It's that time of the year again, kiddies! Time to set aside, just for a moment, what you might normally expect from this show, because HARK! It is the return of the "Out ov the Coffin Xmas Bonus" show! It's an episode unlike all of the others, packed with silliness, wide-eyed childhood nostalgia, pop-culture holiday specialties, sacred traditions, a dash of saucy sacrilege, and some sheer Ghoultide Horror for good measure.

Now, last year's Christmas 'Coffin simply couldn't be topped -- so I ripped it back open, added some fresh ingredients, spoke to it with this year's tongue, and wrapped it back up for all of you bad little boils and ghouls.

To translate the above: This episode includes all of the musical selections from the 2011 Xmas Bonus show, which had in turn been built on parts of the 2010 episode before it (so it's not unlike a constantly re-gifted fruitcake, really). Not wanting to give the same gift twice, though, I've re-recorded all of the talk breaks to include current information, AND added a brand new set of howliday music, just for 2012.

The new entries for this year's special are largely taken from one great new collection that Projekt Records just released, entitled Ornamental. It's a two-disc collection of goth, shoegaze, darkwave, steampunk, ambient, and cabaret artists, doing either traditional Christmas songs, or non-traditional seasonal originals. You can order it here, once you've checked out the brand new songs on this episode from Ego Likeness, Abney Park, Erik Wøllo, and really cool one from Black Tape for a Blue Girl, who covered the theme from the David Bowie-helmed war drama, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

This year's other new selection comes from The Cruxshadows, who once again served up a free (or donate-what-you-like) Christmas single for their fans in 2012. You can read the story behind this new single here, while you're grabbing the file and even the artwork. While you're there, you can also get your digital hands on their holiday singles from the last few years as well -- two of which are also featured on this show. I swear they're not paying me to play them thrice in one episode, but what can I say? They've given out a lot of free Christmas songs.

So, buckle up, everybody! We're about to magically string together such seemingly unrelated acts as Oscar the Grouch, Batman, King Diamond, Boris Karloff, Alien Sex Fiend, Voltaire, The Cryptkeeper -- and so many more -- and then jam them right under your tree. Enjoy...

p.s. For those celebrating the holidaze in the Nashville area, here are some events:
12/21 + 22: "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation @ The Belcourt Theatre.
12/21 + 22: "Silent Night, Deadly Night" @ Logue's Black Raven Emporium.
12/31: "+SALVATION+ vs. The Apocalypse" New Year's Eve Party @ The Rutledge.

As we barrel towards the end of the year, bands keep releasing great music, and I double my efforts to capture it all. A lot of writers and bloggers throw their best-of lists out in mid-November, which I feel shafts a good number of great releases; hence, The "Out ov the Coffin: Best ov 2012" show will come out on the first Friday in January instead. Look for that, as well as a revamped edition of the "Out ov the Coffin Xmas Bonus," coming just in time to re-gift it to somebody special.

As stated above, great albums are still coming out as we speak, so this episode begins with something from the brand new Ulterior album, The Bleach Room. They put out one of the best albums of last year, and now they've already punched me right in the face with one of my favorite songs of this year, so I put it right at the top of the show. Order the album here. And now.

Two other much-talked-about bands return on this episode as well. O.Children are back with Apnea, from which you'll hear the song that has thus far grabbed my attention hardest; and fellow English act Bat For Lashes have returned with The Haunted Man, from which I've selected a somber track befitting the season.

We'll hear from Sweden's Brotherhood, who have just issued a free single for their cover of Depeche Mode's Photographic (get it here); as well as ROME, with the title track from their new EP Fester, which also appears on their new album, Hell Money (order that here). We'll also go a cut deeper into The Deadfly Ensemble's latest collection of avant-deathrock, An Instructional Guide for Aspiring Arsonists, which can be ordered here.

Leaning into the unconventional side of the electronic spectrum, both with their own take on modern neo-classical music, you'll hear new entries from Chicago's Saltillo, taken from their Monocyte album, and Austria's Soap & Skin, from their latest album, Narrow.

In the dark metal portion of the show, you'll hear more brand new tracks from: Portland's Atriarch, from their much-applauded Ritual of Passing (get it here); Neurosis, from their latest album Honor Found in Decay; and Ash Borer, taken from their Cold of Ages album (get it here).

Also on this episode: More new music from Dead Can Dance; cryptic, unnamed fresh ambient music; a nod to the would-be birthday of Jim Morrison; some should-be classics from the vault; and Middle Earth's greatest band, Summoning, helps celebrate the release of the first Hobbit film.

p.s. As mentioned on the show, here's a link to the event page for +SALVATION+ vs. The Apocalypse, Nashville's Gothic/Industrial New Year's Eve event. I'll be DJing there, so if you're in the area, join us.

Having returned from my travels with a huge pile of new music to play, this episode is filled to the brim with over a dozen fresh dark entries, as well as a selection of classics, a few requests, updates on current tours, current sounds, and the latest news. Here's what to expect...

