Welcome to the May 2020 episode of "Out ov the Coffin." I mean it when I say that I hope this episode finds you well, considering all that has been going on and the struggles such things can bring. On that note, this show begins with a pair of songs in memory of Ian Curtis, as this month marks -- as hard as it is to fathom -- the 40th anniversary of his suicide on May 18th, 1980. His sudden and premature departure would leave the world wondering what would or could have been for generations to come. For as short as it actually was, Ian's musical career with Joy Division has since proven iconic for anyone with even the most casual interest in goth or post-punk.

Kicking off the first proper set is a pair of great new deathrock tracks, to get things moving in the right direction: First we have a song from the brand new Horror Vacui LP, Living for Nothing, and I am ever so glad to have them back at a time like this. A debut from Oakland's False Figure (feat. members of Cruz de Navajas) comes next, from their 2019 EP A Promised End, which I'm glad to have finally checked out, even if I am a bit late to that funeral party. Next up is a personal favorite from Ireland's sadly-defunct Solemn Novena, whose goth rock instant-classic Kiss the Girls album celebrates its 10th anniversary this month. Following a quick trip to the late '90s vaults with Fliehende Stürme, the set rounds out with two more new entries: Fresh Colombian deathrock from Tumbas, followed by the welcome return of The Faces of Sarah (and the impressive vocal pipes that come with them). The band's new Memorium album can be found here, along with a host of other new and old offerings you may have missed. 

Set two begins with something I'm quite proud to present here: A selection from Twin Tribes' new Live at Fascination Street album -- recorded at, you guessed it, Fascination Street Nashville (aka, the goth dance night that I run). Pick up the release (cassette, digital, or the matching shirt), and you'll hear the Texas darkwave duo's set from our December 2019 event, back when live shows were still possible. Remember that? Anyway... 

Set two continues with a new track from Brooklyn's A Cloud of Ravens, who released "Sacrosanct" as a free single for World Goth Day last week. UK post-punk act Ist Ist is up next, with the lead single from their new Architecture album, followed by a the classic "Eve White / Eve Black" from Siouxsie & the Banshees, in honor of Siouxsie 63rd birthday this week -- plus the 40th anniversary of its release as a b-side to "Christine" in May of 1980. Need another anniversary? Well, Bloody Dead and Sexy's An Eye On You turns 10 this week, so you'll get a banger from that album. Need some more birthdays? The next three tracks are in honor of the annual triple-birthday celebration for horror icons Peter Cushing (May 26th), Vincent Price and Christopher Lee (both May 27th). For Peter, we have Killing Miranda name-dropping him in their 1999 single Teenage Vampire, followed by more new music from The Kentucky Vampires, who've crafted a full ode to the irreplaceable "Saint Vincent." Finally, during the talk break, music from the Hammer Horror classic, "Taste the Blood of Dracula," which also happens to have been released 50 years ago this month! In spite of Lee's distaste for the film, it's a personal favorite from his year's in the Dracula cape.

Set three begins with a new song from Clan of Xymox, who not only have a single out for "Lovers," but the forthcoming full length, A Spider on the Wall is now up for pre-order as well. More lush new darkwave from Florida's Astari Nite is next, taken from their brand new album, Here Lies. We then take a moment to calm the waters with an older track from Iceland's favorite daughters, Kælan Mikla, before checking out new music from San Francisco's Topographies -- a relatively new post-punk band featuring The Cure-founder Lol Tolhurst's son Gray. Next up is another new bay-area band, Houses of Heaven, which sees members of Vaniish and Red Voice Choir entering more industrial territory, and finally, set three closes with another new single from the recently reactivated and relocated Seraphim Shock, who promise a full EP release in the coming months.

