Following a three-week tour of Europe with Loss that was filled with amazing concerts, unbelievable locations, significantly beautiful sights, and a great deal of sleep-deprivation, Out ov the Coffin returns in its new monthly format. What can I say? I'm simply not in one place long enough to record a show more often than that, at least for now.

This episode, colored explicitly by the influence of my travels across so many great countries, emerges at the tail-end of May, so it will serve as the June 2014 episode. I've followed a loose theme, gathering songs that relate to the shows we played, the bands we met, the landscapes we crossed, and the music that visited my head in those moments. I've also made this show extra-long and packed it with a great deal of brand new music.

This one begins with a birthday nod to Siouxsie Sioux, in the form of her collaboration with Morrissey, who just so happened to have celebrated his own birthday last week. The birthdays don't end there, and neither do the nods to dark music icons. Peter Murphy returns with the first single from his new Lion album on this episode.

The ever-prolific Legendary Pink Dots have issued several new items in the last few months, so we only begin to catch up with a selection from their limited vinyl release, The Curse of Marie Antoinette -- which I've packed with an older Edward Ka-spel piece that never fails to enchant. Why? Because we kept playing venues where the Dots had just performed, and it made me wish we'd arrived just a bit earlier.

One of the locations we did not have the privilege of arriving in whatsoever was Sweden -- home to many great acts, including Principe Valiente, who have just returned with their best work yet, in the form of Choirs of Blessed Youth. Look forward to a brand new track from them, and to hearing more from these guys in the future.

This episode also features new music from two heralded acts that we all thought were defunct. In a great turn of events, though, The Last Dance has started releasing new music again, two songs at a time, with the ultimate goal of a new full-length this fall. The lead singles, "Scars" and "Mesmerize" are available on iTunes and Soundcloud, respectively. Watch for another pair soon. Meanwhile, the former members of Veil Veil Vanish have re-emerged, slightly altered, in the form of Vaniish, who will release their new album Memory Work on Metropolis Records on June 10th.

In the dark-ambient/experimental-atmospheres realm, this episode features new music from San Francisco's Common Eider, King Eider, a collaboration between Trepaneringsritualen & Sutekh Hexen entitled One Hundred Year Storm, and fresh soundtrack work from Dominik Morgenroth, who also happens to be the bassist for our European tour-mates, the German funeral doom-legends Worship. As cool day jobs go, scoring for video games is pretty high on the list.

It's no surprise that the dark metal portion of this episode begins with a classic from Worship, going back to their earliest work, and highlighting one of my favorite parts of their live set each night. I watched them 14 nights in a row and never tired of hearing it. Beyond that, you'll hear a song from the new Profetus album, As All Seasons Die, followed by new music from one of the best support acts with whom we shared a stage -- in this case in Poland -- the avant-black metal band Outre, taken from their split with Thaw.

Speaking of sharing, I had the pleasure of sharing merch space with Alan from Primordial at Heavy Days in Doomtown in Copenhagen, where his new band Dread Sovereign were performing as well. The highlight of their set, for me, was a song called "We Wield the Spear of Longinus," taken from their new album All Hell's Martyrs, so you will hear that one on the way out.

All of that, plus: New Front Line Assembly remixed by Youth Code; Fresh soundtrack additions from Marco Beltrami's World War Z and Ryan Amon's Elysium; A triple birthday salute to three of horror's finest gentlemen: Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, and Christopher Lee; Selections from the vault of memory; and much more...

It's been a few weeks since the last show, and it will actually be about a month before the next episode arrives, so I've made this one extra-long to help bridge the gap. More about the reasons for that gap in a minute -- but for now, prepare yourselves for over 3 hours of music.

This episode begins with a slightly belated birthday wish for (the man, the myth, the legend) Robert Smith of The Cure, who celebrated his 55th earlier this week. In honor of that, you'll hear a pair of rarities (one live and one obscure) on the way in. Closely following that, the neo-folk fans who rarely get enough of that style here will revel in fresh sounds from New York's Blood and Sun, taken from their new album White Storms Fall.

