This episode of "Out ov the Coffin" begins with a deeper cut, the title cut, from the new Nox Novacula album, Ascension. What can I say that I haven't already said about this band? Other than the fact that the LP has been living on my turntable a lot since its release. Hopefully, I can bring them to Nashville on day...

 

The first full set of the show begins with new music from one of France's best imports lately, Varsovie, who give us the title track to their new darker-leaning, and often urgent take on post-punk, L'ombre Et La Nuit. From there, you're introduced to a new Chicago act, Rose Teeth, who so far have only a pair of singles (and a video) released, but they already have a lot of people's attention. Another new single from Floridian darkwavers Astari Nite follows closely behind (you're spoiling us with all this new music, guys!), leading us into our first taste of the new Cold Cave album, Fate In Seven Lessons, which presents a slightly more relaxed sound. We then slip delicately back to 1994 to revisit a simpler time, when neoclassical goth was something we may have taken for granted. The evidence? One of my favorite examples of what that style could yield, courtesy of Italian act Ataraxia. Rounding out the set is a debut from Costa Rican act Ariel Maniki and the Black Halos, taken from their new Strangers single/EP.

 

Set two draws us back in time, marking the anniversaries of many landmark albums in goth music. We begin on a sad note, marking the untimely passing of London After Midnight's longtime keyboard player Tamlyn, whose death was announced on the day this podcast was recorded. In memory of Tamlyn, and to mark the album's 25th anniversary this summer, the set is preceded by, and begins with, selections from their 1996 classic, Psycho Magnet. Rest In Peace, Tamlyn:

 

The anniversary set continues with a pair of songs from Faith and the Muse's Annywyn, Beneath the Waves, an album that made a huge impression on my younger goth mind upon its release, also in 1996. Mixing grand-scale presentation with an ethereal longing, neoclassical and non-traditional instrumentation, as well as orthodox goth and deathrock sounds, the album expanded my view of what goth could be, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Next, we mark the 30th anniversary of one of my top two SWANS albums, White Light from the Mouth of Infinity. Packed with many of the band's most brooding and lyrically self-deprecating songs, it also made a deep impression on me when I finally reached back to it later in the '90s. A pair of 40th anniversary selections round out the set, celebrating Killing Joke's less-talked-about, but still cult, What's THIS for...!, as well as Siouxsie & the Banshees forever-classic Juju album, both from 1981.
 

Set three starts with new music from one of the most revered of the ethereal darkwave acts, Lycia, taken from their new 10" EP, Casa Luna. Not to leave all the vault selections to the last century, the next two tracks celebrate the early 2000s, first with one of my favorite somber tracks from the expansive period that Velvet Acid Christ entered on 2006's Lust for Blood, followed by the 2001 (believe it or not) "O'Brother Sleep" single from Diary of Dreams, which saw the band rising to its peak in the electro-goth realm. After that, we dig deeper into The Awakening's new, and quite solid, album, This Alchemy. My fellow New Jersey mutant Caroline Blind (of Sunshine Blind fame) comes next, with a selection from her new Tribe (The Remixes) EP. Then, to close the set? Sadly defunct German goth-metal band Dreadful Shadows once dared to cover (and "rock out") The Sisters of Mercy's classic piano ballad, "1959." If you like the results, originally done in 1995, you can check out the new compilation of heavier covers that it is now collected on, "Black Waves of Adrenochrome: The Sisters of Mercy Tribute," (2021).

Set four follows the harder vibe that set three ended on, easing us into the dark metal realms with a song from the latest Calabrese album, Flee the Light. Why? Because they always feature largely on my summer playlists, so it's simply the season for them. Following those blood brothers, we hear new music from The Cult Sounds, with their cranked-up deathrock-leaning-towards-metal sound displayed nicely on their new Death of a Star album. As we continue to creep through the dark to the black metal chamber, we then witness the surprise return of Sweden's Ancient Wisdom! I did NOT expect that one, but I'm glad to have the project resurrected on 2021's A Celebration In Honor of Death. An intentionally-mysterious Balkan black metal act known as CMPT arrive next, with a taste of their new album Mrtvaja, before we close the set with the lead single from Wolves in the Throne Room's forthcoming 'Cascadian' black metal opus, Primordial Arcana. The band is now entirely self-produced and thriving in that decision, as evidenced by the accompanying video.

Finally, we close the show with new music from Amestigon (featuring members of cult Austrian acts Dargaard and Summoning), taken from a new 4-way conceptual black metal split entitled "SamaeLilith  A Conjunction_of the Fireborn."

This episode of "Out ov the Coffin" begins with new music from The Awakening. Primary member and composer Ashton Nyte has provided us with an array of styles from the band's past on the new album, This Alchemy, and -- as I so often do -- I find myself drawn to the moodiest of pieces first. So, despite there being many much more immediate, upbeat, and/or catchy songs on the album, I begin the show with the sparse and subtle refinement of one of the last tracks on the album, "Empty Garden."

