The first regular episode of 2014 arrives with another armload of new releases to expose, and current albums in which to dig a bit deeper. In honor of her upcoming Nashville concert (1/28 @ The Exit/In), the show begins with a wet, shadowy piece taken from the latest Chelsea Wolfe album, Pain is Beauty.

Making their debut on the show, but not on the scene, is San Francisco's recently resurrected original deathrock project, Altar de Fey. "Crimson Sin" is one of two new singles the band issued in 2013, and I look forward to more. Meanwhile, in Portland, Shadowhouse is stirring the post-punk pot with their new 7-inch, Haunted, from which we'll hear the b-side.

One of the more underrated acts, State-side at least, in dark rock/folk/post-punk has to be New Model Army -- a band with integrity and talent to spare, that somehow continues to fly under the radar of so many. You'll get a taste of their new album, Between Dog and Wolf, and if you like that, I encourage you to work backwards through their catalogue.

Several cool digital singles came out in the past two weeks, including the return of Ohio's The Wake, who were one of the finest and most overlooked US gothic rock bands of the '90s. Their new single, "Rusted," is available here or here as both an original version and a remix. Also issuing a new digital single is Mexican deathrock band Acid Bats, whose Srita. Destrucción can be picked up for free right here.

Not to be outdone, darkwave/goth veterans Clan of Xymox have released the first single from their forthcoming album, Matters of the Mind, Body and Soul. You'll hear their curiously titled "Love's On Diet" on this episode, immediately following another dose of the fully-addictive new Night Sins album, To London or the Lake. Even before that, fellow Philadelphians Theurgist will have dazzled you with your second taste of their new DeathBed EP, which you can get here.

In the dark metal portion of the show, we'll sink one cut deeper into Aokigahara Jukai, the latest from Australia's Thrall, after partaking in a wave of the new Hopeful Machines album. HM, as you may know, is the more experimental electronic arm of Steven Archer from Ego Likeness. You can grab the last remaining copies of the limited edition of The Spring of the Drowned Girl right here.

This episode kicks off with a brand new track from Germany's Bloody Dead and Sexy, whose experiments in deathrock and modern goth rock are among the best currently circulating, so new music from them is the sort of news that is always good. Their latest album is entitled Bad Ambient, and you can find out more about it here.

A band with quite the buzz behind them right now is London's Savages, who have quickly jumped into the international spotlight with their catchy-yet-confrontational post-punk sound. They've already landed tour slots with Portishead in Europe, and Queens of the Stone Age in the US, and to get you ready to see them, you'll hear a selection from their new album Silence Yourself.

Quite by accident, this episode brings in a trio of debuts from Los Angeles bands. First up is the indie post-punk of Cold Showers, with a taste of their latest Love & Regret album, which has now been followed by a brand new single. The already-noteworthy Bestial Mouths have released a single from their forthcoming self-titled album that sees the band pushing the boundaries of their deathwave combination of synths, deathrock, and unlit noise.

In the industrial realm, you'll find the third of the L.A. acts that are new to this episode, in the form of Chiildren (yes, that's the correct spelling), whose fusion of industrial, noise, and harsh metal sounds has been catching people off guard on their latest EP, The Other People. While we're in the realms of dark industrial tones, you'll get another slice of Kalpamantra's new Apogee compilation (get it free right here), in the form of Nam-Khar.

On the way out, you'll get to be the judge of the controversial, yet also widely praised, new single from San Francisco's Deafheaven. With all the questions about whether a band from a black metal background is allowed to name their album Sunbather, or have a bright pink cover, or incorporate sounds that are on the uplifting side, one might get distracted from whether or not it actually sounds good -- so I'll let you check it out and see.

You'll hear all of that, PLUS: Another accidental trilogy, in the form of '70s/'80s horror-prog; a look back at Lycia's monumental Cold album to celebrate its much-anticipated release on vinyl; a third trilogy, in the form of three epic-length doom songs (because: 3 of everything!); several rarities and b-sides from the post-punk/deathrock vault; and much more...

Sadly, between the last episode and this one, we lost another musician: Christopher David, vocalist/songwriter for Judith, as well as the former bassist for Requiem in White. This episode begins with a small tribute to him, and to his work, in the form of a song from each of those acts. I do not have much information on how he passed, but may he rest in peace.

Brand new to the show for this episode is fresh post-punk from Russia's Twinmachine, whose new album Tomorrow That Never Was can be heard here. While you're in the post-punk mood, you'll also hear further new sounds from Vancouver's Spectres, whose Nothing to Nowhere album was first thrown in the spotlight on the last episode. For even more of the upbeat/aggressive side of new post-punk, you'll get another taste of New York City's Anåsazi, whose infectious sound has not left my speakers in recent weeks.

Also new to the show for this episode: Music from Roque Baños' score for the newly rebooted/remade Evil Dead film. Much has been said in favor of this version of the movie, and I liked it myself, but it was the music that struck me most, so you'll hear two selections from that album on this show.

