EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: 

This episode of "Out ov the Coffin" begins with my yearly tribute to Rozz Williams, who took his own life in April of 1998. This time, I attempted to avoid the staples of his catalog, choosing lesser-played songs and digging a bit deeper for a couple of alternate, later recordings that demonstrate why he remained a legend. He may be remembered best for the walls he broke down in his youth, but he was a versatile and uninhibited performer until the end.

Beyond the Rozz-centric opening set, this episode then offers brand new music from Norway's Long Night, a traditional gothic rock act that features former members of bands like Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy. A song from ROME's brand new, and quite-varied, Coriolan EP follows, offering a taste of Jerome Reuter's signature style once again. 

The set continues with a classic from The Cure, appearing here to mark two occasions: The 35th of anniversary of the release of the Faith album being this month, AND today (April 21st) being Robert Smith's birthday. Friends of the band, And Also the Trees, step in next, with a taste of their sublime new release, Born Into the Waves, which leads into the celebration of another anniversary, this one for Siouxsie & the Banshees Tinderbox, which turns 30 this month. After a graveyard classic from the vastly underrated Frank the Baptist, the set fills out with recent Central and South American goth, first from Colombia's La Procesión De Lo Infinito, then from Costa Rica's Draconian Incubus.

The next set begins with brand new music from New York's Bootblacks, who have emerged with a catchy mix of synth-heavy goth-pop and post-punk on their latest album, Veins. Next, we hit a "Then & Now" segment, featuring an Ultravox cover from Italy's now-defunct Chants of Maldoror, followed by the band that rose from its ashes, Sorry, Heels. As we slide into darkwave territory, Sweden's Sanne de Neige makes their cold and detached debut on the show, followed by a deeper cut from Turkish darkwavers, She Past Away. 

In retroactive celebration of a cool show that danced through Nashville last week, you'll get a taste of the most recent works from Arizona's Body of Light and California's High-Functioning Flesh, who collectively have both the moves and the motion, in the live setting. The set wraps up with a face-punch of a new song from Youth Code's latest album, Commitment to Complications, further demonstrating why the band has created such an industrial-strength buzz in recent years. 

The dark metal set starts with more new music from Oakland's Lycus, taken from their Chasms LP, before the set turns its attention to indulging my nostalgia for the metal of the mid-'90s. Classics from My Dying Bride, Celestial Season, and Samael lead us to the end of the set, finally shutting it down with an Alice Cooper cover. Alice's current tour will hit Nashville on May 2nd, so I close the show with a classic from his special corner of the vaults.

This episode of "Out ov the Coffin" begins by marking the 30th anniversary of the classic Depeche Mode album, Black Celebration -- without which, the world may have lacked for a particular strain of synthpop and darkwave bands for many years.

The first set begins with recent music from Canada's Cockatoo, the prior musical outlet of Hamsas XIII's Robyn Bright. After visiting 1982's vault for a resurrected minimal track from No More, the set dives deeper into Days on Shimmer and Drip, the latest EP from Philadelphia's Night Sins -- in this case, a lofi-darkwave cover of the classic "You Keep Me Hangin' On." The solemn chamber music of San Francisco's Amber Asylum follows, with a track from their new Sin Eater album, which leads faithfully into an overlooked gem from French neo-classical goth act, Rosa Crux, before ending the set with a cinematic classic from Crime & The City Solution, which you may recognize from the film "Wings of Desire."

Set two kicks off with a taste of the eagerly-anticipated, forthcoming album from one of California's original deathrock acts, Altar de Fey. The full-length, Echoes in the Corridor, is due out this Spring on Mass Media Records, but you can currently buy the advance single here. We then step back into 1982 for a classic from new wave/post-punk icons Modern English, who are hitting the road in the United States this spring (Nashville on May 28th). Sliding over to the Paris of 1982, we'll hear a live cult-classic from The Cure (also on tour this spring), before stepping into the next classic era, mid-'90s intentional gothic rock -- in this case, from The Merry Thoughts.

The second set continues with some impressively-murky new post-punk/goth rock from Russia's Сруб (or Srub, as they are known stateside), taken from their new album Песни Злых Цветов. We then pick up a recent track (that almost slipped through the cracks) from California deathrockers Christ vs Warhol, before rounding out the set with new music from fellow Californians They Feed at Night, who fly the deathrock/horror-rock flag high on Night Tower (a new split 7" release with Bell Tower Bats).

