EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This month, we begin by again paying tribute to the memory of an artist we have lost. Two of them this time, sadly. First, we open the show with a pair of -- and there really isn't a better way to describe them -- beautiful, haunting pieces brought to life by the voice of Julee Cruise, who died earlier this month, finally crossing into the ether from which she seemed to have come. Truly, any band or performer that made what might be called dreamy or ethereal music in the last 30 years owes a debt to her approach, most notably with composer Angelo Badalamenti for the soundtrack music that helped "Twin Peaks" develop its incredible atmosphere and cult following. Rest in peace, Julee.

 

Julee Cruise (December 1, 1956 – June 9, 2022)

On the way out of that introductory tribute, we move to honor the memory of the recently departed Vangelis, composer of the music for one of the most iconic science fiction movies of all time, and one that holds a sacred place to many in the goth/industrial scene, "Blade Runner." Coincidentally, the movie was released 40 years ago this month, so some samples and music from the film were in order for multiple reasons this time.

Vangelis  (29 March 1943 – 17 May 2022)

The first full set begins with new music from Athens, Georgia deathrock/goth-punk band Tears for the Dying. As mentioned in the break, the video for their new single, "Wouldn't It Be Funny," was directed by Blake Pipes, a photographer out of Georgia who has done some great work for Fascination Street in Nashville (including when TftD played there), so I feel a personal connection to seeing these two work together. Beyond that, we dive into brand new music from October Burns Black (feat. James Tramel of The Wake), who have turned in another solid collection of traditional gothic rock on Two Worlds Collide. And from there, we go a track deeper into Dark Star, the new EP from Portland's Nyx Division. We then pull a Nosferatu classic from the vaults to keep the goth rock train rolling...

Set one then continues with our first tour spotlight of the night: Vision Video! Yes, Goth Dad and company are kicking off their summer 2022 tour in Nashville this Thursday night, June 30th at The East Room, then taking a series of stages across the US. In honor of that, you get the new studio recording of VV's cover of The Cure classic, "Pictures of You," and a deeper cut from the excellent Secret Shame before that, because they're playing a number of those shows together! Set two begins with the night's second tour spotlight: STONEBURNER. I feel like I need to put that in all-caps because the wolf graphic that's splattered across their posters simply demands it, RIGHT? Anyway, Stoneburner (feat. Steven Archer of Ego Likeness in a more hellbent industrial mode) has just begun a tour of the US as well, along with Chant (and Bellhead opening their Nashville stop on July 20th at The East Room). I'm a weirdo, of corpse, so I chose a Pink Floyd cover that they released this year to spotlight the tour, but prepare yourselves for something far more aggressive when you get to the shows. After that, set two's tour spotlight transitions to a spotlight on Ukraine, bridging the two with a new benefit single from Johnathan Christian (Ft The Legion Of Whom) -- a collaboration bewteen members of NOIR, Stoneburner, The Last Dance, Attrition, Leæther Strip, and more. All proceeds benefit the Come Back Alive Foundation, a Ukrainian non-governmental organization that emerged to help Ukraine fight against the Russian invaders. Keeping that spirit going, we follow with new music from three Ukrainian bands. First, a song from The Glass Beads' new somber-wave album Time After Time. I just made up that term, I suppose, but it fits. We then dive a song deeper into the latest from Gentle Ropes, before forming this month's Ukrainian Trident with a 2021 release that just made it to my attention from the band Signals Feed the Void.

 

Set three switches focus to plumping up your summer playlists with some new energy, leaning towards harder edged goth-adjacent styles. What better way to start than with a brand new single from the brothers CALABRESE!? Despite the sad announcement that Jimmy Calabrese (founding bassist/vocalist, and real-life brother) would be retiring following this release, we do still have the new Death Cult EP to keep our spirits up. Speaking of keeping spirits up, the Calabrese track is preceded and followed by music/samples from the cult 1972 film "Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things," in honor of its 50th anniversary this month. If you haven't watched that one yet, set aside a night for one of the best scripts in zombie horror/comedy. 

From there, set three continues with a pair of new entries, in the form of stand-alone singles -- first from Washington state's Cruel Velvet, and then from Spanish deathrockers Mausoleo. We then shift gears to mark the 50th anniversary of David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars by playing -- wait, what? -- the Bauhaus version of the would-be title track? Stay with me, though, because this year also marks the 40th anniversary of that single, and (sue me), as great as the Bowie classic is, I reach for the Bauhaus version more often. We then close the set with two more brand new entries -- first a single from Australian act Sea Lungs, then a selection from Atlanta band Dead Register's new album, Alive. 

Set four begins dark metal portion of the show, so get out while you can if you're allergic, or else you'll be exposed to new music from Finland's I Am the Night, who evoke the classic sounds of bands like Emperor and Dissection on their new album While the Gods Are Sleeping. After that, we straddle Finland and Germany at once for a new one from Order of Nosferat, taken from their Nachtmusik album, before diving into a classic from cult Polish goth metal band, Sirrah. We then round the set out with deeper cuts from two 2021 releases that I thought deserved another look; Ulvik's Cascades and Abysmal Grief's Funeral Cult of Personality. Then, closing out the show as a whole for this month, the Australian funeral doom legends Mournful Congregation, with the opening song from their new release The Exuviae of Gods - Part 1.
