Dragon Con, Dragon Con, Dragon Con!!!  

This bonus episode is (unofficially) all about Dragon Con, THE ultimate Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Comic Book, Horror, Pop-Culture, Film, Television, Music, Art, and everything-else-that's-cool convention, held annually in Atlanta, Georgia over Labor Day Weekend (August 28th - September 1st this year). In addition to panels, parties, and costuming, they also happen to feature a number of concerts from Darkwave, Industrial, and Goth bands, which is how I was first drawn into the fold back in 2005 -- which means that this will be my 10th year!

This episode features sounds and songs entirely related-to and inspired-by this year's guests, fan panels, and bands that will be performing live -- including brand new music from Voltaire and Bella Morte, along with songs from other new and returning acts like The Cruxshadows, Ayria, I:Scintilla, The Ghosts Project, Platform One, The Nathaniel Johnstone Band, Unwoman, and Marquis of Vaudeville.

On the playlist below, you will find not only the list of everything played on this podcast, along with links to each artist featured, but you will also find my notes on where to catch each related guest or performer at the convention (in small print below each name) -- because I'm here to help. Now, some of you will know me as the Assistant Director of The Horror Track, so you will no doubt find a lot of information on what we're doing this year, but I've made sure to highlight topics of interest from all across the convention's giant and mighty footprint on this episode.

NOTE: The Horror Track is located in the Westin, with most panels based out of the newly-renamed Peachtree Room on the 8th floor (two floors up from the entrance level; same room as last year), but some of our panels will be held in larger rooms, such as the Westin's Peachtree and Augusta Ballrooms, or the larger halls in the Hyatt or Marriott.

Just to clarify: There was no February 14th episode, so you haven't missed one. Due to studio sessions with my band, that episode was postponed until now -- which means that this brand new episode contains even more new music than it normally would. Behold!

Many great new post-punk/deathrock acts have come to my attention in the early part of this year already, hitting the scene from across the globe: England-by-way-of San-Francisco's Double Echo make their debut on this episode with a track from their traditional-goth-leaning Life Inside/Rupture/Sylvia online release. From Italy comes the frenetic post-punk of Soviet Soviet, whose Fate album crept in at the tail end of last year. From Denmark comes some impressive deathrock, in the form of Metro Cult's New Space/Ghost 7-inch (pun intended?). And, from Chicago, the band Population blows through with a song from their White Crosses EP.

Meanwhile, in Turkey, the darkwave/post-punk sounds of She Past Away make their debut on this episode as well, with a taste of their Belirdi Gece album. And who could discuss darkwave without mention of one of the art form's pioneers, Clan of Xymox? The Dutch group have returned with Matters of Mind, Body, and Spirit, from which you will hear a deeper cut this time.

This has also been a good month for the debut of side projects. Bella Morte's Andy Deane has emerged with two new songs from his Small Precious Lights project, which explores a dark ambient/electronic sound. Nearby, Steven Archer (of Ego Likeness) has just released Stoneburner's The No Chamber, which features experimental electronic landscapes based on the chronicles of Dune. Meanwhile, in the Pacific Northwest, Assemblage 23's Tom Shear has just released Oceania, the new album from his project Surveillance.

You'll also get a taste of the new God Module album, False Face, just before we slide into a dark metal set that is filled with new music as well: A pair of bizarre, experimental black metal entries from Sweden's Stilla and Macedonia's Kult of Taurus, along with the raw, cassette-demo vibe of Finland's Cemetery Fog, and a closing debut from USBM act, Incursus.  

All of that, plus forgotten songs culled from post-punk, deathrock, dark metal, and psychedelic darkwave vaults, and more...

Nashville has been lucky enough to host some great live shows in the last week. Most recently, I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Chelsea Wolfe, performing as a headliner on the eve of a string of dates opening for Queens of the Stone Age -- I may not be a fan of QOTSA, but they have chosen some great openers recently. I encourage anyone in the path of Ms. Wolfe's tour plans to catch her live show, and in honor of that recommendation, I've included one of her older tracks on this episode.

This past weekend, I was also able to catch the much-talked-about Youth Code, when they came through town with AFI. Now, that crowd wasn't really sure what to make of a traditional EBM/industrial act, but I applaud AFI, too, for taking hungry young bands of different styles on the road and keeping things fresh. You'll hear a track from the new self-titled Youth Code record on this episode as well.

Speaking of classic industrial sounds, I take a stroll down that lane of memory on this episode, revisiting some of the '90s sounds that bolstered my interest in the genre. Not to be outdone by a retro-trip, though, you'll get a taste of the new Rabia Sorda album, Hotel Suicide, which experiments with new ways of moving people on the dance floor, while retaining the punch that Erk Aicrag is known for delivering behind the microphone with his main band, Hocico.

Meanwhile, in the realm of goth rock & darkwave, I'll unearth some of the late '90s gems that frequented this show's earliest playlists. Going a step further back than that, you'll also get a taste of the two new Sacred Bones Records releases that came out last week: Sanctuary: The complete Discography of cult anarcho-punk/deathrock act Vex, and the newly-compiled "Killed By Deathrock" LP, which highlights a collection of otherwise-forgotten deathrock and post-punk bands from the '80s, such as New Jersey's own Screaming for Emily, whom I chose to feature this time.

