EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This episode begins with a small tribute to the memory and contributions of Thierry Sobezyk, co-founder, co-vocalist, and bassist for late-'80s French coldwave pioneers, Asylum Party, who died earlier this month. The fact that their songs can still be heard on playlists and dance floors worldwide, 30 years later, is a testament to his influence as a musician. Rest In Peace.

Showing some of that influence, set one begins with the first single from Texas darkwave duo Twin Tribes' forthcoming album, Ceremony. We then hear the 'Coffin debut of Italy's Japan Suicide, sharing some emotive post-punk from their new KI album, before sliding into new music from fellow Italians, Hapax, whose latest album, Monade, is a thoughtful journey through modern goth/post-punk. Up next is the return, after several quiet years, of Arizona's Audra, with a single from their forthcoming Dear Tired Friends., followed by an upbeat goth rocker from The Rope's new Lillian album, featuring the driving vocal performances that put them on my map. Finally, set one concludes with another great taste of trad-gothic rock from the new Sonsombre album, The Veils of Ending.  

Set two begins with another hot new single, this time from Florida goth/darkwavers Astari Nite. Going deeper into the dreamlike vibes, we then hear a deep cut from the new Drab Majesty album, Modern Mirror. Going into the vaults, we reach for a darkwave-ish obscurity from Black September (who, vocally, land between Ian Astbury and Morrissey), going back to the magical year that was 1986. Back to the present day, we check back in with Belarus post-punks, Nürnberg, for another taste of last year's Skryvaj album. I was surprised to learn that France's Lovataraxx will be playing live in Nashville on August 9th (and elsewhere, too), so I celebrated with a track from them, before closing the set with more music from the much-talked-about new She Past Away album, Disko Anksiyete. I also complain about missing the band's current US tour dates (see them here), but that's understandable, right?

The tour spotlight is turned on once again for set three, which begins with new music from New York's Silent EM, bridging darkwave, post-punk, and EBM sounds on their latest album, The Absence. Their label, Disko Obscura, has put together a tour with them and labelmates Ortrotasce, which will be rolling through Nashville on August 10th @ Fascination Street. Having realized the two bands were connected, I follow Ortrotasce with a related project from a few years back, Warmline. We keep the pace going with new electro-goth from New York's A Cloud of Ravens, before putting the brakes on for something brand new to the show: Berlin's captivating None, who provide a blanket of dark electronic submersion, which leads nicely in to the latest from L.A.'s Thief, who will soon bring their new Map of Lost Keys material to The Cobra in Nashville on August 27th.

Along with Thief, that August 27th show (and the tour it's part of) will include the first band we hear in set four: Oakland's Silence in the Snow, a tribal goth/dark-rock band, featuring a member of Lycus (and many other bands, because a good human drummer stays busy). Their new album Levitation Chamber is probably not what you'd expect from that résumé, instead having more in common with lesser-known mid-'80s goth acts than with modern doom. The UK's Lock Howl then provide a great transition between the goth and metal worlds, which leads us to brand new music from Slovakian black metal act Aeon Winds. The atmospherically-inclined should check out their new album, Stormveiled. We then get a third taste of Barshasketh's latest, self-titled black metal opus, which drops nicely into a vault-selection from Impaled Nazarene's 2000 album, Nihil.

After that, the show closes with a pensive, personal classic from Clan of Xymox (who will make up their missed US tour dates this fall), fittingly sealing this episode with their 1997 classic, "The Story Ends," taken from their underrated Hidden Faces album.

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

We begin this episode by marking this month's 40th anniversary of Joy Division's iconic 1979 debut album, "Unknown Pleasures." Insert your favorite t-shirt joke here, if you must, but let us not dismiss the huge impact this album had on every generation of goth and post-punk ever since, especially the current revivalist wave. I chose two of my favorite songs from the album to celebrate, connecting them with an excerpt from a 1979 BBC interview with Stephen Morris and Ian Curtis. 