For accuracy's sake, I must correct an error I made when speaking about Mute Angst Envy on this show. While their 1991 album Archetype/Trust stood as their only work for quite some time, it was not their only release. Many years later, in 2004, the band regrouped and released South 11th Street, which I will be sure to feature on a future episode, so the record can be set straight. Sometimes I speak too quickly on these shows (and sometimes, it's really, really late).

For this episode, I spent a good deal of time in the vaults, collecting new sounds from forgotten sources, to go along with the sounds of this episode's new releases. There are many seamless matches to behold, if you ask me. The show begins with Lycia doing a Joy Division cover, taken from a rare tribute entitled Ceremonial, and many other obscurities are dropped in along the way.

Not to concentrate on obscurities, though. This weekend in Nashville, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds will be playing, so the first full set begins with one of my favorite live tracks, and one of their best-known hymns, done in a memorably aggressive manner. You can see the band's full tour dates here, to see if you're lucky enough.

One of my most anticipated releases of this year has been the physical version of The Night Watch EP, from Chicago's The Bellwether Syndicate. This new band combines the talents and taste of William Faith (Faith and the Muse, Christian Death, etc.) and DJ Scary Lady Sarah, among others, to emerge with a solid new face for post-punk/gothic rock, with a side of shoegaze. It was hard to pick which song to share first, but the lead track, "All Fire," is pure anthem, so prepare yourself to sing along.

Also new to the show are further cuts from the latest Grooving in Green album, Stranglehold, and the new Red Sun Revival album, Running From the Dawn. Both of these English acts provide updates to traditional goth rock sounds, and fly the proverbial flag with vigor. Speaking of vigor, New York City's Anasazi make their debut on this episode, with a dose of pure deathrock adrenaline, taken from their new Attic Noise EP.

In the industrial realm, you'll new music from Italian EBM/Industrial forefathers Pankow's latest, Shun the Cure They Most Desire, along with a taste of the newly reissued double-disc collection of cEvin Key & Dwayne Goettel's recordings as Doubting Thomas, entitled Infidel. Both are new from the Metropolis Records label.

Also from the Metropolis roster, I throw the spotlight on God Module's current tour with The Ludovico Technique, Mordacious, and Frontal Boundary, which will roll through Nashville next week, but you can see the full tour dates here to find the show nearest you. On the other side of the roster, Psyclon Nine's Nero Bellum makes a guest appearance on a new track from Dawn of Ashes, on the verge of both bands releasing new albums this year.

All of that, PLUS: Brian Tyler's score from the new Don Coscarelli film, "John Dies at the End;" more new sounds from Finland's Beastmilk; the overdue introduction of Portland's The Estranged to the show; more unexpected soundtrack selections, and further reaches into the deathrock, post-punk, and odd-music vaults.

This first episode of February 2013 begins with a new graphic (above) and a pair of somber acoustic tracks. The first one, "Le Vertige Du Vide (JR)" by ROME, is a stripped-down re-examination of an older song, interpreted in a more personal manner for the close of the recent "Fester" single. Following that, a selection from the latest Unto Ashes CD, Burials Foretold.

Lotus Feed returns to the show with a punchy number from their latest album, So Close... So Far, which sees the band continuing on its post-punk/goth path, but hitting perhaps a bit harder this time. We delve another track deeper into Ulterior's The Bleach Room, which has just emerged on vinyl. You can get that here. Also in the realm of good, solid modern goth, you'll hear another pulsing anthem from the new Grooving in Green album, Stranglehold.

As mentioned previously, I've been on quite the Black Ice kick as of late, so I decided to find out what happened to the band, whose website had grown rather quiet. My digging turned up the fact that several members had resurrected a project called Red Voice Choir, which had run alongside the existence of Black Ice for a time. As it happens, both bands were quite active in 2007, when they each released impressive full albums. In honor of that, you'll hear a "Then, and (also) Then" set, spotlighting what each project was doing at the time.

Continuing with the new releases, you'll take a deeper cut from the World's Greatest Horror Rock Band, Calabrese, who are about to wrap up a brand new video. Sweden's Brotherhood weave goth rock with synth-pop influences on a further cut from ...Turn the Gold to Chrome, while Germany's Aeon Sable ease us into the dark metal portion of the show as they apply a heavier sound to their goth influences on a track from their new Saturn Return album. Finally, a selection from the latest Katatonia album, Dead End Kings, makes it long-overdue debut on this episode.

All of that, plus: Another great damnbient journey from the new Treha Sektori album, some personal 'Coffin classics and underexposed recent releases from the vault, and a spotlight on this weekend's "Days of the Dead" convention happening in Atlanta, Georgia. Among the many great guests are Eerie Von (Danzig/Samhain), Ace Frehley (Kiss), and a nearly full cast reunion from one of the greatest horror films ever made, 1985's "The Return of the Living Dead." Cult Fiction Underground w/ DJ Ichabod: What's Next and What to Expect on August 25th

Coming up this Saturday night (August 25th), for those in the Nashville area, is the third installment of "Cult Fiction Underground with DJ Ichabod." It's a new monthly event that pairs cult films -- from the world of atmospheric horror and exploitation -- with cult music, in the form of goth, deathrock, post-punk, darkwave, and horror soundtracks.

