EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:
This month's episode begins at the hot, sweaty crack of summer, but looks back (or forth, depending on your perspective) at a more pleasant time, by way of new music from Minneapolis band Autumn, who have returned from a long break with their first new album in almost 20 years, Chandelier. Fans of the band's late-'90s output will not be disappointed, as the William Faith-produced new album picks up where the band left off at the turn of the century. The band will also mount a US tour this fall, so watch for those dates.
Having played one of his earlier works on the last show, set two kicks off with new music from Eric Vain, who seems ever-able to pen dark, varied, catchy-yet-goth-friendly songs, as evident on the new EP, Pedestals for the Broken. We then hear our first taste of Louisville super-group Fotocrime's anticipated full-length, Principle of Pain, which continues to develop and expand the band's newfound goth/darkwave sound. A deeper cut from Soft Kill's new Savior LP comes next, and from the looks of it, one of America's hardest-working post-punk/coldwave acts might even have another new album out by the end of this year(!), already.

A look back at the short-lived, but not forgotten, output of Brighter Fires (featuring the original line-up of Bella Morte) comes next, followed by a raw and challenging new track from ROME's latest, Hall of Thatch. A band that I will sadly miss on tour (again) has the honors of both closing this set and backing the next talk break: Atlanta's Algiers, who has such a wide variety of cool influences and innovative combinations that the band could really take its pick of bills to join and events to play, while impressing everybody in attendance with how powerful they are, regardless -- or perhaps in spite of -- typical genre limitations.
Finland's Silent Scream leads the second set with a track from their 2010 debut album of brash deathrock/post-punk, followed by an even deeper dive into the vaults for some obscure mid '90s gothic rock, courtesy of Witching Hour. Minnesota's Grave Society then returns with a deeper track from their new matte-black goth rock EP, Act I: Dictum Nyctophilia, before we revisit Altar de Fey's modern deathrock classic Echoes in the Corridor. A pair of early-'80s classics from Sex Gang Children and Ultravox round out the set. Ultravox's Ultra-vocalist Midge Ure, as mentioned in the show, is currently on tour in Europe and the US.
Set three begins with a debut from Chicago's Panic Priest, with the very catchy lead track from their self-titled new release on Negative Gain Productions. Another brand new remix from The Cure's Torn Down follows, leading into a pair of tracks from just a few years ago that I wanted to turn back and feature again: First from She Past Away, who is played quite often in clubs (like the upcoming 5th Anniversary of Fascination Street here in Nashville), if not on radio, and second, All Your Sisters, whose 2014 title track, "Modern Failures," is an underrated darkwave gem. Brand new harsh industrial from Cardinal Noire's new Deluge album comes next, followed by another revisited classic from Seraphim Shock.
Tribulation leads the dark metal portion of the show this time, with another track deeper into their new Down Below album. Next, the French-Canadian black metal scene triumphs again with the latest from Délétère, followed by a second taste of the new Primordial album, Exile Amongst the Ruins. I then throw the spotlight on Oakland's Void Omnia and Seattle's Isenordal, who are currently on tour together in support of their new split release of blistering black metal, funereal doom, and dark folk. The tour arrives in Nashville on July 5th, presented by some weird radio show called "Out ov the Coffin." Wonder who that is...
All of that PLUS: Fresh synthwave from Acid Vatican (a collaborative project of Antoni Maiovvi & Vercetti Technicolor) taken from their new Never Forget How to Bear album; Selections from the vault of cult dark movie scores; News, tour dates, and more!