In this episode's last moments, as things turn from strange to stranger, Chicago's I Shalt Become will lead you away with a selection from their latest abstract black metal experiment, Louisiana Voodoo.

The first regular episode of 2014 arrives with another armload of new releases to expose, and current albums in which to dig a bit deeper. In honor of her upcoming Nashville concert (1/28 @ The Exit/In), the show begins with a wet, shadowy piece taken from the latest Chelsea Wolfe album, Pain is Beauty.

Making their debut on the show, but not on the scene, is San Francisco's recently resurrected original deathrock project, Altar de Fey. "Crimson Sin" is one of two new singles the band issued in 2013, and I look forward to more. Meanwhile, in Portland, Shadowhouse is stirring the post-punk pot with their new 7-inch, Haunted, from which we'll hear the b-side.

One of the more underrated acts, State-side at least, in dark rock/folk/post-punk has to be New Model Army -- a band with integrity and talent to spare, that somehow continues to fly under the radar of so many. You'll get a taste of their new album, Between Dog and Wolf, and if you like that, I encourage you to work backwards through their catalogue.

Several cool digital singles came out in the past two weeks, including the return of Ohio's The Wake, who were one of the finest and most overlooked US gothic rock bands of the '90s. Their new single, "Rusted," is available here or here as both an original version and a remix. Also issuing a new digital single is Mexican deathrock band Acid Bats, whose Srita. Destrucción can be picked up for free right here.

Not to be outdone, darkwave/goth veterans Clan of Xymox have released the first single from their forthcoming album, Matters of the Mind, Body and Soul. You'll hear their curiously titled "Love's On Diet" on this episode, immediately following another dose of the fully-addictive new Night Sins album, To London or the Lake. Even before that, fellow Philadelphians Theurgist will have dazzled you with your second taste of their new DeathBed EP, which you can get here.

In the dark metal portion of the show, we'll sink one cut deeper into Aokigahara Jukai, the latest from Australia's Thrall, after partaking in a wave of the new Hopeful Machines album. HM, as you may know, is the more experimental electronic arm of Steven Archer from Ego Likeness. You can grab the last remaining copies of the limited edition of The Spring of the Drowned Girl right here.

The 'Best of 2013' episode is coming up in just two weeks, which means that this episode is crammed with last-minute additions to the new music realm. Certainly not to be left off the year-end list is the latest from Philadelphia's current goth/deathrock/post-punk heroes, Night Sins, whose 2nd full-length, To London or the Lake, has just seen release.

Meanwhile in Finland, a whole lot of traditional goth/deathrock is springing up as well. Masquerade topped Cvlt Nation's list of the year's best deathrock on the strength of their 2013 demo, from which you'll get a taste on this episode. Also lauded on that list was Spain's Belgrado, who recently issued their 2nd album, Siglo XXI.

For those looking for an Xmas Special this year, there simply wasn't enough new material to out-do last year's gift, so I've re-uploaded the 2012 Xmas Bonus Show. Get it HERE or HERE. Not to be a complete "Bah-Humbugger," though, I have included The Cruxshadows' new Christmas single on this episode, which is available for free (or pay-what-you-want) right HERE.

It seemed fitting to give the onset of this episode an ethereal feel, settling into the atmosphere at strange rates, as the weather patterns slowly turned their focus to the cold, wet stillness of the oncoming winter. So, after an opening track from Coil, the show begins with an unusual new piece from Kinit Her, taken from their new Hyperion release, courtesy of Pesanta Urfolk.

While atmospheric selections will continue for a bit after that, and pick up towards the end of the show as well, never fear a lack of driving dark rock. Making their debut on this episode is the UK band Carnival Star, whose digital single "Black Rain Down" should sit comfortably with fans of gothic rock's most iconic forefathers. Not to be outdone, Finland's Beastmilk will give you another relentless taste of their widely hailed new album, Climax.

In the modern post-punk realm, you'll hear further new music from Wax Idols' latest album, Discipline & Desire, followed closely by some classic deathrock, leading into some modern, politicaly-driven deathrock from the infamous "Nuke York" band Anasazi, who have released several cassettes and even a flexi single into the underground this year.

In the electronic realm, Nashville's own brand new project Becoming the Devourer makes their debut on this episode with a track from the just-released EP, DecemberHoveringOut (get it here). BTD just did a couple of shows with Ego Likeness, showcasing a sound (and visuals) reminiscent of a post-rock attitude if it were applied to modern electro. Worth a listen, to be sure.

In the realm of fresh EBM, you'll hear a debut from Ukraine's Ginger Snap5, who offer an infectious sort of high-energy electro-industrial on their new Snapped By You album, followed by the closing track from the brand new System Syn album, No Sky To Fall, which has just been released on Metropolis Records.

At the dark metal end of the spectrum, you will hear one of the two new tracks from Ash Borer's new Bloodlands EP, followed by a deeper cut from the latest Monarque album, Lys Noir. Then, closing the show, Amarok's lengthy doom-laden contribution to the just-issued Amarok/Hell Split.

All of that, PLUS: Further explorations of the latest albums from Vaura and Silent Scream; Vault-robbed classics from Thergothon, Skinny Puppy, Swans, and even Japan; an accidental dip into early '80s creeping soundtrack horrors; and more.
