PODCAST: August 18th, 2011

Perhaps it's the early hours I've been keeping lately -- perhaps it's something more inspired, too -- but I've found myself in a very shoegaze mood this week, so this show started out with eyes focused downward, to the sound of some classic Slowdive, moving into (the unfortunately defunct Projekt band) Tearwave.

From there, I featured some more new music from The Empire Hideous, who is probably not a band that would quickly connect themselves to a term like shoegaze, but their just-released final album "The Time Has Come" has several passages of burning guitar lines and washed-out, introspective vocals that feel quite at home in such an environment.

We also heard more new music from Seattle's God Module, whose latest single, "Rituals," features several noteworthy remixes. And, as I mentioned last time, I seldom enjoy remix EPs, so take that as a sign that these remixes do something interesting or different with the source material.

This week also brought new sounds from the German industrial band Dance or Die, whose new album "Nostrodamnation" just landed on Metropolis Records. Sometimes, with current industrial, it's the instrumental song that sticks out, and that happened a couple of times this week. So, for those who think of such tracks as fillers or throwaways, think again. Those just may be the ones that get radio play.

The rest of the show featured such things as: atmospheric Bowie-ism, internationally obscure deathrock, some classic goth/industrial club tracks, bands whose current tours will bring them through Nashville (like Die Sektor and The Ludovico Technique), and some local post-punk/darkwave from Nite Nite, who will be playing this coming Wednesday night @ The End in Nashville.
