Diavol Strâin, taken from their Demonio EP. Keeping in the deathrock vein, we then hear a new single from multi-continental act Air Hunger, which leads into a classic moment from Fields of the Nephilim before sliding into a lo-fi track from Horror Vacui's 2017 flexi, Die Schwarzen Keller Session. We then hear a closely-related pair of songs from members of Germany's Bloody Dead and Sexy: First, a taste of two of the members' more low-key side-project, Psi Club, then a previously unreleased track taken from the full band's new retrospective collection, Crucifixion Please!.
The third set explores more synth and electronic territory, starting with a new song from Skinny Puppy-and-Legendary Pink Dots-collaboration The Tear Garden's The Brown Acid Caveat. A double-shot of new music from right here in Nashville comes next, first from FIRES, who have taken the unusual step of releasing their remix collection ahead of their debut album, then from relative newcomers Other Voices, who take a soulful approach to their new wave/post-punk sound, not unlike Krovi (with whom they share a member). We then hear a debut from Michigan's Osseovs, whose lo-fi darkwave might appeal to fans who already miss Tollund Men. Finally, the set concludes with a classic from Belfegore's self-titled 1984 album.
The dark metal section of the show begins in a relatively non-metal fashion, with new music from France's Les Chants du Hasard, whose black-metal-esque style is crafted without the use of guitars, bass, or drums, opting instead for classical instrumentation. We then get another taste of Seattle's Isenordal, diving deeper into their Shores of Mourning cassette, before getting another great taste of Light of the Morning Star's Nocta LP. The set rounds out with new music from Ides of Gemini's seemingly deathrock-infused new LP, Women, before the whole show eventually concludes with an overlooked new, and much heavier, track from Spectral Apparition's 2016 Manifestation EP.
All of that, PLUS: Music from the new Castlevania animated series by Trevor Morris; Further new soundtrack work from Jim Williams' "Raw" score; Fresh dark ambient from Of Earth and Sun; selections from the horror punk, darkwave, and goth vaults; and more!