The first full set begins by delving deeper into the thematically-complex new album from Luxembourg's ROME, Le Ceneri Di Heliodoro. While the sound looks back a bit to the band's neo-folk and martial roots, the lyrics and themes dive into the murky waters of current European identity politics, both reflecting and causing confusion along the way. In a recent interview, though, songwriter Jerome Reuter talked about his fear of oncoming war, and his desire, as a pacifist, for peace, in spite of all the tensions and division.

From there, we reach back into the highest-of-quality '90s goth vaults for a personal favorite from California's sadly short-lived Praise of Folly, before launching into another new track from 1919's latest catchy deathrock work, Futurecide. We then visit Greece for a brand new dark entry from Data Fragments, whose new self-titled album reminded me of the lost sound of '80s German goth band Remain In Silence. Reaching back for a second dose of 1995's silver age, we pull out a goth rock obscurity from Germany's Pictures of Agony, taken from their On A Burning Ground cassette.

Set one draws to a triumphant close with another instant-classic from the brand new Sonsombre album, The Veils of Ending (order it here). This song holds special value to those of us in Nashville, as the band recorded their new video for said song during their appearance at Fascination Street, here in Nashville, back on June 8th. If you were there, or perhaps if you wish you had been, you can see them smoke The East Room's stage in that video right here:


Set two begins with music from the eagerly-anticipated new album from Turkey's She Past Away. The album is called Disko Anksiyete, and its release will be followed by an extensive tour that actually includes US dates (see them here). A debut from fellow darkwavers Nuovo Testamento comes next, featuring the vocals of Chelsey Crowley (Crimson Scarlet) on their new EP, Exposure. Former Nashvillian (currently making "elfwave" in Georgia) Λ°C drops in right behind, with a new digital single that asks the eternal question, "Are you Coming to the Function?" We then visit Poland for more new darkwave from Undertheskin's latest, N E G A T I V E, before introducing Dutch post-punk/darkwave outfit GOLD, with a track from their new Artoffact Records release, Why Aren't You Laughing?. Finally, we close the set with the first single from the forthcoming Drab Majesty album, Modern Mirror, which has thus far shown the band continuing to conjure sublime, ethereal darkwave for the new age. 

Set three starts a track deeper into Death and Flamingos, the latest from the infamous Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows, which shows them expanding their trademark melancholia with the addition of rock-centric guitars and drumming. Athens, Georgia's Tears for the Dying follow with a taste of their new Charon album, flying the flag for traditional deathrock/goth-punk sounds, which lead us back to the vaults for a 1989 spirited rarity from Ravencathaus. Adding some industrial flair to their post-punk sound, All Your Sisters then jumps in with another track from Trust Ruins, which is followed by another taste of Drab Majesty's more rocking side-project, VR Sex, from their new Human Traffic Jam album. Finally, set three closes with an infectious cover of Real Life's immortal '80s anthem, "Send Me An Angel," as pepped up a bit by Nuke York's own Blu Anxxiety.

Set four begins the dark metal portion of the show, but retains a certain deathrock flavor by starting with the chorus-washed guitar sounds of a deeper cut from the new Devil Master LP, Satan Spits on the Children of Light. They'll be on tour with Obituary this year. We then hear some new, yet traditional, Greek black metal from Funeral Storm, featuring Varathron members on their new album, Arcane Mysteries. After revisiting the latest from Sargeist, we delve deeper into the new EP from Canada's Délétère, Theovorator: Babelis Testamentum. Closing the set is some newly reissued Italian doom from Abysmal Grief, which leads us to the a nice, spacey show-closing track from the brand new Pinkish Black album, Concept Unification.

This episode starts with a refreshing blast of brand new orthodox gothic rock, in the sacred '90s tradition, courtesy of Virginia's Sonsombre. Their forthcoming album, The Veils of Ending, will see the dark of night on June 1st, via Post-Gothic Records (order it here). One week later, on June 8th, they will perform live at Nashville's monthly goth / post-punk / deathrock / darkwave dance night, Fascination Street. I'm particularly stoked about that one, as I will be DJing that as well, of corpse.

