EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

While not a proper Christmas special, the December episode of Out ov the Coffin begins with a few selections along those lines, and you'll find several other odd (and I mean odd) seasonal choices sprinkled in throughout. For the most part, this episode is all about new material, as we prepare for the "Best ov 2015" episode that will come out next month.

As is the tradition, The Cruxshadows have given their fans a Christmas present in the form of a brand new holiday-related song -- so new, in fact, that it actually didn't make the original recording of this episode. Never fear, though, I tacked it on to the very beginning as a pre-show bonus track. Grab your own copy as a pay-what-you-feel donation from their website.

As the show formally begins, you will hear two renditions of the haunting 16th century piece, "The Coventry Carol." Not merely a Christmas carol, the song was written as
a lullaby sung by the mothers of doomed children, referring to the Biblical "Massacre of the Innocents," in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed. It's not a story that really lends itself to holiday cheer, which may illuminate the reasons Javier Navarrete chose it for the soundtrack to Neil Jordan's lush vampire tale, "Byzantium," from which you'll hear the first version, which will then blend into The Machine in the Garden's choral-goth take on the piece.

Lycia leads the first full set with part one of my triptych for the changing season, "Autumn Moon," taken from their latest, A Line That Connects. The second panel uses the classic "December" by The Last Dance as a bridge to Winter Severity Index's "At Least the Snow,"completing the piece.

The set continues with some great new upbeat post-punk from Nashville's own
Krovi, the latest musical outlet for Mother/Father's James Robert Farmer. Chile's Diavol Strâin follows with some brooding new goth rock, and the set is tied up with new music from recently resurrected '80s UK Deathrock act, 1919, taken from a live session that offers a taste of things to come.

The second set offers two brand new seven-inches from down under: Australia's
Nervous Trend return with a driving new title track, Shattered, and Infinite Void drop in later to give you their side of their new split with Moth. In the meantime, Swizerland's Yabanci make a late entry to the show with a song from their 2014 album Grimorium, and Poland's Undertheskin give you another taste of their self-titled 2015 album. The set concludes with a late 'Coffin debut from Finland's Kuudes Silma, a further taste of The Hearse's new self-titled album, and some new trad-goth from Angels of Liberty's Telepathine

Sweden's Agent Side Grinder lead the third set, with a catchy neo-new-wave track from their latest album, Alkimia. We then pick up an overlooked 2014 compilation track from Dream Affair, followed by a song from the latest Minuit Machine album, Violet Rains, which continues the band's journey into murky-yet-danceable darkwave for the pensive. Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat then offers another selection from their new To Live Vicariously album, and Deth Crux rounds back towards heavier deathrock on the way out, with another track from their new Pears of Anguish EP.

The heavier side of the show kicks in with an uncharacteristically abrasive, early-Swans-channeling track from the new Seeming EP, Worldburners Unite, which leads nicely into a deeper cut from the new Killing Joke album, Pylon. We then take another dose of Pinkish Black's new and difficult-to-label Bottom of the Morning album, before landing in eccentrically dark metal territory with a cut from Portugal's Onirik, taken from their new Casket Dream Veneration. Another brand new entry rounds out the set, a double shot from Greece's Varathron, taken from their new EP, The Confessional of the Black Penitents.

All of that, PLUS: New dark ambient from former Coil member Drew McDowell's Collapse album; An alarming number of selections from 1984's vaults of Deathrock and Holiday Horror; and Christmas closure from Spinal Tap and Skeletor

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This episode opens with two pensive neo-classical selections, probably influenced by the atmosphere of the current season. The first is new from Portland's uniquely styled and named Disemballerina, whose latest album Poison Gown has just seen digital release (here). Second, flowing sonically, if not thematically, from the first, is a classic and seldom-heard track from The Legendary Pink Dots, a band that simply has been on my mind a lot as of late.

The first full set begins with a deeper selection from the new Soft Kill album, Heresy. The band has just announced a whole slew of dates for next year, including some great opening slots for bands like Clan of Xymox and Modern English. Also hitting the road in a big way next year will be
The Cure (!!!), who close this set filled with overlooked and underrated selections from the vault, as well as more somber autumnal selections.

The second main set is filled with new bands and releases, beginning with
The Hearse, a straightforward gothic rock act out of the UK, which is something we certainly need right now. Coming up quickly behind that is new music from L.A.'s Sextile, from their new album A Thousand Hands, followed by a short-but-interesting new track from Australia's Masses, taken from their brand new split with Death Church.

The next set begins with new music from Belgium's eyebrow-raising Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat, who add a bit more electro to their recent explorations in darkwave on their new To Live Vicariously album. After dipping a bit further into the new
Cold Showers album, Matter of Choice, we drop by Paris for a double shot from Hélène de Thoury, member of both Hante. and Minuit Machine, two impressive new darkwave/synth bands that I can't seem to stop listening to lately. Look for new material from Minuit Machine on the December episode, in fact.

Finally, the set draws to a close with something new from Seattle's Grave Babies, taken from their new Holographic Violence album, the edge on which leads gracefully into the next set, which begins with some almost doom-laden new post-punk from L.A.'s Deth Crux. A band who needs no introduction then grabs the set by the throat: Killing Joke, with a taste of the closing track from their new Pylon album, which has already started receiving rave reviews. Killing Joke will also hit the road in 2016, with tickets already on sale now

The metal begins in earnest with Cardinal Wyrm's new digital single, a cover of the Bathory classic "Enter the Eternal Fire." Get it herePinkish Black then steps in with a song from their new (and also acclaimed) album, Bottom of the Morning. After an absolute master-classic from My Dying Bride, the show concludes with the accidentally-amazing Chipmunkson16speed, a project that involves capturing old Chipmunks records, played at very slow speeds, with often haunting results. In this case, an ethereally-damned take on the Belinda Carlisle classic "Heaven is a Place on Earth," which sounds -- in this incarnation -- like the soundtrack to somebody slowly bleeding to death in the Black Lodge. Yes.