The first full set begins with brand new music from Seattle's Nox Novacula. I've already said many nice things about this band in the past -- but why stop now? Simply put, they are one of the best and most promising current bands to step on the deathrock stage in recent years, and I am really glad to see them back with a new album. And they are back with something of a concept album this time, the story of which you will glean from the excellent video for this month's featured track, "Last Will and Testament."



Set one continues with a deeper cut from promising Texas darkwave act Sevit's new album On the Edge of a Darker Place, followed by a track deeper into Bleib Modern's latest, Afraid to Leave. We then revisit The Secret French Postcards's new Colours album for another taste, before diving into the vaults to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Cure's 1996 album, Wild Mood Swings. As I say in the break, I was initially not fond of this album, but I was still relatively new to the band's full catalog at the time. Long story short, I first saw them on the resulting tour, and they eventually became my favorite band of all time, so things have naturally changed, and "Want" has become a standard in their live sets, as well as one of my favorites. From there, we round out the first set with surprise new material from the ever-productive Soft Kill, taken from their humorously-titled new collection of demos and odd covers, Not Quite Dracula Music.

Set two, which is definitely the most brooding of this episode, begins with a deeper cut from Future Faces' latest album, Euphoria, before diving into a recent section of the vaults for a darkwave classic from France's Minuit Machine. We then go back for another dose of Canadian post-punk band Palissade's self-titled debut from the tail-end of last year, before hitting a double shot of profoundly moody anniversary pieces. First, we arrive at the 30th anniversary of one of the The Legendary Pink Dots' finest moments, and most serene atmospheres, 1991's The Maria Dimension -- which, in turn, leads us into the 40th anniversary of Echo & the Bunnymen's 1981 classic, Heaven Up Here, by way of the haunting wails of "All My Colours." As I mention in the break, I was first introduced to that song via a cover done by the criminally underrated '90s act, The God Machine (listen here). Finally, set two concludes with new music from Denmark's Tales of Murder and Dust, taken from their appropriately moody 2020 album, Fragile Absolutes. 

Set three kicks off with a pandemic-inspired new single from darkwave pioneers Clan of Xymox. The track, simply titled "Lockdown" is taken fro their new single Brave New World. Keeping with that momentary theme, we then hear the new Curse Mackey single, "Submerge," which also features Clan of Xymox. We then check back in with Canada's Ringfinger for some fresh darkwave from their new Echoes Fade EP, before traveling to Italy for new material from legacy darkwave act Kirlian Camera, taken from their mysteriously-titled new album, Cold Pills (Scarlet Gate of Toxic Daybreak). Going a track deeper into the new Hexennacht album from Momy Fortuna, we find the band daring to cover the legendary Goblin's theme from Dario Argento's technicolor witchcraft classic Suspiria. Finally, we begin a short tribute to Vincent Price to mark both his would-be birthday, as well as the 50th anniversary of his classic film, "The Abominable Dr. Phibes." Fittingly enough, Madre del Vizio steps up with their 2005 song "Dr. Phibes," to strike the right tone.
 

Set four takes us into the dark metal realms, beginning with a second dose of the new Tribulation album, Where the Gloom Becomes Sound. We then throw the spotlight on Nashville's own Unhallowed Eve, for some new dark synth work, released to celebrate Walpurgusnacht, or Chilling Sounds of Midnight's Blackest Bewitchment. Keeping in a similar vein, we visit the underside of the Middle Earth vault with Austria's Summoning, for the title track of their 2013 album, Old Mornings Dawn. Next, we get some brand new experimental folk/black metal from Romania's Sur Austru (featuring former members of Negură Bunget) taken from their new 2021 release, Obârșie. We then revisit 1996 again, this time to be reminded that Katatonia was at the peak of their harsh metal period at the time, with a classic from the album Brave Murder Day.

And, finally, we close the show with a dark ambient journey to send you home, courtesy of Beckahesten's new album, Tydor.

On this month's episode of "Out ov the Coffin," we cover an eventful span of time, marked by a number of anniversaries, passings, and, of course, great new music to make the journey onward more worthwhile. We begin the show, in fact, with one of my current favorite pieces of music, the engaging new single from Iceland's Kælan Mikla. "Sólstöður" steps in with a thoroughly satisfying answer to all questions about how the band would progress from 2018's still-potent Nótt eftir nótt album, offering not only a song with transcendent mood and atmosphere, but a video to match it all and bind the concepts therein. It's so good, in fact, that I will just embed it here, to encourage everybody to take a moment and soak it in:

 

The first full set begins with new music from French post-punk outfit Varsovie, with the lead single (and video) from their forthcoming album, L'Ombre et la nuit, which seems to see the band adding more brooding atmosphere to their punchy, driving sound. A Neph-esque new single from Germany's Sweet Ermengarde follows next, followed by a debut from Australian post punks, Sounds Like Winter. We then delve into the mid-'90s vaults for a selection from Italian band Dawn Fades, taken from their self-titled 1995 EP (sometimes credited as the "Fucking Face" EP, which definitely stays with you, haha). A debut from UK artist Coor Brow-Obles strolls in next, with a classic from the recently expanded edition of And Also the Trees' self-titled debut album on his heels. Notably, the early material from And Also the Trees was produced by Lol Tolhurst of The Cure, and the bands would later tour together, even doing some select dates together in recent years. 

