PODCAST: August 11th, 2011

Yesterday marked the fourth anniversary of the notorious attack on Sophie Lancaster, a young goth girl who was beaten mercilessly in a UK park, then later died as a result of the injuries sustained. Simply put, it was a hate crime, in its most basic (and base) form, spurred by the selfishness of her attackers, who gave themselves over to their own hostility. She was only 20. I opened this week's show with a small tribute to her memory, in the form of the Autumn Cannibals song, "Monument to Shame." I would say more about this, but the song says everything so well that I will let it stand alone. It is, after all, a monument.

Among the brand new material on this week's show, we heard our first taste of the newly-released final album from New Jersey's The Empire Hideous. According to one-time-Misfits-singer Myke Hideous, this will be the final chapter in the band's impressive history. The album, appropriately titled "The Time Has Come," was originally to be produced by Type O Negative's Peter Steele, but his untimely death just barely prevented that from happening.

Also new to the show this week was music from Canada's The Birthday Massacre, whose new EP "Imaginary Monsters" was released this week. Their Metropolis Records label-mates God Module also issued a new EP/single this week, entitled "Rituals," from which I actually selected a remix to play on this week's show. That's rare for me, as I'm usually not interested in remixes at all. So, consider that a positive review.

For the rest of the show, I attempted to get everyone as excited as I am for this year's Dragon*Con, threw in mentions of several upcoming tours (including Bella Morte, Swans, and Die Sektor), pulled out some obscure soundtrack selections, explored the far reaches of French-Canadian black metal, and ran from one side of the dark music spectrum to the other.

PODCAST: August 4th, 2011

This week's show was kicked off with another taste of the brand new Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows album, "Have You Seen This Ghost." Interestingly, the album is filled with cover songs, some of the choices for which will raise more than a few eyebrows -- Lionel Richie and Bonnie Tyler spring to mind -- but Anna Varney truly makes each song her own, lacing each with her trademark aching-period-piece style. From Sopor, we immediately moved into a new track from Hopeful Machines, which is a more experimental ambient/electronic project from Steven Archer of Ego Likeness. The new album is called "On the Mending of Pack," and you can find the ordering info for that one here.

We also heard from Nashville's own Cryogen Second, who have just released their first full-length album, "Anthem for the Great Self Destruct," on Beyond Therapy Records (the label started by Ben from The Ludovico Technique). You can grab that here. If you're a fan of the harder side of Industrial/ebm, Battlestar Galactica's extended social metaphors, and politically charged lyrics, you will like Cryogen Second. If you catch them live, count on the addition of guitars, bringing the presentation to yet another level.

Also new this week: Music from Germany's two-man post-punk (and sometimes metallic) band, Aeon Sable, whose new album "Per Aspera Ad Astra" can be found here. We dug a bit deeper into the latest from London's Ulterior, whose album "Wild in Wildlife" is really making me wish I'd made a greater to effort to get to Europe for some of the more gothcentric festivals this year. But, alas...

The rest of the show is filled with: obscure local music, recently unearthed early Slovenian industrial, space obsessed soundscapes, odd goth b-sides, new sounds from Henry Jackman's finally-released X-Men: First Class soundtrack, and much, much more.

PODCAST: July 28th, 2011

One of the phrases I've used to describe this show over the years is "exploring the unlit corners of a strange musical map," and since it had been a while since I last pushed the proverbial envelope to the edge of this coffin, I decided, while looking over some of the new entries, that this would be the week to do so.

With a new digital single from ThouShaltNot out this very week, I simply couldn't resist. And if this song's inclusion on Projekt Records' forthcoming "A Dark Cabaret 2" compilation was to be any indication, "The Haunted Phonograph" would be otherworldly, anachronistic, and equally suited for either a smoke-laden cabaret setting or a turn-of-the-last-century séance. And it is! Get it for yourself at their Bandcamp site.

Also treading into territory not usually covered by this show was a new collaboration between Neko Case and perennial favorite Nick Cave, which was recorded for use in the first episode of True Blood: Season 4. If that isn't enough to make you want to hear it, the song, "She's Not There," happens to be a cover of noted psychedelic '60s band The Zombies, who gave us the classic "Time of the Season" back in 1969.

Also making its debut this week was the new single from (former Rosetta Stone frontman) Porl King's current "post-gothic" band, Miserylab. The song, "Children of the Poor," is available here as a free mp3 download. If you visit the official Miserylab site, you can also check out the new video he made for the song.

You will also hear more new music in this episode from Sweden's Principe Valiente, whose self-titled new album is picking up steam among post-punk fans worldwide. Not to sell them short by comparing them to another band, but if you miss how Interpol sounded on their first album, you'll want to check these guys out.

The industrial portion of this week's show went largely oldschool, revisiting some classic club tracks from the late '90s/early 2K's. In the dark metal section at the end of the show, you'll hear new music from Italy's Abhor, whose forthcoming album Ab Luna Lucenti, Ab Noctua Protecti, will hit the streets on September 27th on the Moribund label.

