The 2016 "Out ov the Coffin" Halloween Special is here! RUN AND HIDE! Or, pull up a grave and take in over 3 hours of aural tricks and treats, including howliday-themed deathrock, goth, post-punk, darkwave, and dark metal songs, movie trailers, dialogue samples, soundtrack music, creepy effects, and more, all (g)hosted by yours truly.

This year's show digs a bit deeper for songs not usually unearthed, to be prematurely-buried alongside some of the essential 'Coffin classics. As always, there are a few recently deceased anthems, too, from the likes of S U R V I V E, Altar de Fey, The Bellicose Minds, and more. To keep the frights rolling, this episode is divided into 3 main sets. The first concentrates on goth, post-punk, darkwave, and deathrock; the second on horror punk, horror rock, and even more deathrock (because Halloween); and the third is a special '90s-black-metal-themed set, temporarily bringing back to life some of the glory days of the show, with a few related tracks from outside of the second wave thrown in for flavor.

While this show was being assembled, I received news of the passing of iconic horror host John Zacherle (aka Zacherley, The Cool Ghoul), so I allowed him the first and last words of this episode, as a small tribute.

It feels as though it's been longer than a month since the last full episode, but travel, and all the good that it can bring, will do that to you. It is finally autumn, and it's good to be back. This episode begins with a small salute to the 30th anniversary of The Chameleons' classic album, Strange Times, before turning its attention to the pile of new music that has amassed since last we spoke...

First up in the realm of new music is Garden of Mary from Dallas, Texas, with a somber selection from their EP, The Agony In Memory. After that, we move to new music from another act celebrating 30 years right now, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, with the lead single from their new album, These Fleeting Moments, which sees the band reunited with original vocalist Oscar Herrera. After a couple of selections from the goth vaults, and one request, we slide into a new song from ROME's latest, The Hyperion Machine, which some have called the project's most rock-based album to date -- to that, I say: Seek out Jerome Reuter's old band, Mack Murphy & the Inmates, and you'll see how his roots make sense of it all. Finally, the set rounds out with a deeper selection from the the Rendez-Vous album, Distance.

The second full set begins with brand mew music from Detroit's acclaimed Ritual Howls, whose new album Into the Water was released into the wild just before my mad travels began. We then go one (great) track deeper into the latest album from All Your Sisters, before stepping things up further with some catchy new goth-punk from Australia's Death Church. Next up is a new song from New York's Pawns, taken from their recent split EP with Chicago's Cemetery. After a visit to the Japanese deathrock vaults with The Execute, we get a further taste of fresh post-punk from Portland's Spirit Host, before topping the set off with a Cocteau Twins classic.

The third set begins with new music from Italy's Der Himmel Über Berlin, who came to my attention via a compilation from Venus Aeon Recordings entitled Vampyre. We then take a retro-flight with A Flock of Seagulls to continue the good fight against anyone who considers them a one-song band (shame on you). Our heroes in Ego Likeness sneak in just behind, with one of my recent favorites, "-geist," which has resurfaced on their new The Compass EPs collection. The 2-disc set gathers their out-of-print North, South, East, and West EPs, just in time to back the the band's forthcoming tour dates.

The set continues with new music from Nashville's own HR_Lexy, whose new album Slave to the Light will see said light next month. Following that, what I believe is the first band from Liechtenstein to ever appear on Out ov the Coffin, Evren Svren, gives you a taste his new album, Yolun Sonundaki Sahte Işık. Denver's Tollund Men, round out this fairly varied darkwave set with a deeper cut from their new Autoerotik cassette.

The final set turns its attention, as I have in recent weeks, to my mid-'90s dive into the realms of black metal, pulling out several certified classics from various shades of that spectrum. Not to be stuck in the past, though, the set begins with brand new music from Ukraine's Drudkh, taken from their new split (with Grift), entitled Betrayed By The Sun/Hägringar. Finally, the show closes with on a related note, with something from the romantic doom era (fight me), as momentarily made proud by my semi-annual nostalgia-targets, Celestial Season.

BONUS PODCAST: Compilation for the Dead 2016

This special bonus episode (not to be confused with the regular September episode, which will arrive next week) is the podcast version of the Out ov the Coffin: Compilation for the Dead 2016. What's that? Well, the "Compilation for the Dead" is actually a mixtape-style version of the podcast, so the snake is eating its tail here.