Speaking of The Cure, set two serves a dual purpose: First, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of The Cure's holiest hours, their 1981 album, Faith, which is not only the inspiration for this month's artwork (which is a less abstract image of Bolton Priory than was used on the Cure's album cover), but also an endless personal inspiration for me -- and probably you, too. The second chapter in the band's first goth phase, Faith dove headlong into the bleak waters of the members' headspace at the time, emerging with such immortal classics as the Gormenghast-inspired "The Drowning Man," my personal favorite, which begins this set, and iconic mood pieces like "The Funeral Party," which would later (I maintain) inspire the music of Twin Peaks. Check out the live version of that one in this set to see for yourself. In between those two, you'll hear a rare live version of the title track that was recorded the night of the Tiananmen Square massacre, in which Robert Smith delivers an uncharacteristic, yet impassioned, piece about the events of that day -- which seems like something that bears repeating in the current world.

The second half of the second set serves as this year's tribute to the memory of Rozz Williams, on the anniversary of his death in April of 1998. This time, we travel back to the original 1981 recording of Christian Death's Deathwish, to celebrate its 40th anniversary. We then mark the 30th anniversary of the debut from Rozz's more metallic Shadow Project,with the opening track from that CD, followed naturally by Williams' own accidental epitaph: A selection from his spoken word piece "Dec. 30, 1334," merged with one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, "Flowers." 

Set three begins with a tribute to the life and musical works of Jim Steinman (November 1, 1947 – April 19, 2021), who died on April 19th. Known largely for his initial success writing for Meatloaf in the '70s, his deliciously over-the-top, theatrical approach to writing rock music yielded a string of unforgettable chart-topping hits with other artists, including the chill-inducing 1983 classic "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Originally recorded by Bonnie Tyler, I chose a distant piano version of that song (performed by Francesco Parrino) as the bed for the talk break that leads into this set, which begins with Steinman's greatest contribution to goth culture, The Sisters of Mercy's absolute club ANTHEM, "This Corrosion," which Jim produced back in 1987.

Robb Earls
(December 27th, 1951 – March 11th, 2021)

Following that, I mark the passing of a Nashville music pioneer, Robb Earls (December 27th, 1951 - March 11th, 2021). Early in his career, his bands Factual and Warm Dark Pocket helped put Nashville on the minimal synth and new wave maps, but he continued to work behind the scenes after that through his Sound Vortex studios enterprise, and released a more goth-leaning album of his own in 2001 with his project, This Midnight Stream -- from which you will hear the song "Head," in tribute.

Following those memorials, we move on to more brand new music, starting with the latest from Belgium's much-lauded Whispering Sons. So far, the singles from their forthcoming LP Several Others offer a moire stripped down sound, built on minimal electronic loops with a dry, direct vocal production, so we shall see how rest of the album compares this summer. Some new collaborative work from Twin Tribes comes next, with a remix done by Turkish darkwave heroes, She Past Away. You can find that remix, as well as many other star-studded collaborations, on the new Altars LP. Greek hard goth rockers The Black Capes creep in next, with their monstrous new single, "The Bride of Frankenstein," and, finally, we close the set with new music from Canada's Momy Fortuna. Taking their name from the witch in The Last Unicorn, the band offers a mix of ritualistic, neoclassical darkwave. 

Moving into set four, we are greeted with a slate of dark metal releases, divided equally between new releases and classics from the vault. First up is US black metal act Ringarë, whose Thrall of Winter's Majesty album was originally written in 2004, but just released this year. A deeper cut from Ukrainian black metal act Svrm's latest album Розпад comes next, followed by a Finnish national classic from Amorphis' 1994 album, Tales from the Thousand Lakes. New multinational black metal from Order of Nosferat flies in next, taken from their Necuratul LP, and the set closes with a memorial nod to the memory of Per Yngve Ohlin, known better to the music world as Dead from Norwegian black metal legends Mayhem. As the unfortinmate story goes, Dead took his own life on April 8th, 1991 -- 30 years ago this month -- so I close this set with a track the band's 1993 album, Live in Leipzig, one of the few surviving recordings to feature his vocals.

Finally, for no greater reason than the Easter season having reminded me of the video for this classic track, I close the show with one of My Dying Bride's greatest triumphs, "The Cry of Mankind," in its full glory. Bask!
