EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:
The busiest season of the year has arrived, and as a result, you have arrived at the steps of what has been dubbed the Late Summer 2022 episode of "Out ov the Coffin." This extended episode covers both July AND August, as a great deal of impending travel and planning will prevent two separate episodes. In the interest of entertainment, I have thrown a spotlight on the two main inspirations for all of this activity: Dragon Con 2022 and Psycho Las Vegas. So, in addition to the stack of new releases you've come to expect from every episode, you will also hear three special sets that highlight some of the standout bands who will playing at these two massive events. But more on that later...
This episode opens with my monthly Ukrainian Trident, as I've come to call it, better explained as three songs that are either by Ukrainian artists, or written/released for or about the plight of Ukraine, as they continue to fight the Russian invasion of their homeland. First, we hear new music from ВОЛОК (Volok), a Kiev-based act that combines dark ambient atmosphere with the kind of vocals that would haunt a nocturnal Eastern European cathedral on their latest release, Аз Есмь. Second, we hear a song from Defiance, the new EP by neo-folk favorites ROME, which was written in support of the Ukrainian plight, even going so far as to include the Ukrainian national salute, "Slava Ukraini," in the lyrics of "The Brightest Sun." Third, as we glide into the first talk break, you will hear some new Ukrainian dark ambient from Shadowsun's Last Incarnation of Moloch.
The first full set of the night is a collection of brand new 2022 releases, mostly digital singles, from a variety of current post-punk, goth, and darkwave acts. First up is the new single from The Bellwether Syndicate (feat. William Faith of Faith and the Muse + long-running Chicago DJ Scary Lady Sarah). "Dystopian Mirror" is an instant post-punk banger, the video for which premieres August 5th. Sweden's The Secret French Postcards are up next with the standalone single "Dreaming At Last," followed by Germany's Golden Apes, with their standalone single "From the Sky." We then dip into the sacred vaults of France's number one goth export, Corpus Delicti, for a previously unreleased home demo that appears on their brand new collection, The Complete Recordings, 1992-1996.
Returning to the present, we continue set 1 with an amped up new single from Belgium's A Slice of Life, which is followed by a track from the excellent new Kill Shelter album, Asylum. Although this track features Antipole, who teamed up with Kill Shelter for their last full length, this new album features collaborations with a variety of talented artists like Ronny Moorings of Clan of Xymox and the aforementioned William Faith. Rest assured, those will be featured in future episodes. Finally, the set closes with the latest single (and video) from Sweden's A Projection, who continue their successful mix of synthwave and traditional post-punk on "Careless."
Set two turns the spotlight on Dragon Con 2022! For the uninitiated, Dragon Con is a massive convention held in Atlanta, Georgia, focusing on every aspect of fandom and nerdity you can imagine (Sci-fi, fantasy, comics, film, horror, art, etc.) every Labor Day Weekend. In this case, we are going to focus mainly on the music aspect, with a set that includes brand new singles from four of the bands that will be performing this year.
First up is Vision Video, giving us a taste of their forthcoming album Haunted Hours, in the form of new single, "Promises." Fellow Goth Dad Aurelio Voltaire sails in next, with a taste of his forthcoming Black Labyrinth album, which features guest spots from many former members of David Bowie's bands. It's only fitting, then, that the lead single is a medley of songs from the Labyrinth movie soundtrack, which is an idea that simply cannot fail to whip up the Dragon Con crowd. After having to skip the convention circuit last year, missing Dragon Con for the first time in over a decade, The Cruxshadows return this year, armed with a brand new pay-what-thou-wilt single "All the White Horses (Into the Mirror Darkly)." And, finally, the Horror Track's house band, Valentine Wolfe, round out this set with a selection from their forthcoming full-length, Lullabies, Love Songs, and Laments. Of special note this year will be the band's live scoring of the ultimate silent film classic, Nosferatu (1922), in honor of its 100th anniversary. Time and location TBA.
