***Mixcloud streaming has been restored, so stream away!***

GOOD EVENING... you have arrived just in time for The 2018 "Out ov the Coffin" Halloween Special! Hold out your bags and prepare to receive over 3 hours of Halloween-obsessed sonic tricks and treats. In addition to full-size songs from the most ghoulish realms of goth, post-punk, deathrock, horror punk, darkwave, industrial, and dark metal, you'll find hundreds of fun-sized clips from the crypts: Movie dialogue, sound effects, trailers, radio spots, tv ads, and, of corpse, horror film and television soundtracks, all assembled in ritual formation, and (g)hosted by yours truly.

In addition to traditional Hallowed Hymns, I have unearthed some new arrivals for this year's special, including recently deceased entries from
Grave Society, The Dirty Horror, Ritual Howls, Nox Novacula, Draconian Incubus,The Spiritual Bat, Sargeist, and fresh soundtrack work from "The Haunting of Hill House" and John Carpenter's new "Halloween" soundtrack for 2018.

While this show was coming together, James Karen, who played one of my favorite roles in my favorite film of all, "The Return of the Living Dead" (1985), passed away at the age of 94. To honor his memory, I paid several tributes to him and his iconic role as Frank throughout this episode.

R.I.P. James Karen (1924-2018)

And with that, I send you into the night eternal. May this show improve your Halloween season -- and if so, please share it on your social platform of choice!

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

The 2016 "Out ov the Coffin" Halloween Special is here! RUN AND HIDE! Or, pull up a grave and take in over 3 hours of aural tricks and treats, including howliday-themed deathrock, goth, post-punk, darkwave, and dark metal songs, movie trailers, dialogue samples, soundtrack music, creepy effects, and more, all (g)hosted by yours truly.

This year's show digs a bit deeper for songs not usually unearthed, to be prematurely-buried alongside some of the essential 'Coffin classics. As always, there are a few recently deceased anthems, too, from the likes of
S U R V I V EAltar de Fey, The Bellicose Minds, and more. To keep the frights rolling, this episode is divided into 3 main sets. The first concentrates on goth, post-punk, darkwave, and deathrock; the second on horror punk, horror rock, and even more deathrock (because Halloween); and the third is a special '90s-black-metal-themed set, temporarily bringing back to life some of the glory days of the show, with a few related tracks from outside of the second wave thrown in for flavor.

While this show was being assembled, I received news of the passing of iconic horror host John Zacherle (aka Zacherley, The Cool Ghoul), so I allowed him the first and last words of this episode, as a small tribute.

R.I.P. John Zacherle (1918-2016)

I'd have to say that the biggest music news of the week has been the announcement of a US tour from the legendary Dead Can Dance. I'm most excited, of course, about their Nashville date (September 4th @ The Ryman), but you can see all of the dates here. While you're there, you can download a free copy of the newly released Live Happenings: Part IV, a selection from which is featured on this episode.

This episode opens with a debut from the Austrian band Cold Flesh Colony. Their sound is an unusual mix of post-punk bass-lines, industrial beats, and near-black-metal vocal delivery. Their new album is entitled The Dark Passenger, and it is available as a free or a pay download here.

Out of Texas, you'll hear brand new music from the band Ending the Vicious Cycle, whose love for old-school gothic rock would be hard to mask. Their single is called 1,000 Words, and you can learn more about that one here.

From the Metropolis Records camp, you'll hear from two new releases: The more rock-infused, old-school industrial sound of Inure, from their new album The Offering; then, a remix from the new EP by Everything Goes Cold, who have kept things on their own EBM/Industrial terms with The Tyrant Sun.

Also new to the show this week: A closer look at
Painthings, from Poland's Deathcamp Project; new dark ambient sounds from Pennsylvania's Deorsum Fluens; and the latest single (and video) from Alcest, in honor of their tour hitting this part of the US this week.

All that, plus: More Italian-Horror-music-worship with the likes of Sweden's Anima Morte, among others; an older version of Light Asylum's new single to whet your appetite for their soon-to-be-released new album; a stack of current and classic deathrock; a journey into early '90s dark death metal; and more.

This episode brings new music from Naiades, the brand new album/art collection from Monica Richards. You should recognize her name and art style from her work with Faith and the Muse. The new release is available as a book/CD combo HERE.

Finally making it to the show this time around is the single "Take Forever," which is a collaboration between Irish electronic act The Japanese Popstars (your guess is as good as mine) and Robert Smith (of The Cure). It did, in fact,"take forever" for me to get this one on the show, but it's well worth the wait.

The release of the debut full-length from one of the greatest doom bands in the US, Pallbearer, is finally here. Sorrow & Extinction, released by Profound Lore Records, will no doubt top many year-end lists for 2012 -- but before then, opportunities to catch their live show are stacking up. Dates in New York and Texas have just been announced, and this weekend will bring a pair of official CD release shows, first in their home state of Arkansas (details HERE), then Saturday night in Nashville (details HERE). Both shows will also feature Loss on the bill.

Speaking of Nashville's music scene: This episode's local spotlight is thrown on the debut EP from a newly-transplanted industrial act that now calls Nashville home: Frontal Boundary. You can check out the sounds of "Electronic Warfare" HERE.

New sounds from the forthcoming Locrian & Mamiffer dark noise collaboration will also filter in, alongside tracks from the latest releases by The Beauty of Gemina and The Frozen Autumn. We'll also peel back another layer of Alcest's latest, Les Voyages De L'âme. All that, plus: A rare home studio demo from Corpus Delicti, a seldom-heard US-darkwave collaboration, a pair of listener requests, a gushing live-show review, cool new-release announcements, and loads of current and classic dark music.

