It's always good news when The Legendary Pink Dots come out with a new album, and this show begins with the first track from The Gethsemane Option, which has just been released on Metropolis Records. The band will hit the road this Fall in the US and beyond. You can see the tour dates here.

It's a busy time for the current post-punk and modern goth scene. This show features a short list of new entries from all corners of the globe and the genre. Germany leads the charge this time, first with a second dose of the new Bloody Dead and Sexy album, Bad Ambient, then with the premiere of fellow Germans salvation AMP. Their new album Hidden Faces can be investigated further here.

Meanwhile, in Belgium, KTAOABC (aka Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat) has been releasing free recordings of cover songs they've captured at recent shows. The first was a SWANS cover -- and the second? A Virgin Prunes classic that you'll hear on this show. Making an overdue premiere on this episode is Portland, Oregon's Dead Cult, whose cassette release Surviving in a Dying World came out last year, but finally makes its debut here and now.

Speaking of a busy season for the modern post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, and traditional goth scene, I spend a few minutes on this episode talking about my new club night, Fascination Street, which starts on Saturday, July 6th @ The East Room in Nashville, TN. My apologies to those far from the area, but I'm more than a little excited. For those who may wish to attend, here's the event page, with all the details.

Back to the new music, London's White Lies have emerged with one of the catchiest singles I've heard in a long while, acting as free teaser for their upcoming album, Big TV. Fellow Londoners AlterRed return with with their latest electro-cabaret cocktail, The Time It Takes to Smile, which closes a conceptual trilogy of albums. Learn more here.

Also in the electronic/industrial realm, you'll hear a bonus new b-side from Snog, followed by a look at early industrial and EBM, inspired by the release of ThouShaltNot vocalist/composer S. Alexander Reed's new book, "Assimilate: A Critical History of Industrial Music." Pick that up here, and check out this in-depth interview he did about it on NPR.

On the heavier end of the spectrum, the long-awaited new album from Austria's Summoning has been unleashed. The once-again Tolkien-obsessed subject matter and epic-scale fantasy black metal are in top shape on Old Mornings Dawn. Get it in several varieties here. And while you're thinking in epic terms, you'll also hear a taste of Hans Zimmer's sweeping score to the newly released "Man of Steel" film.

This episode begins with new music from Brooklyn, New York's Light Asylum, whose full length debut Light Asylum proves to be another great showcase for singer Shannon Funchess' ever-impressive, deep, powerful, dramatic -- and even operatic -- voice, which takes their '80s-steeped electro/darkwave music into many new dark and danceable arenas.

Speaking of singing to impress: Amidst news of vocalist Jaz Coleman's apparent and confusing disappearance this week, you'll hear music from Killing Joke's new album, MMXII. It's another solid release, loaded with their signature atmosphere, biting lyrical content, and, of course, Jaz's soaring -- and sometimes absolutely serrated -- voice.

Earlier this week, Germany's afmusic offered up a free, 63-track retrospective of the many genres of music they've been releasing up to this point, offering fans of goth, darkwave, post-punk, and many other styles a whole lot of sounds to check out. Three selections are featured on this episode (from Amada, The Foreign Resort, and M!R!M), but you can grab the whole collection right here.

Also featured on this episode: New mid-paced doom/dark metal from Italy's The Foreshadowing, who return this month with a new album entitled Second World; fresh experimentation from Chicago's Locrian, who also return with a new release this month, entitled The Clearing & Final Epoch; and even some newly released live material from Loss, recorded at March's Scion A/V showcase for Profound Lore Records. This week, much like I am right now, the show is all about Dragon*Con, which will be happening this coming weekend. For the uninitiated, Dragon*Con is a convention held every Labor Day Weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, attracting about 40,000 fans of things like: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Films, Comics, Animation, Gaming, Goth/Darkwave Music & Culture, and much, much more.

This will be the 25th Anniversary edition of Dragon*Con, so I've devoted this entire episode to all things Dragon*Con: The guests, the bands, the themes that will be featured at the Con this year. Think of this episode as a primer that might be listened to on the way down, or while you're getting ready.

If you have no interest in Dragon*Con, or are terribly sad not to be going this year, you might want to skip around this episode and listen to just the music. The talk breaks are filled with info about panels, and where to go at the Con to see various guests.

PODCAST: August 11th, 2011

Yesterday marked the fourth anniversary of the notorious attack on Sophie Lancaster, a young goth girl who was beaten mercilessly in a UK park, then later died as a result of the injuries sustained. Simply put, it was a hate crime, in its most basic (and base) form, spurred by the selfishness of her attackers, who gave themselves over to their own hostility. She was only 20. I opened this week's show with a small tribute to her memory, in the form of the Autumn Cannibals song, "Monument to Shame." I would say more about this, but the song says everything so well that I will let it stand alone. It is, after all, a monument.

Among the brand new material on this week's show, we heard our first taste of the newly-released final album from New Jersey's The Empire Hideous. According to one-time-Misfits-singer Myke Hideous, this will be the final chapter in the band's impressive history. The album, appropriately titled "The Time Has Come," was originally to be produced by Type O Negative's Peter Steele, but his untimely death just barely prevented that from happening.

Also new to the show this week was music from Canada's The Birthday Massacre, whose new EP "Imaginary Monsters" was released this week. Their Metropolis Records label-mates God Module also issued a new EP/single this week, entitled "Rituals," from which I actually selected a remix to play on this week's show. That's rare for me, as I'm usually not interested in remixes at all. So, consider that a positive review.

For the rest of the show, I attempted to get everyone as excited as I am for this year's Dragon*Con, threw in mentions of several upcoming tours (including Bella Morte, Swans, and Die Sektor), pulled out some obscure soundtrack selections, explored the far reaches of French-Canadian black metal, and ran from one side of the dark music spectrum to the other.