Those lucky enough to find themselves in Chicago this weekend will be able to attend Convergence 20: First & Last & Always, celebrating 20 years(!) of the annual alt.gothic festival. This year's line-up includes The March Violets and the first-ever US show by UK-Goth-saviours Pretentious, Moi? -- both of whom you'll hear in this episode, in honor of the fact that I'd love to be there in person. But alas...

For the modern post-punk fans, you'll have several reasons to rejoice. First up is the Australian/German combo Ascetic:, who makes their debut here with a song from their Self-Initiation album. Next up is Florida's Astari Night, with a song from their new Stereo Waltz album, followed by Washington's Criminal Code, with an already popular dance track (here in Nashville, at least) from their No Device album.

We'll also dig a bit deeper in to the latest from Ottawa's goth-punk hybrid, Aube, from their 2013 Demo; Turkey's excellent darkwave/goth mixture, She Past Away, from their Belirdi Gece album; and the post-gothic/synth work of Seeming, from their new album, Madness & Extinction.
Now, the reason for my month away from podcasting comes into play during the dark metal set, which is comprised entirely of doom this time. I will be on tour with Loss for the better part of May, as we cross Europe for the first time in our career. In honor of that, the last portion of the show begins with the latest from our tour-mates, German doom-legends Worship, then leads into a set of bands we'll be playing shows with, including new material from three great French acts: Ataraxie, Funeralium, and Monarch!.

All of that, plus: Fresh atmosphere from London's Double Echo and Brian Tyler's soundtrack to the "Sleepy Hollow" television series (how could I resist?); The undying and explicitly 'saxual' new-wave-result of seeing "The Lost Boys" again on the big screen (with an introduction by Corey Feldman himself, no less); Selections from the vault of underrated songs; and more...

The first regular episode of 2014 arrives with another armload of new releases to expose, and current albums in which to dig a bit deeper. In honor of her upcoming Nashville concert (1/28 @ The Exit/In), the show begins with a wet, shadowy piece taken from the latest Chelsea Wolfe album, Pain is Beauty.

Making their debut on the show, but not on the scene, is San Francisco's recently resurrected original deathrock project, Altar de Fey. "Crimson Sin" is one of two new singles the band issued in 2013, and I look forward to more. Meanwhile, in Portland, Shadowhouse is stirring the post-punk pot with their new 7-inch, Haunted, from which we'll hear the b-side.

One of the more underrated acts, State-side at least, in dark rock/folk/post-punk has to be New Model Army -- a band with integrity and talent to spare, that somehow continues to fly under the radar of so many. You'll get a taste of their new album, Between Dog and Wolf, and if you like that, I encourage you to work backwards through their catalogue.

Several cool digital singles came out in the past two weeks, including the return of Ohio's The Wake, who were one of the finest and most overlooked US gothic rock bands of the '90s. Their new single, "Rusted," is available here or here as both an original version and a remix. Also issuing a new digital single is Mexican deathrock band Acid Bats, whose Srita. Destrucción can be picked up for free right here.

Not to be outdone, darkwave/goth veterans Clan of Xymox have released the first single from their forthcoming album, Matters of the Mind, Body and Soul. You'll hear their curiously titled "Love's On Diet" on this episode, immediately following another dose of the fully-addictive new Night Sins album, To London or the Lake. Even before that, fellow Philadelphians Theurgist will have dazzled you with your second taste of their new DeathBed EP, which you can get here.

In the dark metal portion of the show, we'll sink one cut deeper into Aokigahara Jukai, the latest from Australia's Thrall, after partaking in a wave of the new Hopeful Machines album. HM, as you may know, is the more experimental electronic arm of Steven Archer from Ego Likeness. You can grab the last remaining copies of the limited edition of The Spring of the Drowned Girl right here.

All of that, PLUS: More '80s horror-soaked synth-work from the new Allesandro Parisi album, La Porta Ermetica; Birthday nods to both John Carpenter and David Bowie; Touring news; Classics from the vault; and more.

It seemed fitting to give the onset of this episode an ethereal feel, settling into the atmosphere at strange rates, as the weather patterns slowly turned their focus to the cold, wet stillness of the oncoming winter. So, after an opening track from Coil, the show begins with an unusual new piece from Kinit Her, taken from their new Hyperion release, courtesy of Pesanta Urfolk.

