This month's episode of "Out ov the Coffin" looks over the horizon of a weary world at what might be the end of our long ordeal. We can only hope. In the meantime, we turn our attention to this spring's emerging crop of music, with a lengthy list of new and recent releases on which to shine our newfound light. We begin the show with new music from Sevit, out of Dallas, Texas. The band offers a generous spread of sounds on their first full-length collection, On the Edge of a Darker Place, starting out in the realms of synth-washed deathrock, then gradually edging towards more darkwave sounds. I chose "As Animals" to open the show this month, as it struck me much the same way as Cinema Strange's debut did some 20 years ago, and that is definitely a compliment.

The first full set begins with impassioned new music from Germany's Bleib Modern, taken from their Afraid to Leave album. We then move into the 'MH radio edit' of The Wake's "Break Me Not," taken from a new DJ single built around alternate versions of what might be my favorite track from their 2020 album, Perfumes & Fripperies. The Secret French Postcards, actually from Sweden, make their debut next with a song from their Colours album, which answers the unasked question "what if you crossed the chemically-relaxed goth vocals of Tiamat with the music of The Mission, then made The Frozen Autumn play the result without synths?" That is also a compliment, because the result is uniquely suited for long, pensive night drives on empty roads. We then visit the vaults for some '90s French coldwave from Nuit D’Octobre, before marking the 20th anniversary this year of Judith's "Play of Light" album, a relic of the nearly forgotten turn-of-the-century 'romantigoth' sound. Finally, we close the first set with new music from Luxembourg's ever-prolific ROME, who have just issued the cheeky new album Parlez-Vous Hate, offering songs that seem to be about the ensuing debate over their meaning. 

Set two begins with fresh darkwave from New York's A Cloud of Ravens, offering a first taste of their new release, Another Kind of Midnight. Not to be out-Ravened, Russia's Raven Said fly in next, with a late-arrival of orthodox gothic rock from their 2020 release, Beyond The Darkest Hour. Philadelphia's Deep Tissue then make their debut, holding up the more punk side of the deathrock equation with their latest album Patience or Fear, followed by another 2020 release that I'm debuting on this episode, Suite Nº Zero by Protgual's Morte Psíquica. We then plumb the vaults for something previously unheard from that bittersweet year, 1986, in which Sweden's Gregor Samsa gave us their Sexplosion 7-inch. Nürnberg rounds out the set with two selections from their latest collection of Belarusian post-punk, Paharda, the second of which plays under the talk break.

Set three begins with new music from Greek darkwave act, Kalte Nacht, taken from their also-quite-driveworthy self-titled 2020 release. We then return to Ukraine for more of the sublime sounds of The Glass Beads' new Therapy album, before slipping into the surreal, experimental landscapes of Night Sky Body, a project by a former member of Tennessee's own Pain and Its Relief, for those old-school enough to remember them from the early days of "Out ov the Coffin." The focus then shifts to the more electronic side of the spectrum for the last few songs of the set: First, a new remix from System Syn's If It Doesn't Break You, then a seldom-heard vault selection from Das Ich's 2002 Anti'Christ album, and, finally, one of the first successful hybrids of industrial and black metal to come from the industrial side of that imaginary fence, courtesy of 2005-era Psyclon Nine. 

Set four sees us diving headlong into actual black metal, beginning with new music from Arizona's Suicide Forest, taken from their brand new album, Reluctantly. Some epic-length Ukrainian black metal follows next, from Severoth's new Vsesvit album, before we witness the return (following a ten year absence) of Australian black metal cult, Nazxul, with their new Irkalla album. As can be seen from this month's graphic, the February episode of "Out ov the Coffin" came to fruition under the influence of winter's mounds of snow and ice, by which many of us were trapped inside. But that provided some good opportunities for listening to great dark music, so here we are...

We begin by marking this year's 25th anniversary of Lycia's "Cold" album, a masterpiece of mood that I have something of a personal relationship with, but that's a story for another time, when certain recordings may yet see the light of day. For that, as well as more obvious reasons, I went with the song "Colder," which holds greater significance at this time of year than it would in October, when the album will actually hit its quarter-century mark.