The third set begins kicks in hard with a driving new single from Italy's The Black Veils, indicative (one would hope) of more quality post-punk material on the way from them. We then step into the vaults for some underserved late-'80s darkwave from Cancer Barrack, before getting more electronic with further cuts from my current favorite French darkwave act, Minuit Machine, and the return of Canadian elektro/industrial stalwarts, Decoded Feedback. A short, Godflesh-esque new track (and video) from Seattle's Grave Babies comes next, followed by the absolute worship of Fields of the Nephilim that manifests in Sweet Ermengarde's new abum, Ex Oblivione. 

We begin the next set with a different kind of goth-metal act, Scotland's Lock Howl, who combine traditional gothic rock influences with death/black metal guitar work and vocal textures. The much-argued-about Deafheaven follows with a song from their latest album, New Bermuda, which sees the band expanding on what I've dubbed their signature "Sunny Day Emperor" sound. Portugal's Carma steps in behind them, with the more doom-laden feel of their new self-titled album, which leads into two selections from the vault: A recently unearthed early '90s EP from Greece's Necromancy (a project that led to the infamous Necromantia), and a lesser-played cut from the recently re-issued '90s black metal classic Tusen år har gått, from Sweden's Mörk Gryning.

All of that, PLUS: A small tribute to the music of Keith Emerson, who died earlier this month; More excellent atmospheric work from Brian Reitzell's newly-issued "Hannibal season 3" soundtrack; Selections from the dark ambient, soundtrack, and Hammer Horror Music vaults (which led me to name-drop and recommend the new Daughters of Darkness podcast); and more!

By now, there are few left in the world that are unaware of the passing of David Bowie. As an artist, he had only to try his hand at a given pursuit to leave an indelible mark on it, and our chosen sub-genres of glam, goth, and post-punk lovingly owe him a great debt. With that in mind, the first half-hour of this month's podcast serves as my tribute to the man's work and influence. Being the icon that he was/is, many great and exhaustive tributes have already been published, so I did not attempt to be comprehensive, but rather to weave some of my personal favorites in with selections from his final album, Blackstar, which was intentionally loaded with carefully-crafted messages and reflections on the way he chose to live and die. Rest in peace, Starman.

Beyond the opening Bowie tribute set, you will also hear one of my favorite covers of his music, as rendered by Midge Ure (of Ultravox), followed by one more nod to Major Tom, before launching into a regular "Out ov the Coffin" episode, filled with all the new music that has been building up so far this year -- as well as few things that were overlooked when putting the "Best ov 2015" episode together last month.

First to the plate is Lakes, with a deeper cut from their new Arms in Twilight album, which continues their quite-successful fusion of post-punk and neo-folk sounds. Italian post-punk band The Black Veils (no, not the 'Brides) make their debut with a selection from their late 2015 release, Blossoms. After a rare cult-classic Visage cover from Mors Syphilitica, the set welcomes Los Angeles goth band Night Nail, with their latest digital single, "Hollow Day."

The second set begins with an overlooked gem from Philadelphia's Death of Lovers, before diving into another classic from the vault. The suitable pairing of another new track from Killing Joke's new Pylon album and the title track from the newly-resurrected 1919's new Death Note EP comes next, followed by another dip in the cold(wave) regions of the vaults. Finally, another overlooked gem from Russia's Crystal Night rounds out the set. 

The next set begins with two (of the many) bands that will be hitting the road later this year. We begin with a selection from the new Savages album, Adore Life, and follow it with an early classic from Xymox -- now better known these days as Clan of Xymox, who will be playing four U.S. shows this fall (in Portland, Los Angeles, and Oakland). We then hit a couple of '80s obscurities before topping the set with new music from Angels of Liberty's Telepathine album, and the Days on Shimmer and Drip EP from Night Sins, both of which should have been featured on the "Best ov 2015" episode, but nothing's ever perfect, is it?

The dark metal portion of the show eases in with a dark ambient/neo-classical throwback, before jumping in to something from the new Lycus album, Chasms. If you recall hearing the band Cemetery Fog on the show a few months ago, they are back under the new name of Asphodelus, with a sound that leans more towards classic Peaceville, and a new EP entitled Dying Beauty & the Silent Sky. After a Swedish metal cvlt classic, New York's Luminous Vault (featuring members of Castevet) makes their debut on the show, with one of Graceless Recordings best tape releases of 2015, Communion. You can pick that tape up here, and while you're at it, they also did the cassette version of the new Lycus.