The show formally begins with a selection from An Instructional Guide for Aspiring Arsonists, the latest album from The Deadfly Ensemble, which once again features the talents of Lucas Lanthier (Cinema Strange), as well as Marzia Rangel from Christ vs. Warhol, just to name two. Having signed to Projekt Records for this release, Stateside fans should find it easier to come by in record stores. If not, it can be ordered here.

Proving yet again to be among the most prolific of artists, ROME have returned with not only a new EP (Fester), but a whole new album in the form of Hell Money. Needless to say, it's wonderful, but don't just take my word for it. Listen to one of my favorites on this podcast to feel it yourself, then order it here.

On the verge of hitting the road with Velvet Acid Christ (who also have a new song on this episode), The Twilight Garden returns, this time on Metropolis Records, with the title track from their new album Hope, cementing their ethereal take on the darkwave/post-punk style.

Also returning on this episode: Germany's Aeon Sable, with an upbeat post-punk/goth preview of their forthcoming Saturn Return album; Killing Joke, with a Jaz-in-your-face selection from their latest, MMXII; and Ludovico Technique, with the song for which they've just released an official video. Check it out here:

Also listen for a pair of premieres from: NOIR, a new darkwave/electronic project from Athan Maroulis (Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Spahn Ranch), whose new single is entitled My Dear; as well as some requested new post-punk sounds from the Bay Area's The Soft Moon, taken from their latest release, Zeros.

In the dark metal portion of the show, you'll hear a brand new track from Portland's Atriarch, whose new album Ritual of Passing has just come out on Canada's Profound Lore Records. If the idea of taking deathrock influences into apocalyptic doom excites you as it does me, you can pick that album up here. Meanwhile, Idaho's Wolvserpent, who have just inked a deal with Relapse Records, have elected to publicly release the initial demos for their forthcoming Perigaea album, so that fans can witness the progression of the material. Listen for a taste of it at the close of this show, and grab your copy of those demos here. And, as a bonus, you can watch their video preview below:

You will hear all of that on this episode, plus: A collection of recently gathered cult vampire film themes, a bit of melancholy-yet-responsible nostalgia, otherwise forgotten gems, and even more current & classic music to suck the light out of your surroundings.

This episode was recorded in the midst of much preparation and excitement over the upcoming Loss/Worm Ouroboros Northwest Tour 2012, so forgive me if it's a bit self-indulgent. It's almost all I can think about right now, and we'll be performing alongside so many great bands that I couldn't resist throwing the spotlight on them.

At the top of the show, you'll hear fresh material from our tour-mates in Worm Ouroboros, who are on the road in support of their latest album, Come the Thaw. Later in the show, you'll hear a set from some of other bands we'll be sharing a stage with -- in cities like Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, Arcata, San Francisco, and Oakland -- which will include brand new music from Bell Witch (whose new album Longing is available here) and Ash Borer, whose latest CD is entitled Cold of Ages (available here). See all the tour dates & info here.

When I return, it will be almost time for the great Turkey Holocaust of 2012 -- but before we get to that, we in Nashville will see the arrival of this fall's Ego Likeness / Cryogen Second Treacherous Tour 2012, which will hit The Rutledge on November 21st (event page here). In light of that, I've thrown the spotlight on those two bands as well. Since most of you are not in Nashville, you can see their full tour dates here.

This episode also brings brand new music from Germany's Golden Apes, whose forthcoming Riot can be heard and pre-ordered here. Ludovico Technique (also on tour) return with one of my favorite selections from their latest album, Some Things Are Beyond Therapy. And for those who wait patiently until the end of the program, the show concludes with a brand new track from Neurosis, taken from the just-released Honor Found In Decay.

All of that, plus: Seldom-heard soundtracks, a dose of classic deathrock/post-punk, and a total run-time of nearly three hours!

PODCAST: October 19th, 2012 THE HALLOWEEN SPECIAL 2012!

[STREAM this episode (on Mixcloud)]
(or scroll to the bottom to stream it here)

Here it is! This year's "Out ov the Coffin" Halloween Special, clocking in at its longest running time yet -- just over four hours! My honorary "co-ghost" for this year is Samhain (pictured above), who may have been a minor character from "The Real Ghostbusters" cartoon in the '80s, but his influence can be heard all across this episode.

What to expect in your treat bag this time? A generous handful of traditional Halloween classicks, recently deceased newcomers to the Halloween circuit, plenty of spooky selections from the very back on the 'Coffin's vaults, bloody splashes of film dialogue, soundtracks, movie trailers, old-time radio spots, and even some brand new entries for this episode from Bella Morte and Velvet Acid Christ. PLUS, in addition to a 3-hour traditional Halloween special, I've included a "hair-rasing" bonus hour at the end.

