EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

Last month's episode was, of corpse, focused specifically on the celebration of Halloween, which means that a great many new releases started to stack up over the past two months, and, as a result, this episode (and next month's) will be filled to the rim with fresh faces. We begin with new music from London's The Agnes Circle, whose new album Some Vague Desire offers a lush mixture of goth and post-punk style.

The first full set kicks off with a song from the much-anticipated new Soft Kill album, Choke. Having heard some of the new material on tour over the summer, it's been a long, but worthwhile wait. You can pick it up here, and catch them on tour in December with All Your Sisters. After that, we go for a deep, rich cut from
ROME's latest, The Hyperion Machine, before diving into traditional goth territory with new music from Portugal's NU:N, whose Naked Until Noema will delight fans of bands like Fields of the Nephilim or Love Like Blood. Germany's Golden Apes follow suit with a taste of their latest, M Ʌ L V S.

We do some catching up next, dipping back into the forgotten '80s vaults, with a track from the new Killed By Deathrock Vol. 2 compilation. This selection spotlights a catchy post-punk/wave track from UK act Flowers For Agatha, originally released in 1985. We then jump 30 years to 2015, picking up on a track from Minnesota's trad-goth act, The Rope, who initially came to my attention via the great compilation series, 33 Goth Bands You Should Know. Check those out!

The next set turns into darkwave/electronic territory, beginning with a spotlight on the current mini-tour from Bella Morte frontman Andy Deane's new synthwave project, The Rain Within. They'll play Nashville on December 4th, along with the other two bands you'll hear in the first half of the second set: The unique electro-goth approach of Nashville's own HR_Lexy, taken from their new Slave to the Light EP, followed by a new digital single from fellow Nashville act, FIRES (featuring members of Cryogen Second and Becoming the Devourer).

The set then turns to new music from a very catchy new Chicago band, Wingtips, whose Greayarea EP will no doubt be stuck in several people's car stereo's soon. Sinking into murkier waters, we then get a taste of the new Chasms album, On the Legs of Love Purified, which effectively combines shoegaze and industrial elements. Finally, we see the set close with a sadly-overlooked track from one of several Virginia acts featured this month, Decades/Failures.

Speaking of Virginia, the third set takes off with a brand new one from
True Body's Demo '16, before giving you a second taste of the new Belgrado album, Obraz. We then take a detour to the '80s vaults again for rarities from Screams for Tina and The Lucy Show, before jumping, with both feet, into another new track from The Bellicose Minds' new LP, The Creature. Finally, we go full-on Mexican Deathrock with a brand new track from CRVEL, taken from their new Sombras album.

While we're feeling a little heavier, you might just be convinced to try some dark metal, so the next set begins with a brand new one from Cast Away Souls, the latest album from Oakland's Cardinal Wyrm. Following with a curve ball, we're yanked back to 1995 for a bit of a classic from Sentenced, before getting some more California dark metal, this time from the one-man-band Mare Cognitum, whose new album, Luminiferous Aether, delves into the further realms of atmospheric black metal. The set concludes with the other new track that Ukraine's Drudkh contributed to their new split (with Grift), which you'll find under the title Betrayed By The Sun/Hägringar.

All of that, PLUS: New music on the way out from Norway's Wardruna; Fresh theatrical soundscapes from "Stranger Things" composers Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein, both with and without their band S U R V I V E ; An 8-bit horror tribute from Comptroller; More music from The Venture Bros., courtesy of J.G. Thirlwell; A dip in the dark ambient vault; and more!

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

In honor of their current US tour, we begin this episode with a classic from The Chameleons, taken from their essential 1983 debut, Script of the Bridge. Now, before anybody scoffs, yes, it's really ChameleonsVox that's touring, and not all of the original members, but just let us have this. It's as close as we're ever going to get to seeing them play, and they're performing such a classic album in its entirety, to boot. Tour dates are here.

Beyond that, this episode is loaded with brand new music, this time leaning heavily towards the punk side of the post-punk spectrum. First up is the long-awaited new album from Hollywood-to-Berlin transplants, Frank the Baptist. As the Camp Burns sees the band continuing to cultivate their trademark sound, which continues to defy easy categorization. After a dip in the coldwave vaults, we meet up with Publicist UK, a band that defies logic by not only being from the US, but also being comprised largely of known metal players in a post-punk game. Their new album, Forgive Yourself, is available here.

Our second Berlin-based act of the show,
Diät, then picks up with a selection from their somewhat garage-y new album, Positive Energy, followed by an uptempo post-punk blast from Ssleeping DesiresS, taken from their new self-titled release. The set then runs out with more new post-punk from Ohio's Pleasure Leftists, who have just issued The Woods of Heaven.

The first half of the next set takes on more of a straightforward punk sound -- with darker attitude, of course. Sheffield's Sievehead leads the charge with a cut from their Into the Blue album, followed by our third Berlin band of the show, Pretty Hurts, with a taste of their new Expectations EP. Australia's Chain of Flowers (who I must assume are Cure fans) then offer a taste of their forthcoming self-titled album, followed by a cut from the Eternal Return 7-inch from Brooklyn's Pawns, recently issued on the Sacred Bones label.