PODCAST: July 21st, 2011

This week's show brought several notable and new dark entries. The new sounds began with Athens, Georgia-based post-punk/goth band Entertainment, who contributed a brand new track to the compilation "SOMA: A Disaro Mixed Tape." You can get your own free copy of this new compilation right here. Entertainment's track, "Distance," serves as a taste of things to come as the band continues to work on their second full-length album, which I must say I am really looking forward to hearing.

Also new to the show this week was music from Italy's In Loving Memory, taken from their recent "Phrenology" EP, which is also available as a free download (here). Yes, more free music. It's like Christmas in July over at the Out ov the Coffin blog today!

We also heard more new material from Swedish post-punk band, The Exploding Boy, delving deeper into their latest release, "The Black Album" (2011). We then caught up with a new entry from the Los Angeles band Bestial Mouths, who showcased a noisier, murkier side of deathrock/post-punk. With a name like that, I would expect nothing less.

There were also several slightly older tracks making their debut on the show this week, some of them from bands that had not been featured before. New to you, too? Perhaps. PODCAST: July 14th, 2011

This week's show brought new music from the Texas duo, The Machine in the Garden, whose new album "Before and After the Storm" has just been released. You can grab the limited edition physical CD or the digital download at their Bandcamp site now.

Also premiering this week was a new track from Germany's best-named deathrock band, Bloody Dead and Sexy, whose song "Liquid Grey" is a promising teaser for things to come.  Los Angeles-based post-punk/shoegaze/goth band Sleepmask also gave us a sample track by way of the same new volume of the "Darkness Before Dawn" compilation series, in the form of the song "Collusion."

I also delved a bit deeper into the new Ulterior album, "Wild in Wilderness," for a track that bears one of my favorite titles in a while, "Too In Love to Fuck." It really just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? And, with my new-found freedom of speech as a podcaster, I actually get to say it out loud.

This show starts out subdued, moves into some classic goth and post-punk sounds, then picks up the pace with some stylized gothic rock and deathrock. For the third act, I pulled out an interesting mash-up and a couple of interesting curve-balls before going industrial for a bit. The final segment of the show explores some classic examples of how 'dark' and 'heavy' can effectively mix, in very different ways, all glued together with static and noise.

Out ov the Coffin: PODCAST: July 7th, 2011

This week brought another long list of new (dark) entries, which is always a good thing. Early in the show, Sweden's Jeniferever kicked in with a cool mix of post-punk, post-rock and shoegaze, taken from their new album "Silesia." Also hailing from Sweden, we heard from Principe Valiente, who also mix dark indie, post-punk and shoegaze. I wonder if these guys know each other?

The curiously familiar sound of a new track from Snake Dance met my ears this week, evoking strong comparisons to the recently defunct Solemn Novena, although I've not been able to confirm any connection between the two bands... yet. Fans of the more traditional UK goth rock sound will be quite pleased, though -- as they will with the latest from the UK's  Ulterior. If comparisons to The Mission, The Cult, and The Sisters of Mercy make your ears perk-up, I encourage you to grab their new "Wild in Wildlife" CD right now. It's worth the effort.

Continuing in the new wave of post-punk bands, we also heard more new material from Sweden's The Exploding Boy. Either Sweden is churning out an unusual quantity of cool bands right now, or I'm biased due to my own (partial) Swedish heritage. Either way, The Exploding Boy's "The Black Album" is worth checking out, too. Not to be outdone, Germany's Fliehende Stürme gave us more new music from their new "Warten auf Raketen" disc.

In the electronic/industrial realm, Germany's Amnistia gave us a taste of their latest one, "Egotrap," and we went ever deeper into the new Necro Facility disc, "Wintermute." Want to guess where they're from? Yep... Sweden. Jeez!

Finally, in the dark metal portion of the show, we heard from 40 Watt Sun, which features 3 members of one of the most soul-baring & moving traditional doom bands, Warning. Their brand new album is called "The Inside Room."

Out ov the Coffin: PODCAST: June 30th, 2011

This week's show brought us new music from Zola Jesus, considered by many to be one of the greatest finds in dark independent music in the last couple of years. With a set of pipes like hers, I'd have to agree. The song "Vessel" was made available for download this week, as a teaser for her forthcoming album, "Conatus," which is set for release on October 4th. If you're curious about the album's title, as I was, you can find more on its meaning here.

Both Imperative Reaction and God Module also released new singles this week. Imperative Reaction gave us "Surface," whose release was coupled with a brand new video, directed by Chad Michael Ward. The forthcoming Imperative Reaction album (due 9/13/2011) will be self-titled. God Module's new single, "Ritual," is a taste of what's to come from their next album, "Séance," which will also be released on September 13th. The two bands are said to be mounting a tour for the fall, along with fellow Metropolis Records artist (and bandmate in both acts) System Syn.

We also went a bit deeper into the latest release from Haujobb this week, exploring the track "Letting the Demons Sleep (Nightmare)," from their new EP, "Dead Market."