While atmospheric selections will continue for a bit after that, and pick up towards the end of the show as well, never fear a lack of driving dark rock. Making their debut on this episode is the UK band Carnival Star, whose digital single "Black Rain Down" should sit comfortably with fans of gothic rock's most iconic forefathers. Not to be outdone, Finland's Beastmilk will give you another relentless taste of their widely hailed new album, Climax.

In the modern post-punk realm, you'll hear further new music from Wax Idols' latest album, Discipline & Desire, followed closely by some classic deathrock, leading into some modern, politicaly-driven deathrock from the infamous "Nuke York" band Anasazi, who have released several cassettes and even a flexi single into the underground this year.

In the electronic realm, Nashville's own brand new project Becoming the Devourer makes their debut on this episode with a track from the just-released EP, DecemberHoveringOut (get it here). BTD just did a couple of shows with Ego Likeness, showcasing a sound (and visuals) reminiscent of a post-rock attitude if it were applied to modern electro. Worth a listen, to be sure.

In the realm of fresh EBM, you'll hear a debut from Ukraine's Ginger Snap5, who offer an infectious sort of high-energy electro-industrial on their new Snapped By You album, followed by the closing track from the brand new System Syn album, No Sky To Fall, which has just been released on Metropolis Records.

At the dark metal end of the spectrum, you will hear one of the two new tracks from Ash Borer's new Bloodlands EP, followed by a deeper cut from the latest Monarque album, Lys Noir. Then, closing the show, Amarok's lengthy doom-laden contribution to the just-issued Amarok/Hell Split.

All of that, PLUS: Further explorations of the latest albums from Vaura and Silent Scream; Vault-robbed classics from Thergothon, Skinny Puppy, Swans, and even Japan; an accidental dip into early '80s creeping soundtrack horrors; and more.

This year, Easter and the 15th anniversary of the death of Rozz Williams almost collide. Make sure you spend the day searching not for hidden eggs, but for Christian Death or Shadow Project albums you don't yet own. Despite being a little early, I paid my traditional sonic tribute to Rozz's life in the arts at the top of this episode, with a selection of his poetry, followed by the song that serves as his own, beautifully written epitaph.

Since last we spoke, I had the absolute pleasure of witnessing Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds live, and it went above and beyond all expectations. One of the best shows I've seen. In honor of that, you'll hear the title track from his latest album, Push the Sky Away, on the way into the first full set.

This episode features new music from both former members of the legendary Faith and the Muse. First, a deeper cut from Monica Richards' sublime new Naiades album, and, later, the title track of the new EP from William Faith's The Bellwether Syndicate. I can already tell that "The Night Watch" will go down in history for me as one of the year's most infectious anthems. I just can't play it loudly enough.

Making their debut on this episode with a solid entry into the new wave of post-punk: Vancouver's Spectres, with a slice of their new album, Nothing to Nowhere. You'll also hear the late-but-great 'Coffin debut of Chicago's Cemetery, with a selection from their oft-reprinted 2011 demo cassette. Speaking of strong contenders in the modern goth/deathrock scene, Italy's In Loving Memory (or ILM, to some) have just compiled their work from 2005-2010 on a new release entitled Collection, from which I will share with you the first song I ever heard from the band.

Also new on this episode: A remix from the new XP8 album, Burning Down, as prepared by Nashville's own Cryogen Second; a deeper cut into The Twilight Garden's new CD, Hope; and a selection from Where Drowned Suns Still Glimmer, the new album from The Synthetic Dream Foundation.

All of that, PLUS: More of Brian Tyler's score from "John Dies at the End;" further into the latest albums from Atriarch, Killing Joke, and Light Asylum (see their video here); one bitter tear over not getting to see Morrissey in concert; some great darkwave and deathrock from the vault, and much more!

For this episode, I spent a good deal of time in the vaults, collecting new sounds from forgotten sources, to go along with the sounds of this episode's new releases. There are many seamless matches to behold, if you ask me. The show begins with Lycia doing a Joy Division cover, taken from a rare tribute entitled Ceremonial, and many other obscurities are dropped in along the way.