Set four kicks off with brand new music from one of the famed "Peaceville-three," Paradise Lost, whose new album Obsidian finds the band encapsulating their previous sounds into one streamlined entity. Easing into the heavier territory, I stop in to catch up with Finland's Hexvessel for a dark acoustic passage from their 2019 album All Tree, before diving head first into black metal with a slightly older selection from Denmark's Múspellzheimr. Brazil's The Kryptik are up next with a double shot from their 2019 LP When the Shadows Rise, which leads nicely into brand new music from Naglfar. The band's unmistakable Swedish black metal sound remains remarkably consistent at this point, making 2020's Cerecloth an easy one for long time fans to lock into.

Finally, after a quick (ok, more like "rambling") talk break, the show wraps up with the controversial new Behemoth single, a cover of The Cure's 1980 classic, "A Forest," rendered in the band's aggressively occult fashion, with the addition of the famously frayed guest vocals of Shining's Niklas Kvarforth. As I say in the break, I suggest taking in this cover via the accompanying video, because it played a significant role in my appreciation of their version, which many already despise. I will say here that although The Cure is my favorite band of all time, I do not consider them an impossible band to cover, nor do I consider their material sacrosanct, as some clearly do. That, and I thoroughly connect with both metal and goth, obviously. That said, judge as ye will...

Continuing on our long, strange journey through the apocalypse, welcome to the April 2020 episode of "Out ov the Coffin." It feels like we all hear enough about the current, worldwide pandemic nightmare on the news every day, so this show will focus mainly on the relief from trauma that great music can provide. The emphasis, as always, is on the latest releases, but we will stop along the way into these dark woods to turn the flashlight on some noteworthy classics, as well as some landmarks that are celebrating anniversaries this month. As you may have guessed, the 30th anniversary of "Twin Peaks" will figure largely in this episode as well.

Having recently shared it on social media as "a song of our time," I decided to begin this episode with Whispering Sons' harrowing "Hollow," taken from their Image album (which was my top pick for 2018). I do not wish to press the past words of an artist into the mold of current situations, but as I listened to this track (and watched its great video) over and over again last week, it felt like a stream of relevant, if abstract, reflections that gave breath to my own background thoughts on the current state of things. So here we are. (NOTE: For even more "Twin Peaks" vibes, check out the album's other outstanding single "Alone," the chorus of which directly quotes the Log Lady!)

The first full set begins with brand new deathrock from Athens, Georgia's own Tears for the Dying, taken from their new Memories EP. We then delve a track deeper into Fearing's new dark, shoe-gazey post-punk collection Shadow, before jumping all the way over to Sweden to check out the new release from Isolated Youth. Iris sees the band going further into their unique indie-blend of post-punk traditionalism, topped with a vocal approach more akin to the sorrowful moments of brit-pop artists or mid'90s emo -- which could play oddly against some listeners' ears. We then stop to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Christ vs. Warhol's Dissent album, which helped to solidify to return of original deathrock strains to the goth scene at the time. 

Continuing the first set, we visit Russia for some fresh post punk from Кафе Ван Гог (Kafe Van Gogh), taken from their 2019 release Зарублены Сады (Zarubleny Sady).Beyond that, we check in with current French post-punks Je T'aime for another dose of their high-energy self-titled album from last year, before flying the flag of New Model Army with a second taste of their latest album, From Here. Finally, set 1 closes with a 25th anniversary nod to Lycia's 1995 ethereal goth classic, The Burning Circle and Then Dust.

Set two acts as a three-way tribute, in which I've threaded a few of my favorite things together, in chronological order. We start the furthest into the past, with the 40th anniversary of The Cure's "Seventeen Seconds," the album that paved the way for the indelible mark the band would leave on goth. For this, I chose a couple of my favorites: The studio version of the album's somber title track, followed by a more raw and upbeat, period live recording of a personal favorite, the under-appreciated deep-cut "M." From there, we enter the town of Twin Peaks to mark the 30th anniversary of the show's initial release. In honor of that, I dug up some great television promos from April of 1990 and used them to set the tone for two of the show's most beloved musical themes: Angelo Badalamenti's unforgettable opening theme (the instrumental and Julee Cruise's vocal version spliced together) and the aching beauty of "Laura Palmer's Theme." Finally, speaking of aching beauty, we reach my annual remembrance of the art of Rozz Williams, beginning with a short solo-album piece, followed by the song that will haunt me forever, the delicate epitaph that is "Flowers," and closing with the title track from Christian Death's (some would say "final") studio album, Ashes. 