PODCAST: August 4th, 2011

This week's show was kicked off with another taste of the brand new Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows album, "Have You Seen This Ghost." Interestingly, the album is filled with cover songs, some of the choices for which will raise more than a few eyebrows -- Lionel Richie and Bonnie Tyler spring to mind -- but Anna Varney truly makes each song her own, lacing each with her trademark aching-period-piece style. From Sopor, we immediately moved into a new track from Hopeful Machines, which is a more experimental ambient/electronic project from Steven Archer of Ego Likeness. The new album is called "On the Mending of Pack," and you can find the ordering info for that one here.

We also heard from Nashville's own Cryogen Second, who have just released their first full-length album, "Anthem for the Great Self Destruct," on Beyond Therapy Records (the label started by Ben from The Ludovico Technique). You can grab that here. If you're a fan of the harder side of Industrial/ebm, Battlestar Galactica's extended social metaphors, and politically charged lyrics, you will like Cryogen Second. If you catch them live, count on the addition of guitars, bringing the presentation to yet another level.

Also new this week: Music from Germany's two-man post-punk (and sometimes metallic) band, Aeon Sable, whose new album "Per Aspera Ad Astra" can be found here. We dug a bit deeper into the latest from London's Ulterior, whose album "Wild in Wildlife" is really making me wish I'd made a greater to effort to get to Europe for some of the more gothcentric festivals this year. But, alas...

One of the phrases I've used to describe this show over the years is "exploring the unlit corners of a strange musical map," and since it had been a while since I last pushed the proverbial envelope to the edge of this coffin, I decided, while looking over some of the new entries, that this would be the week to do so.

With a new digital single from ThouShaltNot out this very week, I simply couldn't resist. And if this song's inclusion on Projekt Records' forthcoming "A Dark Cabaret 2" compilation was to be any indication, "The Haunted Phonograph" would be otherworldly, anachronistic, and equally suited for either a smoke-laden cabaret setting or a turn-of-the-last-century séance. And it is! Get it for yourself at their Bandcamp site.

Also treading into territory not usually covered by this show was a new collaboration between Neko Case and perennial favorite Nick Cave, which was recorded for use in the first episode of True Blood: Season 4. If that isn't enough to make you want to hear it, the song, "She's Not There," happens to be a cover of noted psychedelic '60s band The Zombies, who gave us the classic "Time of the Season" back in 1969.

Also making its debut this week was the new single from (former Rosetta Stone frontman) Porl King's current "post-gothic" band, Miserylab. The song, "Children of the Poor," is available here as a free mp3 download. If you visit the official Miserylab site, you can also check out the new video he made for the song.

You will also hear more new music in this episode from Sweden's Principe Valiente, whose self-titled new album is picking up steam among post-punk fans worldwide. Not to sell them short by comparing them to another band, but if you miss how Interpol sounded on their first album, you'll want to check these guys out.

The industrial portion of this week's show went largely oldschool, revisiting some classic club tracks from the late '90s/early 2K's. In the dark metal section at the end of the show, you'll hear new music from Italy's Abhor, whose forthcoming album Ab Luna Lucenti, Ab Noctua Protecti, will hit the streets on September 27th on the Moribund label.

PODCAST: July 21st, 2011

This week's show brought several notable and new dark entries. The new sounds began with Athens, Georgia-based post-punk/goth band Entertainment, who contributed a brand new track to the compilation "SOMA: A Disaro Mixed Tape." You can get your own free copy of this new compilation right here. Entertainment's track, "Distance," serves as a taste of things to come as the band continues to work on their second full-length album, which I must say I am really looking forward to hearing.

Also new to the show this week was music from Italy's In Loving Memory, taken from their recent "Phrenology" EP, which is also available as a free download (here). Yes, more free music. It's like Christmas in July over at the Out ov the Coffin blog today!

We also heard more new material from Swedish post-punk band, The Exploding Boy, delving deeper into their latest release, "The Black Album" (2011). We then caught up with a new entry from the Los Angeles band Bestial Mouths, who showcased a noisier, murkier side of deathrock/post-punk. With a name like that, I would expect nothing less.

There were also several slightly older tracks making their debut on the show this week, some of them from bands that had not been featured before. New to you, too? Perhaps. On the way out, I threw the spotlight on the current Dark Castle/Yob tour, which will make its way to Nashville this coming Tuesday (July 26th) at Little Hamilton, along with Loss and Yautja. Out ov the Coffin: PODCAST: June 23rd, 2011

Another pile of new music greeted this week's show, including a teaser track from the forthcoming Gary Numan album, "Dead Son Rising." This special edit was prepared to whet the appetites of Numan fans everywhere, and I would say that it worked quite well, with its abrupt ending that seems to promise more.

Several new entries appeared in the industrial portion of the show this time, including the new single from Haujobb, entitled "Dead Market," and brand new sounds from Spain's PAIL, from their latest CD, "Faith in the Void." We also went a little deeper into the much-talked-about new "Wintermute" album from Sweden's Necro Facility, who are receiving high praise not only from fans, but from their fellow musicians across the ebm/industrial scene.

We also dug a bit deeper into the latest albums from Bella Morte, whose newly-released album, "Before the Flood," has been topping the Metropolis Records sales charts since its release, and Clan of Xymox, who kicked off this week's show with another great track from their latest, "Darkest Hour."

I also went on a bit of a harpsichord trip this week, pulling out some atypical atmospheric interpretations of the instrument's sound from vastly different time-periods, none of which were the heyday of the harpsichord. I also gave you tastes of the latest from Blut Aus Nord and Dark Castle in the metal portion of the show, and paid a special tribute to Glenn Danzig, who celebrated his 56th birthday last night.