Not to concentrate on obscurities, though. This weekend in Nashville, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds will be playing, so the first full set begins with one of my favorite live tracks, and one of their best-known hymns, done in a memorably aggressive manner. You can see the band's full tour dates here, to see if you're lucky enough.

One of my most anticipated releases of this year has been the physical version of The Night Watch EP, from Chicago's The Bellwether Syndicate. This new band combines the talents and taste of William Faith (Faith and the Muse, Christian Death, etc.) and DJ Scary Lady Sarah, among others, to emerge with a solid new face for post-punk/gothic rock, with a side of shoegaze. It was hard to pick which song to share first, but the lead track, "All Fire," is pure anthem, so prepare yourself to sing along.

Also new to the show are further cuts from the latest Grooving in Green album, Stranglehold, and the new Red Sun Revival album, Running From the Dawn. Both of these English acts provide updates to traditional goth rock sounds, and fly the proverbial flag with vigor. Speaking of vigor, New York City's Anasazi make their debut on this episode, with a dose of pure deathrock adrenaline, taken from their new Attic Noise EP.

In the industrial realm, you'll new music from Italian EBM/Industrial forefathers Pankow's latest, Shun the Cure They Most Desire, along with a taste of the newly reissued double-disc collection of cEvin Key & Dwayne Goettel's recordings as Doubting Thomas, entitled Infidel. Both are new from the Metropolis Records label.

Also from the Metropolis roster, I throw the spotlight on God Module's current tour with The Ludovico Technique, Mordacious, and Frontal Boundary, which will roll through Nashville next week, but you can see the full tour dates here to find the show nearest you. On the other side of the roster, Psyclon Nine's Nero Bellum makes a guest appearance on a new track from Dawn of Ashes, on the verge of both bands releasing new albums this year.

All of that, PLUS: Brian Tyler's score from the new Don Coscarelli film, "John Dies at the End;" more new sounds from Finland's Beastmilk; the overdue introduction of Portland's The Estranged to the show; more unexpected soundtrack selections, and further reaches into the deathrock, post-punk, and odd-music vaults.

This episode begins with a new B-side from London's Ulterior. "Arabella" was given away as a bonus track to those who helped launch the new album through the band's PledgeMusic drive. Unlike a lot of extras and bonus tracks, it's every bit as good as the material found on the band's new album, The Bleach Room.

Two seemingly unrelated pieces came together to inspire my next move, which was a dip backwards into the folk realms of the 1960s. It's not an area I often travel to on this show, but with legendary psychdelic '60s band The Zombies playing in my town next week, my head has been soaked in such sounds a lot as of late. Then, along came the desire to share some of the Simon-and-Garfunkel-esque, more contemporary sounds of In Gowan Ring, and a pairing was born. Kicking the first set off this way may be a curve-ball for some, but never fear. It gets traditional from that point on.

Speaking of traditional sounds, for those in search of new, yet traditional, gothic rock sounds, Baltimore's The Drowning Season may help fill that void. The band's new EP, Tomorrow's Gone features a heavy dose of 'Nephilim and Sisters' influence, and it's available for your inspection on their Bandcamp site, here.

This weekend in Nashville, we gather to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of our longest-running Gothic/Industrial night, +SALVATION+, where I've been DJing for most of those years. As I prepared for the event, poring over music choices and tons of old photos, I decided to do a musical retrospective, highlighting the music that was played in the clubs, and on this show, ten years ago. Listen for two sets based in 2003, the first focusing on goth, post-punk, and darkwave, and the second on electro-goth, industrial, and (Terror)EBM.

Speaking of 10 year anniversaries, God Module's Empath album, their second release, turns 10 this year as well. In honor of that, the band has reissued the album with a newly revamped  bonus track that you'll hear on this episode. They're also mounting a tour in honor of that anniversary. See the dates here.

All of that, plus: Two new & different faces of the current doom scene, a track deeper into the new album from The Twilight Garden, obscure film score music rescued from a crackled print, another historically great band with a profoundly confusing name, and more...