Set three turns the focus back on new releases, beginning with the first of two songs taken from the new benefit compilation Tiny Gods Who Walk Beside Us (from Sounds + Shadows), a remix of I Ya Toyah's "Code Blue." The compilation features many noteworthy artists from the current darkwave, industrial, and goth scenes, and proceeds will help to save the lives of cats in peril. From there, to remind myself of what month it is in these trying times, I pulled out ThouShaltNot's 2008 classic, and perhaps motivational at this point, synthpop anthem "April, We Can Break Through If We Try." Brand new music from Chicago's Panic Priest steps in next, as a teaser for their forthcoming Second Seduction album. We then get a second taste of fresh darkwave/post-punk from Anders Manga's new Andromeda, before marking the 10th anniversary of UK Goth rock act Pretentious, Moi?'s self-titled 2010 album, and all the trad-goth flag flying it proudly rode in on. Speaking of traditional gothic rock, Sweden's Funhouse are up next, with a new rehearsal track to hold our attention until their next release sees the light of day. Also doling out singles as a precursor to new releases, the now Atlanta-based Seraphim Shock returns next with a second digital single, the very classic-SS-sounding "Vaartuig." Finally, the set draws to a foggy close with another song from the latest Sonsombre album, One Thousand Graves. Honestly, it gets better every time I spin it. 


The fourth set begins with new music from Norway's Swansect (providing our second taste of the new Tiny Gods Who Walk Beside Us compilation). Despite their location, both on the map and in this episode, they are not a metal act, but the ominous soundscape and delivery of their post-punk and electronic blend felt right sliding into the dark metal portion of the show. Things then tip all the way into metal with brand new music from Colorado's Velnias, who have returned with another earthen black metal volume, Scion of Aether. Finland's Grieve arrive next, with a track from their self-titled new EP, followed by a deeper cut of quality French black metal from Sühnopfer. Finally, we close this chapter with some legendary Finnish doom: The opening song of Skepticism's 2008 classic, Alloy, which has just been reissued with a bonus track.

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

What a long, strange, and difficult month it has been. It is truly hard to believe how much has taken place, just since the last episode, but here we are, facing a stripped-down and vulnerable existence, brought on by a global pandemic. In Nashville, where this show is based, we had just been through a devastating tornado on March 3rd, leaving us even less prepared to deal with this new problem. There is so much that we can no longer do, for the time-being, but putting that aside, most of us are lucky to be alive, and at least we have music to enjoy, and podcasts to share that music. So, in that spirit, welcome to the March 2020 episode of "Out ov the Coffin."

Although the subject of the calamities above will find their way into the selections for this episode, I decided against trying to make a theme out of it all. Instead, I stuck mostly with the normal format of the show, save for one memorial set in the middle, to honor an all-too-lengthy list of people who have died since last we met. After the usual intro, the show starts with music from Black Ice, whose final album Before the First Light celebrates its 10th anniversary this month. I gave them a seat of honor this time, because they were never given the respect I thought they were due while active, having developed such unique, experimental, and deeply atmospheric forms of deathrock and art-goth. Gone as they may be now, you can find several members of the band in the current act, Esses, so do check them out.