So, for those that love the first hour of "Out ov the Coffin," it's as though I'm broadcasting it live from a dark, '70s underground bar, after we've all just watched a cult horror movie in the adjoining theatre. This month's event will start with Jess (Jesus) Franco's most celebrated film, "Vampyros Lesbos," a 1971 journey into atmospheric 'vampsloitation,' featuring a soundtrack that took on a life of its own. Here's the trailer [in German & Not safe for work!], to put you in the mood:

To keep things going as soon as the credits roll, you'll be treated to a mix of dark music & horror soundtrack clips, while you hang out with the other like-minded cult fiction fans and have a beer or five. To give you an idea of precisely what type of music will be played, here's what was played last month.

This episode begins with new music from Brooklyn, New York's Light Asylum, whose full length debut Light Asylum proves to be another great showcase for singer Shannon Funchess' ever-impressive, deep, powerful, dramatic -- and even operatic -- voice, which takes their '80s-steeped electro/darkwave music into many new dark and danceable arenas.

Speaking of singing to impress: Amidst news of vocalist Jaz Coleman's apparent and confusing disappearance this week, you'll hear music from Killing Joke's new album, MMXII. It's another solid release, loaded with their signature atmosphere, biting lyrical content, and, of course, Jaz's soaring -- and sometimes absolutely serrated -- voice.

Earlier this week, Germany's afmusic offered up a free, 63-track retrospective of the many genres of music they've been releasing up to this point, offering fans of goth, darkwave, post-punk, and many other styles a whole lot of sounds to check out. Three selections are featured on this episode (from Amada, The Foreign Resort, and M!R!M), but you can grab the whole collection right here.

Also featured on this episode: New mid-paced doom/dark metal from Italy's The Foreshadowing, who return this month with a new album entitled Second World; fresh experimentation from Chicago's Locrian, who also return with a new release this month, entitled The Clearing & Final Epoch; and even some newly released live material from Loss, recorded at March's Scion A/V showcase for Profound Lore Records. That whole live compilation (also featuring Pallbearer, Wolvhammer, The Atlas Moth, and Yob) can be downloaded for Free right here.

All of that, plus: New horror-inspired alternate soundtrack music from France's Neon Rain (who seem to have some interesting mixtapes available); a whole set of new and classic material for the goth-punks among us; another musical trip to Nolan's Batcave; and more -- for a total of two and a half hours of current and classic dark music.

With today being Friday the 13th, I thought this would be a good time to make the shift to labeling each show with Friday's date, instead of the traditional Thursday time-stamp. This makes things more realistic, considering that each new episode is uploaded on a Friday afternoon, after having been recorded on a late Thursday night/early Friday morning.

This episode begins with my excitement over the upcoming U.S. concerts from ROME, who have become one of my all-time favorite bands since their inception in 2005. To date, they have only performed once in the United States, but there will be four shows on our soil next week, all in California (see those dates here). I am fortunate/crazy enough to be flying out to see two of them, myself, so this episode begins with one of my current favorite songs, taken from the recent Die Aesthetik der Herrschaftsfreiheit triple-album collection.

Italy's Christina Plays Viola have issued a new promo EP for 2012, further exhibiting their '80s/'90s goth influences on such tracks as this episode's "Apocryphal Supremacy." You can grab that EP right here. Meanwhile, fellow Italians Chemical Waves have released another new single, The Great Dictator (free download here), which again features two versions of the single/title track, along with a more experimental/instrumental track, which is the one I found myself drawn to this time.

Ukraine's Nightchild A. -- an alternate project from one of the founders of The Nightchild -- emerged this week with a new instrumental EP entitled Images. The project serves as a place for material that doesn't quite fit the main project, having been inspired by such things as the soundtrack to the film 28 Days Later, which I paired them with on this episode. A video has also been created for their featured song "Abandoned Places."

Having just been confirmed to play Dragon*Con 2012, Calabrese return to the show this week with another undeniably catchy horror rock anthem from their brand new Dayglo Necros (you can score your own copy of it right here). For those who are also going to the Con this year, I hope to see you in the crowd when they perform. Ego Likeness returns on this show as well, this time with a dancefloor-filler from their new East EP. You can still order one of the last remaining copies of that one here, if you hurry.

Nebraska's Strap on Halo make their debut on this episode with a new, pre-album single. They will be joining such acts as Entertainment, Ex-VoTo, Lestat, and many more at the Age of Decay festival in Jacksonville, FL on September 22nd of this year. Since not many goth-specific American festivals happen these days, you might consider making the drive for this one. Details here.

More reasons to listen to this episode? It should be a fun night.