A bit of darkwave rounds out the set, with further dose of France's
Minuit Machine, who I can't seem to stop listening to lately, followed by the lead single from the most recent full length from Cincinnati's Skeleton Hands, who just played a great show at Fascination Street, Nashville's monthly post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, and trad-goth dance night that I mention often, because you should join us if you're ever in the neighborhood.

Cold Showers begins the next set, with a track from their new Matter of Choice album, joining darkwave and post-punk, using the pop sensibilities of The Cure as the glue. Another Lips comes back -- all the way from Misnk, Belarus -- with a new single entitled "Синька" (in English: "Blue"), just before we dip into a classic, and then emerge again with a further taste of Chelsea Wolfe's new album, Abyss. I had the pleasure of seeing her again this week, when her current tour dropped through Nashville. The set then ends with a couple of interesting twists, the first being from the also-touring Membranes, who have returned with Dark Matter/Dark Energy.

Although things get heavy a little earlier on this episode, the main metal begins by spotlighting the 2015 California Deathfest (October 9-11 in Oakland, CA). In this case, I've focused on the bands playing on that Sunday, which leans more in the direction of death/doom. You'll hear music from Lycus, Gnaw Their Tongues, Bölzer, Worship, and even a brand new one from Portland's Shroud of the Heretic, who will all join Loss (and many other great bands) on stage for the final day of the festival. Worship, Lycus, and Shroud of the Heretic will also be on tour leading up to the fest. Those dates are here.

Finally, the show closes with a track from Velnias, who are also on tour in the US, stopping in to Nashville on September 23rd @ The East Room.

All of that, PLUS: An always-welcome rarity from Robert Smith's personal vaults; a second nod to the memory of Wes Craven; some new instrumental work from Denmark's Moth; a look back at some forgotten Twin Peaks-inspired depressive metal; and more!

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This episode begins on a sad, but respectful, note. Earlier this week, Nick Cave's 15-year-old son Arthur was killed in a fall from a cliff. "The Weeping Song" seemed perhaps a little too fitting, but it was the only way I could send my sympathies, so I chose to do so.

Once past that bit of bad news, the first full set begins with our first taste of the forthcoming Lycia album, A Line That Connects (courtesy of a stream from Decibel Magazine's website). The song gets better with each listen, and definitely harkens back to the classic sound that put the band on the map. You will soon be able to pre-order the album on the Handmade Birds site.

After a personal classic from the criminally underrated
Black Ice, the set travels the globe to bring you fresh music, starting with a new German band called Transylvania. Not much is known about the band, but their sound offers a nice, ethereal, goth/deathrock vibe. The UK's Red Sun Revival follows with a track from their new faithfully-goth-rock album, Identities, followed by the first band to grace the show from Belarus, the curiously-named Another Lips, with an alternatingly catchy-then-suffocating post-punk piece from their new EP Грязь.

The first set closes with a moment of celebration for this week's 30th anniversary of the release of the classic Phantasmagoria album from
The Damned. The album marked the band's most outwardly gothic sound, and is often remembered for its iconic album cover, which coincidentally features model Susie Bick, who would later marry Nick Cave. Small world.

The second set begins with a pair of songs played in tribute to Simon Manning, founding member of the bands
Children on Stun and Grooving In Green, who passed away last week. I never knew the man, but he wrote some infectious goth rock that hit me in my formative years, and I salute him for that. The set continues with a pair of classics from the vault, before heading into some recent goth/punk fusion from Iceland's Börn, who give us a taste of their 2014 self-titled album. The set wraps up with new music from Seattle's Arcane, whose demo offers a unique take on anarcho/peace-punk.

The darkwave section of this episode is rife with new releases and bands, beginning with a taste of the new Lebanon Hanover album, Besides the Abyss, which leads into a track from fellow Germans Keluar, taken from their new EP, Panguna.  Meanwhile, back in the States, we finally get caught up in last year's Floods EP from Brooklyn's Aeon Rings (formerly heard on this show as Night Vision), before getting a taste of the much-talked-about new Los Angeles band, Drab Majesty. The first video from their Careless album can be seen here, paired with an interview about the project's visual component.

The darkwave crashes with the powerful and emotionally challenging title track from the new Ego Likeness album, When the Wolves Return. A pensive, slowly-building song may seem an odd choice for a lead single, but it shows what sets this band apart from their peers; a weakness that gave them strength. Watch the equally stark video for the song here.

The Dark metal portion of the show begins gradually, teasing in with two acts that flirt, to varying degrees, with the heavier side of the dark music spectrum. First up is a song from the new Nostalgist album, Of Loves and Days Ago. The Seattle band's sound is not easily pegged, evoking post-punk notes of bands like Lowlife, mixing in '90s alternative rock like The Smashing Pumpkins or Hum, getting noisy with some shoegaze, and rounding it out with post-metallic influences like Agalloch. Overall, it's an interesting mix. Check it out here.