The first full set begins with new music from Florida's Astari Nite, who tease us with a new single, "All Else is a Curse," rendered in their signature darkwave sound. From there, we hear a debut from Canadian coldwave act Palissade, taken from their self-titled 2020 release. Praise of Folly, one of the greatest obscure goth bands of the '90s follows next, loosely marking last year's 25th anniversary of their only album Disillusioned. If you've never heard the full release, find it somehow. You will not regret it. While we're in the land of overlooked '90s goth, we get a classic from Dream Disciples, taken from their 1991 debut EOP, Veil of Tears, before returning to the present for another debut -- this time we meet Swiss post-punk band Future Faces and their 2020 release, Euphoria. Finally, the set concludes with another brand new single from Georgia's Entertainment, serving as the second face of their forthcoming Horror, Part 1 EP. A video for the single is promised soon as well...

Set two begins with an infectiously synth-y new stand-alone single from Sweden's A Projection, followed by a new entry from Italy's Fall Shock, who are among the best of the acts that have emerged recently with Drab Majesty's influence dreaming on their sleeves. New (and quite catchy) Russian post-punk from Karlův Týn follows next, with a selection from their late 2020 release Мерцание ("flicker"), before we slip all the way back to 1986 for a soaring anthem from the vault, courtesy of The Snake Corps -- a band formed from the ashes of Sad Lovers and Giants when they initially broke up in 1984. We then return to Georgia for a debut from NAW, who may not have intended to make something with deathrock appeal, but I love it when that happens anyway. "Weed Them and Reap" is the single from their forthcoming Head Pain. Closing out the set, Rosegarden Funeral Party finaly lands in the 'Coffin this month, with the opening track from their 2020 EP, At the Stake -- one of several releases that just narrowly missed inclusion on last month's "Best ov 2020" episode. 

Set three begins with somethig I missed a couple of years ago: Greek act Angel’s Arcana, and a track from their 2018 album, Selva. They have a more recent album out that I will get to soon as well. Meanwhile, another new single from Belgium's A Slice of Life keeps things rolling, followed by a further cut from Grandeur's 2020 relase The Illusion of Power. A new single from New York's NOIR lands us in even more electronic territory, ushering in the hybrid goth/industrial/metal sound of Ludovico Technique's new single, "Up to the Flames." Closing the set is a song from one of the greatest goth/metal fusion albums of all, 1996's Buried Again album from Germany's Dreadful Shadows. In the early 2000's, the band would merge into Zeraphine, who shed the metallic sounds in favor of more post-punk/alternative influences, and in the last decade to a more electronic incarnation, the currently-active Solar Fake.   

The dark metal set begins with a pair of songs from a memory hole into which I recently fell while rewatching the 1997 VHS compilation, Beauty in Darkness, which attempted to capture that era's peak of goth and metal heavily interbreeding. The results were a mixed bag, not always backing up the theme, but it cannot be argued that some dark metal classics were represented therein. The two whose riffs I could not get out of my head were Sentenced's "Nepenthe" and Hypocrisy's "Roswell 47," from 1995 and 1996 respectively. After that, we visit Austria for some new black metal from Transilvania's brand new album Of Sleep and Death. A stand-alone single from Celestial Season comes next, showing a more pensive, experimental side of the band's recently revisited doom metal era on "Even This Shall Pass Away." We then pay our respects to the majesty of Ukrainian black metal with new music from Svrm, taken from their brand new album Розпад ("decay").

Finally, the show comes to its final rest with the title track from Profetus' 2019 album The Sadness of Time Passing -- because, to be honest, that feels like a good anthem for the past year, and a fitting way to bookend this episode with appropriate winter moods.

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: 

We start this year, as is the tradition, by looking back on the best parts of the last year. We all know 2020 was one of the most difficult years many of us have had, or will yet have, so I'll dispense with any attempts to sum up those aspects. Instead, I offer you a collection of my favorite music that emerged in spite of it all, as pared down from an abundance of quality goth, post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, coldwave, industrial, film scores, dark metal, and all the regions between.  

 

Of corpse, many cuts had to be made in order to bring you what is essentially a "Top 40 Countdown," sans the countdown aspect. Instead of ranking my choices, I've mixed them together in a way that avoids sticking to the same type of sound for too long, while loosely maintaining a flow. Consider this a sonic time-capsule, or a themed mix-tape of the songs, artists, and albums that stood out, made the strongest impressions, were often stuck in my player, or were attached to the defining moments of the year that was 2020. During the talk breaks, you will hear music from some of the standout films and television shows of the year as well. And while the accompanying graphic certainly includes the cover art from a lot of my personal highlights, it acts as more of a representative collage than a chart. I just won't give you an inch, will I?