This episode's closing song comes from Norway's Ulver, taken from their brand new album ATGCLVLSSCAP, which was built from many improvisational pieces and live recordings done in the last couple of years.

As is the tradition, the first episode of the year is a long look back at the best of the previous year's worth of dark music, selected from the realms of goth, post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, industrial, ethereal, film scores, dark metal, and those regions too difficult to plot on a simple chart. That said, welcome to the "Out ov the Coffin Best ov 2015" Special.

Consider this a sonic time-capsule, if you will, or a themed mix-tape of the songs and albums that stood out, made the strongest impressions, or were attached to the defining moments of the year that was 2015. You will find that these entries are not ranked, but played in an order that flows for the listener. Each talk break highlights some of the best films and film-music of the year, too.

As always, there are a few releases on this episode that are appearing on the show for the first time, which underscores why I wait until January to look back, allowing time for things to breathe and sink in.

While not a proper Christmas special, the December episode of Out ov the Coffin begins with a few selections along those lines, and you'll find several other odd (and I mean odd) seasonal choices sprinkled in throughout. For the most part, this episode is all about new material, as we prepare for the "Best ov 2015" episode that will come out next month. 

As is the tradition, The Cruxshadows have given their fans a Christmas present in the form of a brand new holiday-related song -- so new, in fact, that it actually didn't make the original recording of this episode. Never fear, though, I tacked it on to the very beginning as a pre-show bonus track. Grab your own copy as a pay-what-you-feel donation from their website.

As the show formally begins, you will hear two renditions of the haunting 16th century piece, "The Coventry Carol." Not merely a Christmas carol, the song was written as a lullaby sung by the mothers of doomed children, referring to the Biblical "Massacre of the Innocents," in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed. It's not a story that really lends itself to holiday cheer, which may illuminate the reasons Javier Navarrete chose it for the soundtrack to Neil Jordan's lush vampire tale, "Byzantium," from which you'll hear the first version, which will then blend into The Machine in the Garden's choral-goth take on the piece. 

Lycia leads the first full set with part one of my triptych for the changing season, "Autumn Moon," taken from their latest, A Line That Connects. The second panel uses the classic "December" by The Last Dance as a bridge to Winter Severity Index's "At Least the Snow,"completing the piece.

The set continues with some great new upbeat post-punk from Nashville's own Krovi, the latest musical outlet for Mother/Father's James Robert Farmer. Chile's Diavol Strâin follows with some brooding new goth rock, and the set is tied up with new music from recently resurrected '80s UK Deathrock act, 1919, taken from a live session that offers a taste of things to come.

The second set offers two brand new seven-inches from down under: Australia's Nervous Trend return with a driving new title track, Shattered, and Infinite Void drop in later to give you their side of their new split with Moth. In the meantime, Swizerland's Yabanci make a late entry to the show with a song from their 2014 album Grimorium, and Poland's Undertheskin give you another taste of their self-titled 2015 album. The set concludes with a late 'Coffin debut from Finland's Kuudes Silma, a further taste of The Hearse's new self-titled album, and some new trad-goth from Angels of Liberty's Telepathine. 

Sweden's Agent Side Grinder lead the third set, with a catchy neo-new-wave track from their latest album, Alkimia. We then pick up an overlooked 2014 compilation track from Dream Affair, followed by a song from the latest Minuit Machine album, Violet Rains, which continues the band's journey into murky-yet-danceable darkwave for the pensive. Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat then offers another selection from their new To Live Vicariously album, and Deth Crux rounds back towards heavier deathrock on the way out, with another track from their new Pears of Anguish EP. 

The heavier side of the show kicks in with an uncharacteristically abrasive, early-Swans-channeling track from the new Seeming EP, Worldburners Unite, which leads nicely into a deeper cut from the new Killing Joke album, Pylon. We then take another dose of Pinkish Black's new and difficult-to-label Bottom of the Morning album, before landing in eccentrically dark metal territory with a cut from Portugal's Onirik, taken from their new Casket Dream Veneration. Another brand new entry rounds out the set, a double shot from Greece's Varathron, taken from their new EP, The Confessional of the Black Penitents.

All of that, PLUS: New dark ambient from former Coil member Drew McDowell's Collapse album; An alarming number of selections from 1984's vaults of Deathrock and Holiday Horror; and Christmas closure from Spinal Tap and Skeletor!
