Welcome to the August 2014 Episode of "Out ov the Coffin." Before we get into what you will be hearing this time, I'd like to mention that, despite the now-monthly format of this show, there will be a bonus episode in the next few weeks: The annual "Road to Dragon Con" Special, which I've decided to treat as a separate show, rather than have it stand as the August episode. Look for that soon...
This episode formally begins with Pinkish Black's contribution to the new tribute album, The Cvlt Nation Sessions: Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures, for which the noted music and culture blog CVLT Nation has gathered a roster of current post-punk bands to each cover one of the classic tracks from Joy Division's now-iconic first full-length album. Want to hear the rest? You can grab it for free right here.
From there, the show moves into the world premiere of the new band Gild the Mourn, featuring Angel and Gopal Metro, the latter of which you should remember as a founding member of the bands Bella Morte and Brighter Fires. The duo have emerged with an ethereal darkwave sound befitting Gopal's other musical endeavours, but brought into new territory via Angel's vocals.
After a pair of '80s classics, we move to a pair of new post-punk/dark indie entries that seem to be cut from similar cloth. First up is a further track from Principe Valiente's Choirs of Blessed Youth, followed by an advance single from New York City's own Interpol, who will be returning with their 5th album, El Pintor, this fall. Close on their heels is a further cut from the new Peter Murphy album, Lion.
In the next set, we start with a brand new track from Oakland's Crimson Scarlet, taken from their new Athens Cave Sessions EP (you can name your price for it here), followed by the pleasantly New Order-esque demo track, "The Fool," from the new Texas band Captive (name your price for that one here). And, towards the end of the set, you'll get a second taste of Australia's Nervous Trend, from their 2013 demo.
In the darkwave/electro segment of the show, you'll hear a selection from the new Diary of Dreams album, Elegies in Darkness (sample it here), followed by the brand new single from Nashville's own "complextro" export, Cryogen Second. Their forthcoming Rust and Remain EP sees the band going further into their dream metal soundscapes, backed with some interesting remixes by several noteworthy acts. It can be pre-ordered and previewed here.
The dark metal portion of the show features a selection by Chasse-Galerie from the new four-way split from Sepulchral Recordings, Légendes, which sees each act paying tribute to Québec's regional dark mythology. More info and details here. Also in the spotlight: the new 20th Anniversary edition of the groundbreaking Emperor classic, In the Nightside Eclipse. The show then winds down with a further selection from Alraune's The Process of Self-Immolation, and the new advance single from Electric Wizard's forthcoming Time to Die.
All of that, plus: Another taste of the new Disemballerina album, Undertaker; Two horror soundtrack classics that have recently been re-issued on vinyl: "City of the Living Dead" (Death Waltz Recording Co.) and "Chopping Mall" (Waxwork Records); Selections from the goth, deathrock, local, and post-punk vaults; and much more...