All of that, PLUS: An unrealized soundtrack selection by Von Hertzog, taken from the new Retro Promenade tribute/compilation, Argento; Revisited soundtracks old and new; Selections from the deathrock, goth, and post-punk vaults; and more!

PODCAST: Halloween Special 2015!

[STREAM this episode right now on Mixcloud]
(or use the embedded player at the bottom of this post)

Here it is: The 2015 "Out ov the Coffin" Halloween Special! Get ready, because I'm about to dump over 3 hours of Halloween-worshiping sounds into your treat bags, including full songs, movie trailers, dialogue samples, sound effects, backwards messages, and questionable choices in subject matter! Follow along with the fully-detailed playlist below, so you don't get lost, or just go along for the ride -- although, to be fair, there may be no survivors...

This year marks several great anniversaries in horror history-- including the 40th anniversary of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," which receives a position of honor in the first set of this episode. Hitting the 30th anniversary mark this year are such classics as "The Return of the Living Dead," "Demons," and "Ghoulies," all of which receive nods on this episode as well, amidst a stream of current and classic graveyard hymns.

So, strap in (or strap somebody else in? See what happens?) and get ready for a gothic, deathrock, post-punk, darkwave, horror punk, and cryptic-metal salute to the greatest season of all, featuring many soundtrack selections, spooky noises, cinematic atmosphere, and a few odd shovel-fulls of necro-stalgia as well.

Pass it along!

*Correction: When talking about the current Ego Likeness tour, I said the wrong date for their Nashville show. The correct date is Thursday, November 5th @ The East Room. What can I say? Too much candy, I guess.

PODCAST: September 2015 Episode

[STREAM this episode right now on Mixcloud]
(or use the embedded player at the bottom of this post)

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

In honor of their current US tour, we begin this episode with a classic from The Chameleons, taken from their essential 1983 debut, Script of the Bridge. Now, before anybody scoffs, yes, it's really ChameleonsVox that's touring, and not all of the original members, but just let us have this. It's as close as we're ever going to get to seeing them play, and they're performing such a classic album in its entirety, to boot. Tour dates are here

Beyond that, this episode is loaded with brand new music, this time leaning heavily towards the punk side of the post-punk spectrum. First up is the long-awaited new album from Hollywood-to-Berlin transplants, Frank the Baptist. As the Camp Burns sees the band continuing to cultivate their trademark sound, which continues to defy easy categorization. After a dip in the coldwave vaults, we meet up with Publicist UK, a band that defies logic by not only being from the US, but also being comprised largely of known metal players in a post-punk game. Their new album, Forgive Yourself, is available here.

Our second Berlin-based act of the show,
Diät, then picks up with a selection from their somewhat garage-y new album, Positive Energy, followed by an uptempo post-punk blast from Ssleeping DesiresS, taken from their new self-titled release. The set then runs out with more new post-punk from Ohio's Pleasure Leftists, who have just issued The Woods of Heaven.

The first half of the next set takes on more of a straightforward punk sound -- with darker attitude, of course. Sheffield's Sievehead leads the charge with a cut from their Into the Blue album, followed by our third Berlin band of the show, Pretty Hurts, with a taste of their new Expectations EP. Australia's Chain of Flowers (who I must assume are Cure fans) then offer a taste of their forthcoming self-titled album, followed by a cut from the Eternal Return 7-inch from Brooklyn's Pawns, recently issued on the Sacred Bones label.

A bit of darkwave rounds out the set, with further dose of France's
Minuit Machine, who I can't seem to stop listening to lately, followed by the lead single from the most recent full length from Cincinnati's Skeleton Hands, who just played a great show at Fascination Street, Nashville's monthly post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, and trad-goth dance night that I mention often, because you should join us if you're ever in the neighborhood.

Cold Showers begins the next set, with a track from their new Matter of Choice album, joining darkwave and post-punk, using the pop sensibilities of The Cure as the glue. Another Lips comes back -- all the way from Misnk, Belarus -- with a new single entitled "Синька" (in English: "Blue"), just before we dip into a classic, and then emerge again with a further taste of Chelsea Wolfe's new album, Abyss. I had the pleasure of seeing her again this week, when her current tour dropped through Nashville. The set then ends with a couple of interesting twists, the first being from the also-touring Membranes, who have returned with Dark Matter/Dark Energy.

Although things get heavy a little earlier on this episode, the main metal begins by spotlighting the 2015 California Deathfest (October 9-11 in Oakland, CA). In this case, I've focused on the bands playing on that Sunday, which leans more in the direction of death/doom. You'll hear music from LycusGnaw Their TonguesBölzerWorship, and even a brand new one from Portland's Shroud of the Heretic, who will all join Loss (and many other great bands) on stage for the final day of the festival. Worship, Lycus, and Shroud of the Heretic will also be on tour leading up to the fest. Those dates are here

Finally, the show closes with a track from Velnias, who are also on tour in the US, stopping in to Nashville on September 23rd @ The East Room

All of that, PLUS: An always-welcome rarity from Robert Smith's personal vaults; a second nod to the memory of Wes Craven; some new instrumental work from Denmark's Moth; a look back at some forgotten Twin Peaks-inspired depressive metal; and more!