The first full set begins with more new music from Ritual Howls, whose western-tinged, deep-voiced goth style shines once again on their new Rendered Armor album. We then keep that '90s goth vibe going by marking the 20th anniversary of Seraphim Shock's Nightmares for the Banished EP, followed by a classic from the vaults: 1991's "Pray" by UK act Dream Disciples. Some recent trad-goth from Germany's Merciful Nuns comes next, before continuing the new music with Drab Majesty's side-project VR Sex, who have already followed their debut EP with a full length entitled Human Traffic Jam. Seattle's Spire Circle close the set with their new Cure-esque single, "Ghosts with Teeth."

Speaking of The Cure, set two is all about them! This May marks not only the 30th anniversary of their fan-favorite and completely essential Disintegration album, but also the 40th anniversary of their debut, Three Imaginary Boys, too. And if that wasn't enough, May also marks the 25th anniversary of Alex Proyas' movie adaptation of "The Crow," whose soundtrack featured the very Disintegration-esque instant 'Cure classic, "Burn." You'll hear selections in this set marking each of these anniversaries, along with some vintage interview clips with Robert Smith that date back to 1989, discussing the then-new sound of the future classic that was Disintegration.

Set three begins, unintentionally, with three labelmates: First, new music from Chicago's also-Cure-inspired Wingtips (who will be playing Nashville this weekend), followed by a new track from ThouShaltNot frontman Alex Reed's current post-everything project, Seeming. Both new singles are to be found on the new pay-what-you-like compilation, Artoffact Records 2019. Also featured on that compilation, with a different song, is the next artist in this set: Known primarily as a member of Iceland's Kælan Mikla, Sólveig Matthildur's new solo album Constantly In Love explores more electronic and ethereal territory. The new single from Sweden's Agent Side Grinder comes next, giving us a taste of their new singer and sound. An ohGr-fronted classic from the Pigface vaults comes in next, leading nicely into a track from Curse Mackey's new album, Instant Exorcism.

Set four begins with a taste of All Your Sisters' new, and already quite talked-about, industrial-post-punk slab, Trust Ruins. We then venture to Poland for brand new music from Undertheskin, taken from their driving new post-darkwave collection, N E G A T I V E.  Moving more towards the anarcho-deathrock side of the spectrum, we then hear new music from New York's Pawns, from their Monuments of Faith EP, followed by the first single from the UK first-wavers 1919's new album, Futurecide. We then close the set with further cuts into the latest releases from current-deathrock's brightest hopes, Seattle's Nox Novacula. (their Hitchhiker/Drug EP can be found here), and original bay area deathrockers Altar de Fey, from their new LP, The Insatiable Desire... For More.

For the last full set, on this somewhat extended show, we start with some fresh, mostly-instrumental, post metal/neo-classical work from Indiana newcomers Deeper Graves. Drifting onward from there, we revisit My Dying Bride's surprising rendition of the classic "Scarborough Fair," before falling all the way into doom with a recent classic from Profetus. How about something new, you say? Well, the set closes with music from Canada's Ossuaire, taken from from their brand new album, Premiers Chants. And, after a short talk break, the show comes to a close with more new Canadian black metal, this time courtesy of 'Coffin favorites Délétère, whose new EP Theovorator: Babelis Testamentum has just arrived.

*Quick housekeeping note: Due to travel on my part, separate episodes for March and April were not possible, so they were merged into this one podcast, and presented on the border of the two months. The next new episode will launch on mid-May.

This episode begins, as is the tradition every April, with a song in memory of Rozz Williams (November 6th, 1963 - April 1st, 1998) on this, the 21st anniversary of his death. Even now, two decades later, when I sit down to choose which music to play in his honor, I'm amazed at how my attachment to his work and his spirit has not faded in the slightest. For his iconic contributions to the worlds of goth, deathrock, and the darker arts in general, he's been given the first and last words of this episode. In this case, I've chosen a song from Christian Death's second full-length album, Catastrophe Ballet, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.

Before we even get to the first full set, you'll hear me introducing the show over the main title from one of my favorite film's, 1979's Phantasm, which celebrates its 40th aniversary this week(!), hence the film's iconic artwork adorning this episode's graphic. If you haven't watched it in a while, definitely check out the recent 4k restoration. And, stay tuned for a cover of Fred Myrow & Malcolm Seagrave's classic theme later in this show...