The first full set begins with brand new music from the forthcoming album by California's Fearing, entitled Shadow. It's the band's first full length release, following a series of EPs, available April 10th, via Funeral Party Records. From there, I finally catch up with the latest from Portland's Shadowlands, taken from their equally ethereal post-punk collection, 003. Orthodox Goths Sonsombre then return with a brand new Nosferatu cover, taken from a free compilation called "Goth Covered," before we check in with Norway's Long Night for a taste of their new single, "Tick Tock."Next, making their 'Coffin debut is Greece's The Black Capes, offering a harder edged take on traditional goth rock on their forthcoming Lullabies for the Dead. Finally, the set finishes with even more great gothic rock from The Kentucky Vampires, who have just returned with the infectious new album, Crimson Curse. 

Set two begins with a touch of comic relief, kicking things off with what I've dubbed my "Official Quarantine Anthem" -- which is actually a re-purposed Halloween anthem by Nash-vile's own Boo Dude(s). The spook-ridden "RIPped in My Crypt" boasts a surprisingly catchy deathrock vibe, with bleeding-tongue-in-cheek lyrics about self-isolation, curses upon humanity, and unchecked alcoholism. ENJOY! Beyond that, we move to new music from France's Closed Mouth, finally catching with their 2019 release, One. A new darkwave/goth single from New York's A Cloud of Ravens comes next, followed by new music from Sweden's Memoria, landing perhaps on the more hard-pop side of darkwave with a taste of last year's Cravings. We then jump back exactly a decade to mark the 10th anniversary of Zola Jesus' now-classic Stridulum EP, before closing the set with a lesser-heard track from Depeche Mode's iconic Violator album, which celebrated 30 years of domination earlier this month. You also get a bonus DM b-side underneath the ensuing talk break...

Set three attempts to pay musical respects to the (far too) many people who have died since the last episode. I begin with an obscurity from a cult early '90s band, mostly known for alternative rock (back when that term still meant something), but who also wrote a powerful song that stood out and stayed with me ever since I first heard it on college radio: Anastasia Screamed's "Tornado," a song whose frenetic urgency and naked lyrical imagery capture, for me, the overwhelming surreality of disaster. It stayed in my head for days in the wake of the tornado that hit Nashville on March 3rd, so I send it out now to those who were affected. People here are still trying to recover, on top of viral concerns, so if you'd like to help, here's how you can.

The rest of the set three is dedicated to the work of audio/visual artists who have died in the last month, beginning with Doug Clark, guitarist/sometimes-vocalist and founder of cult deathrock/punk/goth legends Mighty Sphincter. Next up, a song from the "Re-Animator" soundtrack (1985), in memory of director Stuart Gordon, followed by a track from Psychic TV, in memory of Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. Finally, two tracks to close the set, in memory of a man whose resume was too long for just one song: Bill Rieflin, who played on hundreds of cool releases, but I chose to put the spotlight on his work with Ministry (in their prime) and SWANS (on my favorite album of theirs, The Great Annihilator, which also turned 25 this year). May his drum work pummel you on his way out.

Finally, the dark metal set begins by throwing things back to the turn of the century, and some of the metal that was molding my brain in the early 2000s. Israel's Sleepless begin the set with a track from their 1999 demo, showcasing their unique blend of prog, jazz, metal, and ethereal psych, which leads nicely into a track from Agalloch's peak 2006 folk-metal opus, Ashes Against the Grain. An epic-length composition from obscure symphinc black metal band Corvus Corax flies in next, followed by something brand new from Nashville's own dungeon synth/dark ambient vamp, Crypt of Carmilla. You can grab their Wintermoon Phantasmagoria here. Finally, we close the set with a further taste of the latest from Vaeok's new self-titled album, before ultimately closing the show with music from Lurker of Chalice's newly unearthed/reissued Tellurian Slaked Furnace.

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This February 2020 episode begins, fittingly enough, with a musical allusion to "Romeo and Juliet," courtesy of the new single from Florida's Astari Nite. The band has given us another catchy, lovelorn, romantigoth/darkwave song for the season, entitled "Capulet Loves Montague." Find it here.