Those who attend Dragon Con may know me from my work on the Dragon Con Horror Track (follow us on Facebook / Instagram), where I do the goth panels each year. It is too early (at press time) to provide exact times for all the goth-interest events this year, but watch this space for an update when the schedule is released. What I can say right now is that the main Goth Panel this year is planned for Friday evening in the Horror Track room, AND later that night, we will be throwing our first official Goth Party ever! "The Open Casket Party: A Goth Night at Dragon Con" will take place Friday night, September 2nd, from 10pm - 12:30am, in the Regency VI-VII Ballroom at the Hyatt. I will be DJing, along with Goth Dad + Twin Powers (from Vision Video), DJ Spider, and DJ Black Sunshine. You can find the Facebook event page here for details. And here is the flyer:
Set three finds us marking a whole slate of anniversaries for landmark albums in the realms of goth, industrial, metal, and beyond, as well as going deeper into a pair of new releases. We begin by marking the 35th anniversary of the best Dead Can Dance album of all (IMHO), before sharing a second track from the new October Burns Black album, Two Worlds Collide. Then, because it just makes sense to do so, a deeper cut from the new CALABRESE EP, Death Cult, is paired with their unofficial father Danzig, to honor the 30th anniversary of his third album, How the Gods Kill. After that, we take what might be an unexpected trip to Germany to salute Rammstein on the 25th anniversary of their breakthrough album, Sehnsucht. While I may be tired of the singles from that album, "Klavier" is on another level entirely. Meanwhile, from that same year in Sweden, we revisit Tiamat's A Deeper Kind of Slumber for its 25th, and close the set by marking the 30th anniversary of Ministry's major left-field breakthrough album, Psalm 69 (69, 69, 69!).
The remaining sets in this episode are dedicated to highlighting just a fraction of the many, many bands that will be playing Psycho Las Vegas this year -- at least the ones that fit the scope of this show. For those unfamiliar, Psycho Las Vegas is an annual summer music festival which gathers artists from across popular music, but largely from the darker sub-genres. Among the 100 or so bands slated to play this year are legendary names from the second wave of black metal, classics from the '80s/'90s dark metal scene, and a collection of great bands from the current post-punk/darkwave and metal scenes. To spice these sets up, I've selected a song from each band that represents what I'd like to hear them play live -- sometimes a favorite older cut, sometimes their latest work.
Set 4 focuses mainly on the darkwave, post-punk, experimental, and dark metal acts that I most look forward to seeing at Psycho, offering up selections from Turkey's surprise breakthrough artists She Past Away, legendary industrial/ebm act Nitzer Ebb, current darkwave favorites Twin Tribes, and the post-punk crossover success story that is Soft Kill. Eclectic and unpredictable Norwegian legends Ulver will likely surprise us all with the direction they choose for their set, considering the breadth of styles they have to choose from in their catalogue. Also representing several style shifts over the years, from death/doom and dark metal to dark rock and sometimes back, are Peaceville-sound icons Katatonia and Paradise Lost.
Set 5 brings us into full metal overdrive, as we continue the Psycho LV spotlight, kicking it off with Swiss legends Samael, who are also no strangers to style shifts between albums, before launching into a recent track from notorious black metal legends Mayhem. Sliding into more modern black and dark metal territory, we then highlight how stoked I am to see more recent acts Wolves in the Throne Room, Tribulation, and Devil Master, before landing in cult-status territory with a classic from headliners Mercyful Fate. My hands-down favorite song from Rotting Christ rounds out the set, before ultimately closing the show with the opening tracks from co-headlining act Emperor's 1997 black metal essential, Anthems to the Welkin At Dusk, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. I expect that occasion to be marked in their set, for sure.
And those two sets represent just 15 of my most anticipated bands that are playing Psycho Las Vegas 2022. If you are also going this year, feel free to drop me a line and let me know. Perhaps we can catch up while running to our 47th show of the weekend...
All of that PLUS: New soundtrack music from the "Stranger Things 4" score by Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein; Multiple film anniversaries to mark in the breaks; Selections from the vaults; and more!