This week's show begins with another new live track from Dead Can Dance, who have just released Part III in their free, online series, Live Happenings. The series is designed to whet fans' appetites for their forthcoming new album and tour. To learn more, or grab these EPs for yourself, click HERE.

Brand new to the show this week is Bulgarian band Voyvoda, whose atypical sound combines elements of Balkan folk music and Eastern Orthodox chants with cold wave and post-punk influences. Their new album is called Изток (Iztok), and you can stream it HERE.

Also appearing for the first time on this episode are Italy's Chemical Waves, whose new single "The Origin" can be streamed HERE. It's an unusual piece of post-punk experimentation, chronicling a journey through the history of mankind's cruelty unto itself, through an act like a holocaust.

Other new entries include: A remix from the latest Aesthetic Perfection single, Inhuman; a deeper look into one of the three new albums from ROME; a second look at the new EP from Puerto Rico's The Dead Souls, and two more new dark ambient tracks from Norway's Plague Machinery and Psychomanteum (USA).

The regional concert spotlight for this episode is thrown on two acts that will be hitting the greater TN/AL area in the next week: Zola Jesus, who will be playing in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, February 11th; and VNV Nation, who will play Nashville's Exit/In on February 15th. On a side note, you will catch me at both of these shows. For the VNV Nation show, I will be DJing (along with DJ Jimmy) before and between the bands.

Also on this episode: Songs from the vaults, in the form of rescued deathrock classics, sadly forgotten regional music, and a war-torn lullaby from one of the most contentious plots of land in world history. That, and plenty of other current and classic dark music upon which to feast your ears.

PODCAST: January 26th, 2012

[DOWNLOAD this episode (128k mp3)]

Following the take-down of Megaupload last week, the links for all 2011 episodes are currently broken, BUT there will soon be a new way of downloading past and present episodes of "Out ov the Coffin." Expect a post about that as soon as the details are hammered out. In the meantime, this episode (as well the last one) have been uploaded to Mediafire.

Among the new releases featured on the show this time, you'll find Puerto Rico's The Dead Souls, who play a brand of post-punk reminiscent of bands like The Chameleons. Their new EP Ambition is currently available as a free download on their Bandcamp site.

Returning with their first album since 2005, Italy's The Frozen Autumn emerge with Chirality -- a scientific term that describes an object or being that is not identical to its mirror image. If applied to their sound, it could make a statement about the '80s new wave and synth-pop influences they wear proudly, but do not merely imitate.

You'll also hear further new tracks from: Iscariot Blues, the latest album from Switzerland's The Beauty of Gemina; Icon:Koru, the new industrial set from Germany's [:SITD:]; and two more selections from the Kalpamantra label's Saur Maas compilation, in the form of songs by Unknown Vistae and Canadian experimental artist, Aidan Baker.

At the end of the show, you'll hear a taste of the latest from France's Alcest, who have just released their 3rd full-length of shoe-gazing black metal, entitled
Les Voyages De L'âme. Believe it or not, the band will be touring the US this spring, and even hitting the Southeastern United States. You can see their tour dates here.

Rounding out this episode: More new music from Haujobb's New World March, Live, alternate takes from The Cure and The Chameleons, revisited masters from Mentallo & the Fixer and Arcturus, obscurities rescued from the vinyl mines, and a spotlight thrown on the latest single from New York's Light Asylum, who just released this excellent video.

PODCAST: December 22nd, 2011 - The Xmas Bonus!

[DOWNLOAD this episode (128k mp3)]

Normally, there would not have been an episode this week, but as I recalled last year's "Out ov the Coffin 39 and 1/2 foot Xmas Special," and how much fun that was, it seemed a shame to let it fall into obscurity; however, I didn't want to upload a pure re-run. So, I took that show, chopped it up, kept the best parts, added some new ones, and reworked the whole thing as a new special for this year: "The Out ov the Coffin Xmas Bonus 2011!"

Now, for those that have never heard an "Out ov the Coffin" Xmas Special, I should warn you that this is not at all a typical episode. In fact, it's a complete oddball, framing the Christmas season in a mixture of holiday horror, warped nostalgia, and absolute silliness. It's still done from a goth perspective, of corpse, but this would be the episode in which my sense of humor does most of the driving, and the references become a bit... abstract. What can I say? Christmas is for children, so I'm going to act like one, haha. Having said that: You have been warned...

Featured on this bonus podcast, you will hear a brand new Christmas song from The Cruxshadows, who provide two of the only serious moments in the whole show. Their brand new, 2011 Christmas single, "Anmi's Christmas (Red, Green, Silver & Gold)," is available as a free, or pay-what-you-feel, download right here, along with last year's faithful version of "O Holy Night," both of which are featured on this episode.

And, appearing online just in the St. Nick of time to be included on this podcast, is the new Venture Bros. holiday single. This time, Doc and Jackson present us with their rendition of the classic "Baby, It's Cold Outside," filtered through the characters of The Mighty Monarch and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch. The result is called "Baby It's Cold In Here," and I think it's my favorite holiday song since 2008's "Wonderful Christmastime." The download is available right here. You can also grab the rest of their free Christmas singles (going all the way back to 2004) right here.

Also featured on this show: Loads of warped Christmas classics, from such disparate sources as Oscar the Grouch, King Diamond, Batman, Voltaire, The Grinch, The Ramones, The Cryptkeeper, Count von Count, and many, many more. It's a strange one, folks -- and unlike previous holiday specials, it's UNCENSORED, too! So, put a little something extra in your eggnog, and check out what SantaBod brought you this year...

Not into this episode's theme? No problem. STAY TUNED: The December 29th episode will feature "The Best ov 2011," a cross-section of songs from the best releases to have been featured on the show this year!