Next up is a Philadelphia band called Cape of Bats, whose Ash Black Autumn EP mixes punk, deathrock, and black metal influences, with interesting results. We then take a dip in the late-'90s golden era of dark metal, from which you'll hear a couple of classics, along with some new music from Barshasketh -- who are not actually from the '90s, but my ears and memory were willingly fooled by the sound of their new album, Ophidian Henosis. Drudkh closes the set with a deeper cut from their latest album, A Furrow Cut Short.

Finland's elder statesmen of funeral doom, Skepticism, then step in to close the show with a track from their brand new album, Ordeal. Interestingly, the band chose to record this album completely live, before an audience, in one shot -- and the results pay off, with a sound that seems as large as they were when I had the distinct pleasure of seeing them with my own eyes.

All of that, PLUS: A deeper cut from Retro Promenade's "Carpenter" tribute, this time from the band Hide & Sequence; New Dark Ambient music from Italy's Enmarta and France's L'Enfant De La Forêt; Selections from the '70s Horror, post-punk, darkwave, and goth vaults; and more.

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This episode begins with music from The Last Dance, a deeper cut from their new Ruins album, which leads softly into score music from the soundtrack to "Ex Machina," a film that has been sadly overshadowed at the box office, but one that will no doubt surface on many end of the year lists. The score music was a collaboration between composer
Ben Salisbury and Portishead's Geoff Barrow.

The first full set begins with music from Virginia's
Shadow Age, whose new EP Silaluk lives up to all of the modern post-punk/goth promise heard in their demo material. The band hits the road today on a week of dates through the eastern, southern, and mid-United States. See those dates here.

After spending some time in the late '80s and digging into the last decade's vault, The next set begins with brand new music from Denmark's
Metro Cult. Their new 7-inch, Transparent, continues to build the band's reputation for infectious, energized post-punk, to which they have added a visual side with the just-released video for the title track. See it here.

Turkey is not a country from which we often see new dark music, but this episode has given us a solid pair of bands to appreciate. First up is Istanbul's
Ugly Shadows, whose sound falls more in modern deathrock/gothpunk territory. Grab their self-titled EP here. After that, you'll get a taste of She Past Away's just-released second album, Narin Yalnizlik, which sees the band continuing to churn out memorable modern post-punk/darkwave. And, no, as big of a punster as I am, I did not intend to make one by following these two Turkish acts with a deeper cut from Ritual Howls' latest album, Turkish Leather -- but it happened anyway, so enjoy it.

After a second taste of the latest
Calabrese album, Lust for Sacrilege, we dive fully into darkwave territory with the opening track from the forthcoming Ego Likeness album, When the Wolves Return. If you can catch one of the remaining dates on the band's current tour with Aurelio Voltaire, you can pick up the CD directly, Otherwise, pre-order it here.

The wave continues with another taste of
The Soft Moon's new Deeper album, followed by a former obscurity from Ministry's vaults, recently unearthed on their new Trax! Box. After a bit of latter-day Depeche Mode, the set takes a turn for the cinematic with a selection from the M83/Joseph Trapanese score to the dystopian semi-space opera "Oblivion," before closing with brand new music from The Synthetic Dream Foundation, taken from their new EP, The Witch King, 1st Movement.

The dark metal portion of the show begins with a song from A Furrow Cut Short, the new album from Ukrainian folk/black metal band Drudkh, which leads into a classic from Amorphis' Tales from the Thousand Lakes album, which the band will be performing in its entirety this weekend at the Maryland Death Fest, where Ireland's Primordial will also no doubt put on an excellent show. Alas, I'll have to settle for playing something from their latest album in this set.

The dark metal rounds out with a selection from the doom vaults, in the form of
The Gault's "Bright White Blind" -- but not before we are decimated by a track from the new Bell Witch album, Four Phantoms. It never ceases to amaze me how much sound and fury can be carried by just two men agonizing over only bass and drums, but they've done it again. Get it here.

All of that, PLUS: Brand new music from Tom Holkenborg's soundtrack to "Mad Max: Fury Road;" Another selection from Disasterpeace's score to "It Follows;" And a closing tribute to Joy Division's Ian Curtis who took his own life 35 years ago this week. May he rest in peace.

PODCAST: January 2015 Episode: The Best ov 2014

[STREAM this episode right now on Mixcloud]
(or use the embedded player at the bottom of this post)

In keeping with tradition, this first episode of 2015 takes a long look back at the Best of 2014, taking the form of a sonic time-capsule, in which the musical (and to a lesser extent, the cinematic) highlights of last year will be placed for later reflection.

Like always, the songs selected for this episode have been arranged according to flow and style, rather than any ranking system or order -- and since certain 2013 releases crept in late, I've added a bonus set in the middle to feature those, so as to prevent any great late-comers from falling through the proverbial cracks.

Speaking of late-comers, a few releases are being featured for the first time on this episode, including new San Francisco darkwave act, All Your Sisters, the soundtracks from "Only Lovers Left Alive" and "Under the Skin," and the latest albums from Primordial and Agalloch.

Also: My apologies to Principe Valiente, who made it into the first full set of this episode, but was not identified in the talk break afterwards. They also appear in this year's album cover collage (above), which I should note is not necessarily my top 16 picks, but a good visual representation of some of the standouts that also happened to have nice artwork to include.