The sets are divided according to style, with a Goth set, a Deathrock/Horror Rock set, an Industrial/Darkwave set, a Dark Metal set, and finally, the bonus '80s "Scare" Metal salute. Yes, a Halloween-themed look back at classic '80s horror, as seen through the eyes of a pre-teen, hair-metal-obsessed Ichabod. I put that one at the end so some of you could skip it -- but why would you want to? It's the trick to balance all of those treats.

The full playlist is below. It's very detailed, listing all of the various dialogue samples, movie trailers, songs, and other sounds -- with links! The talk breaks are marked, too.

Only two more weeks remain until the annual "Out ov the Coffin" Halloween Special hits the internet. Mark your calendars for October 19th to make sure you "grave" the date. In the meantime, please enjoy this brand new episode, featuring a host of new talent and further glimpses into the latest goth, post-punk, industrial, and dark metal releases.

From the UK, this episode sees the debut of Red Sun Revival, a band quite reminiscent of Fields of the Nephilim. Of course, their album, Running from the Dawn, was produced by Steve Carey of The Eden House -- which contains members of FOTN -- so that makes sense. Meanwhile, Canada's The Silence Industry have returned with The Maw of Sleep (stream it here), once again bringing noticeably aggressive drumming to an atmospheric goth rock landscape that would otherwise be reminiscent of older Bella Morte or Machinegun Symphony.

Also new to the show this time: Belgrado, out of Barcelona Spain, whose high-energy approach to post-punk/deathrock is sure to please fans of Xmal Deutschland, older Killing Joke, or New Days Delay. Their self-titled debut can be heard (and acquired for free) right here. And for the dark metal fans, Minneapolis, Minnesota's False make their debut on the show with their track from the just-released Barghest/False split LP through Gilead Media. Stream it here; order it here.

Returning with deeper cuts into their latest releases on this show are: Philadelphia's Night Sins who give us another taste of their New Grave EP (available for free here); an impressively catchy new song from The Ludovico Technique's Some Things Are Beyond Therapy, which is quickly shaping up to be among my favorite industrial releases of the year; and Velvet Acid Christ, who have released a second brand new video from their new CD, Maldire, which I will just go ahead and embed here:

All of that, PLUS: We'll reach way back for some mid-'70s roots selections, spend a couple of songs in the Autumnal fields of mid '90s gothic doom, revisit some obscurities from the vaults, and float for a moment in several atmospheric stops along the way.

With all of the traveling and special editions I've done lately, it's been a little over a month since the last new traditional episode came out -- which means that this one is absolutely loaded down with new sounds. So, here's what you're about to hear:

The fresh blood begins with the new radio single from Dead Can Dance, whose Anastasis album has now been officially released in a variety of packaging options. Ego Likeness follows closely with another great track from their East EP, this one being the first of two covers of Sting's music that will appear on this episode, both for the first time. The second cover appears later in the show, from Italy's The Foreshadowing, who recreate one of Sting's first solo compositions in a doom metal framework, taken from their latest LP, Oionos.

A pair of brand new arrivals help to fly the post-punk flag on this episode. Philadelphia's Night Sins give us a taste of their Sisters-soaked New Grave EP (available for free here), and Dreams In Hell show us the harder edge of dark punk with a track from their Chiroptophobia release, which the band has made available for free right here. Incidentally, they list their home town as 'Cicncylvania,' which won me over right away. Additionally, it seems that they're doing some shows this Fall with Calabrese, who also have a new track featured on this show.

Continuing on the heavier side of the post-punk fence, you'll hear further new songs from Finland's Beastmilk, taken from their Use Your Deluge EP, and from Portland's Atriarch, who are about to release a new full-length on Profound Lore Records (coming soon!). To keep your appetite whet for their infectious deathrock/apocalyptic-metal hybrid, this episode features "Offerings," their second track from their recent split release with Alaric. If you loved their song "Oblivion" on the Compilation for the Dead 2012 like I did, you'll want more, and now you'll get more.

For the industrial fans, this Fall's release schedule is shaping up nicely. You'll hear tracks from the brand new Velvet Acid Christ CD, Maldire, which has birthed a video already (see it here) that follows the album's theme of retribution for history's persecution of those who were believed to practice witchcraft. You'll also hear an advance cut from The Ludovico Technique's much-anticipated forthcoming album Some Things Are Beyond Therapy. The single "Wired for Destruction" is available as a free teaser right here. If you like it, share it to help them spread the word.

Also on the show: Another taste of The Cruxshadows latest, As the Dark Against My Halo; some experimental work from Miss Mousie & the Rigamarole, which features Valerie Meiss (of Hellblinki fame); and an excerpt from the new Agalloch EP, Faustian Echoes, which is comprised of a single track, making it the band's longest song to date.

All that, PLUS: A spotlight on this weekend's "Phantasm" cast reunion in Chattanooga (more info here); never before aired tracks from Brighter Fires and ROME; soundtrack work from Marco Beltrami's "The Woman In Black" and Imran Ahmad's "The Dead;" and several visits to vaults for some classicks to round the episode out.
