EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:
From there, we launch into a slate of new music this month, beginning the first full set with the new single from Georgia's own Tears for the Dying. "Kaiju" sees the band's sound continuing in the direction of their last single, "Wouldn't It Be Funny," which is great news for me, as that was my favorite of theirs so far. I then dip back to last year for an overlooked example of putting some great (and lesser-represented) '90s goth influences to use, the latest single from Utah act Cemetery Siren. Weaving notes of London After Midnight, Switchblade Symphony, and Cinema Strange together, it was going to be difficult to churn out something I didn't like, so "yes" to more of this! We then get our first taste of Ritual Howls' forthcoming LP, Virtue Falters, which shows the band somehow managing to retain that signature feel of an ominous western ghost haunting an abandoned steel mill. Meanwhile, many miles away in some forgotten underground crypt, we catch a different kind of reluctantly-undead vibe from a Mute Angst Envy track taken from their vault-classic 1991 release, Archetype.
The second half of set 1 turns to anniversaries and memorials, beginning with two personal favorite Joy Division tracks to mark today's anniversary of Ian Curtis' suicide on May 18th, 1980. It's hard to fathom that a man whose figure still looms so large over goth and post-punk music was only ever 23 years old. We then close the set with a 40th anniversary selection from The Sisters of Mercy's classic The Reptile House EP, before getting silly with an 8-bit cover version of the same song in the subsequent talk break.
Set two begins with new music from The Bellwether Syndicate's long-awaited full length, Vestige & Vigil, which has finally been released in its full glory -- and it is solid! I expected good things, but I am impressed by their continued innovation. We then round back to 2022 again to highlight some overlooked Greek post-punk from Cinemascope, who finally caught my attention earlier this year. If you were looking for something new in the realms of dark punk or deathrock, Chile's Dalias is up next with a track from their debut EP Heridas. And while we're on the topic of things overlooked in the recent past, we visit the Isle of Man for the first time on the show, for a song from Slow Decay's 2019 EP, Pre-Dawn Light. I figure I can't be the only one who missed them until now, right? After that, we return to the new music with tracks from Vazum's newly-re-recorded collection, V, followed by a song from Ariel Maniki & the Black Haloes' new album, Fractals, and a debut from Italy's The Doormen.
Set three begins with the first of this episode's Ukrainian Trident acts, Gentle Ropes, taken from their new and more electronic-leaning EP, Wounds. A recent darkwave entry from Germany's Glaring slides in next, giving way to something from the unexpectedly-good new Depeche Mode album, Memento Mori. Back to Ukraine again, we then catch up with Djozers (Джозерс), who have more recent material, but I thought I'd start near the beginning with them on this episode and work my way forward. From there, we slip into some new French dark-electro from Sad Madona, before easing into the dark waters of Kælan Mikla's "Sírenur," simply because I finally got to see them live recently and wanted to put a little of that energy into this show, too. We then close the set with some actual Madonna, as covered by longstanding US band and all-around good people, Ego Likeness, who decided to release their version of the BEST Madonna song (fight me), "Live to Tell."
Plunging directly into the cold of the dark metal portion of the show in set 4, we begin with a late-2022 release that's just getting its due here: Purge of the Night Cloak from the Polish-American-Finnish collective, Adaestuo, before exploring the Tolkien realms with new atmospheric Swedish black metal from Morcaint's new Elessar EP. From there, we delve deeper into French black metal act Diablation's Par Le Feu album, before stopping in Romania again for another selection from the Subspecies soundtrack. Finally, we close the set with music from US act Sever's new LP, At Midnight, By Torch Light, then close the full show with a 25th anniversary selection from Cradle of Filth's high-concept landmark 1998 album, Cruelty and the Beast.
All of that PLUS: New dark ambient from Ukraine's Stratim and further instrumental work from Frequent Lycia collaborator David Galas; A 40th anniversary nod the cult horror classic "Mausoleum"; and more!