 

As with every year, there are a few entries on the list that weren't covered on the show before. Either they slipped in under the wire, or emerged late in the year -- which is why I do these "best ov" shows in January, to give things room to breathe. That said, this will not merely be a clip-show or rehash, you're also getting some brand new music! So, without further ado, welcome to the "Out ov the Coffin: Best ov 2020" Edition (aka The January 2021 Episode). I hope you enjoy this collection. In closing this long, strange year, we arrive at both the mouth of winter and the crest of the new-fallen holiday season. Those two factors will certainly color this episode's tone, but it's not a fully-themed show. Scattered throughout, you will find odes to the season at hand -- cold, sparse songs, fit for a frozen, pensive landscape. You'll find a special set in the middle carrying most of that weight, along with a handful of actual Christmas songs, but the bulk of the show will be comprised of the new, non-seasonal dark music that you've come to expect, along with a few classics from the vaults to balance the journey.

We begin with a not-so-holly-jolly song from the new ROME album, The Lone Furrow. Perhaps it's the difficulty of our times speaking, but the tone of "Kali Yuga Über Alles" just felt right at the front of the line this month. From there, we kick off the first full set with some trad-goth music from Nashville's own Shadow Assembly, whose new album Arcane Fusion features many guest vocalists that you will recognize, including Sonsombre's own Brandon Pybus. What you'll hear on this episode (despite my mix-up in the talk break) is actually an older track featured on Cleopatra's new compilation, "The Unquiet Grave 2020." We then dip back to 2018 for some energized post-punk from Blood Bells (also featured on said compilation) before finally checking out a song from the new Rosetta Stone album, Cryptology, which sees the return of more traditional songwriting to the project, but with more stripped-down, less "wet" production than the '90s incarnation.

We then visit Ukraine for a dose of sparse, melancholic post-punk/minimal-darkwave from The Glass Beads' new Therapy album. Having finally issued their first physical release in many years, The Fairmount Chronicles: Chapter One, Seraphim Shock returns with another new single, this time of the piano-based and more somber variety, which suits this episode just fine. Speaking of which, The Last Dance goes beyond somber to heartbreaking, with a set-closing, December-themed classic from 2005's essential, Once Beautiful.

Set two is where the seasonal songs have mostly been, uh... quarantined? Rogue and/or The Cruxshadows start things off with their 2020 holiday song -- a bouncy, danceable number this time (grab it here) -- followed by an equally danceable, but far more frosty take on winter's lore by Iceland's own ice queens, Kælan Mikla. Mephisto Walz then give us "A Winter Song" from their more recent output, before we dive into a pair of especially-goth takes on traditional Christmas songs, courtesy of Lycia (featuring The Unqiet Void) and Eva O. Both songs appear on Projekt Records' "Excelsis 1 (A Dark Noel)" compilation, which turns 25 this year. Finally, a new entry from Detroit's Vazum rounds out this set by turning the very same holiday classic you just heard on its ear as a deathrock/darkwave inversion. You can find that, and a couple of other twisted takes, on their holiday EP, Vazumnacht.

 

Set three returns us to reality, beginning with a small tribute to the memory of Dariusz Malinowski, bassist/vocalist for cult Polish post-punk band Siekiera, who died earlier this month. In his honor, we begin with the immortal title track from the band's landmark 1986 album, Nowa Aleksandria.

A 2018 cut from NONE's Havoc album continues the set, leading us to a new single from Chile's Diavol Strâin. And I'm late to the party on this, but Oakland's Cult Strange steps up next, featuring at least one member of Altar de Fey, to give us even more quality California deathrock from their early-2020 EP, Rites of Passage. The Nephilim-esque sounds of Sweden's The Last of Us come riding into the sunset after that, leading us to the set's closer from New Skeletal Faces, who have a good buzz around them at the moment for their late-2019 release, Celestial Disease. If you like to walk the borders of deathrock and metal, don't sleep on this one like I did for a while. And check out their new video here. 

 

The dark metal set begins with a pair of new Finnish black metal releases. First, a taste of the new Horna LP,  Kuoleman Kirjo, then -- to make sure you have not a moment's rest -- a new one from Valravn's Prey LP jumps right in.