From there we enter the fabled Collins Mausoleum (shown in its real-life form on this month's cover art, adapted from a photograph I took in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery a few years ago) to pay our respects to two Dark Shadows alumni that died in the opening months of this year. First, actor John Karlen (who died last month, and is also featured on this month's cover collage), best known for his portrayal of the Barnabas-releasing Willie Loomis in both the television series and the feature film, House of Dark Shadows. It is from that film that we draw the music for the first talk-break, chosen to honor composer Robert Cobert, who died this week. Cobert's original music for the series and films have haunted the memories of gothic horror fans for decades, and no doubt will for many more. It has certainly set the tone for dozens of episodes of "Out ov the Coffin," so a small tribute was the least I could do here.

The first full set begins with brand new music from fellow mausoleum-dwellers Sonsombre, whose new album One Thousand Graves is a triumphant continuation of the orthodox gothic rock sound that has put them on the map in the last couple of years. We then dive further into the latest from Los Angeles Death Rock band The Wraith, from their new Gloom Ballet album, before heading into the vaults for some mid-'80s deep cuts. First, we have some rare Japanese deathrock from Phaidia, followed by a lesser-known track from Pink Turns Blue, in honor of songer Mic Jogwer's birthday this week. Finally, we round out the set by going under the vaults for a nod to the 30th anniversary of Clive Barker's Nightbreed becoming a feature film. Since the label's name was a nod to the film, we nod back to '90s goth label Nightbreed Records with two classic cuts from Every New Dead Ghost and Suspiria, before rolling out some of Danny Elfman's score to the film underneath the next talk break.

Set two begins with more new music from La Scaltra, going a track deeper into The Third Eye (see the video for "The Spell" here). Anders Manga makes his return to the show, after what was probably too long, with a taste of his new album, Andromeda, this time sporting a more post-punk/darkwave sound. We then get a preview of the forthcoming Machine album from Sweden's Then Comes Silence, before dipping back to the vaults for a 1981 obscurity from 13th Chime. France once again stands up with the high-energy modern post-punk, this time from newcomers Je T'Aime, whose self-titled album bounced in last year. Not to be out-energized, Brooklyn's Bamabara slide in next with a track from their new Stray album that captures their renowned live energy. All of this leads us to one more birthday wish, this time for Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke. Not only did he turn 60 this week, but one of their most beloved releases, Night Time, turned 35 this month, so that adds up to the classic "Darkness Before Dawn" closing this set. 

Set three starts with a darkwave debut from Canada's Ringfinger, followed by a second trip to France for a third dose of Minuit Machine's new Infrarouge album. Also making their debut on this episode is Los Angeles electro/darkwave act Mareux, with a new synth-laden single you can find here. Already getting quite the buzz on social media, fellow L.A. act Riki comes in next with a song from her self-titled album that's sure to gather bodies on dance floors this year. Nuke York's Blu Anxxiety returns next, with a more minimal electro vibe this time, taken from their new split release with Anatomy. Finally, the unique post-punk/psych-soul/electro sound that is Atlanta's Algiers rounds out this set with something from their new album, There Is No Year. 

The fourth, and final, full set turns our attention to the barrage of new black metal that I've been wading through since late last year -- but I'm finally catching up. We begin with brand new USBM from Vaeok's self-titled, intense-yet-atmospheric release, followed by more quality French black metal from Sühnopfer's new Hic Regnant Borbonii Manes. We then head to Switzerland for new music from Ateiggär, whose Us d‘r Höll chunnt nume Zyt joins  Sühnopfer in hearkening back to classic '90s black metal approaches, like that of Abigor. We stop momentarily to mark last month's 50th anniversary of the classic H.P. Lovecraft film adaptation, The Dunwich Horror, scored by Les Baxter, before rounding out the set with something new from Sargeist's Death Veneration EP, which snuck out during the last few days of 2019.

All of that PLUS: New Dracula music from this year's BBC/Netflix adaptation; Cradle of Filth's Cruelty and the Beast finally gets the remixed we've always wanted; The 40th anniversary of John Carpenter's The Fog; and more!