The first full set begins with brand new music from one of current-deathrock's brightest hopes, Seattle's Nox Novacula. The band have just released their first piece of vinyl, a new 7-inch entitled Hitchhiker/Drug (grab that here). From there, we jump to Sweden, for a taste of the much-talked-about debut from newcomers Isolated Youth. The material on the Warfare EP has been compared to an early post-punk take on Placebo, merging two mutually appreciated, but separate, fields. We then get another taste of Virginia's Sonsombre, from their most recent full-length, A Funeral for the Sun, before diving deeper into Altar de Fey's latest deathrock ritual,The Insatiable Desire... For More. A visit to the vaults to extract an early-2000s electro-deathrock classic from Fear Cult is next, followed by another new track from Nuke York's Blu Anxxiety (ex Anasazi), which should probably be accompanied by their wild new video, available here.

Set two begins with fresh darkwave sounds, first from newcomers Pass/Ages, out of Florida, who present some pleasantly creeping dark synth atmosphere on their new album, Taken Underneath. This leads nicely into a further taste of Kælan Mikla's excellent new darkwave/post-punk journey, Nótt Eftir Nótt. We then ask for more from French darkwave/synth act Hante. (who I am excited to see live in Portland on April 25th), and receive the opening track from her new FIERCE album, which leads into a further taste of the latest from California's post-punk/synth act Creux Lies. I've already heaped a lot of praise of Belgium's Whispering Sons already, but I will continue, as I reach back into their catalogue, this time sharing the opening track from their first EP, Endless Party. Superb post-punk/goth/darkwave/etc. Finally, we close the set with new music from VR Sex, the new, and more-rock-ish alter-ego of Drab Majesty's Deb Demure, whose new EP Horseplay has just been released via Dais Records.

Set three heads back towards deathrock and post-punk territory, starting with the weirdly-western-goth vibes of Ritual Howls, who've built a sound all their own on their new Rendered Armor album. Long-awaited new music from Frank the Baptist's new Road Omen album comes next, with an ode to ditching Valentine's Day in favor of a "Second Halloween." Now, there's a ballot initiative I could get behind! Fellow Germans Diät are up next, with a taste of their Positive Disintegration LP, followed by non-German, but also umlaut-obssessed Ötzi, with a track from their new Part Time Punks session. Another long-awaited album, the foretold coming of Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows' take on a deathrock sound, has finally landed, so I've chosen a song that represents that take fairly well, although many tracks on  wind up landing in a zone somewhere between trad goth rock, almost doom-metal guitar work, and the signature Sopor Aeternus neo-classical sound infusion. Regardless, the result is one of the best SA&tEoS albums in a years. Finally, to close such a set, I revisited a classic from The Legendary Pink Dots, taken from their recently remastered and reissued 1988 classic, The Golden Age.

Set four takes us into the relams of dark metal, but don't let that stop you non-metal fans, as more non-metal is yet to come! Philadelphia is the star of the first few selections here, beginning with a double-dose of Zorn -- first from their aptly-titled Cemetery Man EP (chosen to help me mark the 25th anniversary of the classic film of the same name), then one from their latest, self-titled EP. And, speaking of the rising Philly black-metal/horror-punk crossover scene, the masters themselves, Devil Master, arrive next, with a further sip from the chalice that is their Satan Spits on the Children of Light LP.  A reach into second-wave black metal's earliest days comes next, with a track from Ulver's first demo, Vargnatt, followed by a second look at the new, slef-titled Barshasketh album. Italy's Selvans return on this episode, with a third taste of their Faunalia album, which leads us to a closing classic from Entombed's Left Hand Path. I normally don't dabble in the traditional death metal, but in light of the 40th anniversary of the orignal Phantasm movie's release this week, I couldn't resist their take on the main theme.

Last, but absolutely not least, we lay the show to rest with two tributes: First a small nod to Scott Walker -- a highly-influential, yet mostly-underappreciated artist until recent years -- who died this past week. Then, some final words from Rozz Williams on the way out, once again in honor of his memory, on the anniversary of his suicide on April 1st, 1998. Rest in Peace, both of you.