I started the "Compilation for the Dead" series back in 2007, after attending Dragon Con for a couple of years, where I would consistently have conversations about the state of "goth" music, its relative health, and if there were any good bands these days. My answer to the last question was always an emphatic "yes!," but in order to put my money where my mouth was, I decided to make it a physical reality that I could just hand to people as proof.

"I made you a mixtape...." See? Not creepy at all!

So, each year (this one being the 10th, so it's ~special~), I choose just under 80 minutes of new and current music to represent my podcast, my DJing style, and, most importantly, the current state of the goth & dark music scene as I see it. I then hand-craft 100 physical copies, and give the mix away to people that come to the goth-related panels that I moderate*. Once that's done, I upload the mix as a podcast, so everyone else can hear it, too.

For those who just found out about "Out ov the Coffin" at Dragon Con this year, I welcome you aboard. This is a special recap episode, so maybe you've heard it all, but the next regular (monthly), brand new episode will launch next week, featuring even more great new music -- alongside classics from the vault, and other current dark sounds from the realms of post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, goth, industrial, film scores, dark metal, and more.

The Xymox Fest 2016 / Dragon Con 2016 Special Edition!

This episode has not one, but two themes -- although most people would not immediately notice that without such a declaration, which helps it work on a third level. The first of those themes is a focus on this week's mini-tour from Clan of Xymox, who will be playing a very limited string of dates in Portland (twice!), then Oakland and Los Angeles. I'll be attending the Portland shows, so this episode starts with a spotlight on the line-up for those dates (August 25th and 26th), which have turned into a who's-who of current post-punk and darkwave bands that I like to call Xymox Fest 2016. 

The show opens with a then-and-now segment from festival headliners, stars, and goth/darwave icons, Clan of Xymox. We start with a track from their classic Medusa album, which turns a ripe 30 years old later this year, then slide gracefully into something from their latest full-length, 2014's Matters of Mind, Body and Soul. The first two talk breaks feature instrumental tracks from Medusa as well, because I can never resist sticking to a theme.

The first full set spotlights the line-up for the August 25th show at the Star Theatre in Portland, beginning with new music from Spain's Belgrado, taken from their Obraz LP, then sliding into some recent music from excellent band and event-organizers themselves, Soft Kill. New music from Arizona's Body of Light comes up next, taken from their widely-loved new album Let Me Go. An recent track from Chicago's Cemetery leads us into more brand new material, this time from Denver's Tollund Men, whose low-fi tape-hiss darkwave has won over many people on their new Autoerotik album. The set wraps up with a track from Utopia, the latest from Vancouver's Spectres, who will also be rounding out the bill on Thursday night. 

The second set focuses on Friday's line-up, beginning with another new track from San Francisco's All Your Sisters, before hitting you with a crowd favorite from the first of five bands from the post-punk-rich waters of Portland itself, The Bellicose Minds. A brand new one from Arctic Flowers comes next, the other half of their split with Infinite Void that you heard on the last episode. Relative newcomers Vice Device make their late 'Coffin debut next, followed by show openers Spirit Host, who give you the b-side of their new single, Full Dark, No Stars / En Masse. Finally, the set concludes with the band who will headline the pre-fest concert on Wednesday night, Warm Hands, a minimal post-punk/darkwave band featuring members of Soft Kill. 

Naturally, with all of the focus on Portland, my mind wandered to other acts from the area that are not part of this fest, but whom I would still love to see. Hence, the third set starts with some heavier material from Atriarch, followed by a curveball from the project known as Curezum -- yes, you guessed it, they play Cure songs in the style of Burzum. Recent gems from Deathcharge, Shadowhouse, and Lunch round out this northwest-centric set.

And now... DRAGON CON 2016! Typically, at this time of year, I would roll out my Road to Dragon Con Special, to get everyone ready for the massive nerd-takeover of Atlanta across Labor Day weekend, but since the schedule for convention this year had not "dropped" at press time, I chose to make the latter part of this episode into a special set that highlights many of the bands, guests, panels, and film/television properties that will be celebrated at Dragon Con 2016 -- especially on the Horror Track, where many of you will see me working this year.

Included in this DC2016 set is recent music from fan-favorites and Con-fixtures Aurelio Voltaire and The Cruxshadows, as well as a brand new track from Unwoman, who puts her own stamp on The Sisters of Mercy classic "More," on her new Uncovered Volume 3 album. All of these songs are, of course, sandwiched in between themes and sounds from shows like Penny Dreadful, Dark Matter, The Venture Bros., Gotham, Bates Motel, and Sleepy Hollow, as well as film series ranging from Harry Potter to Hammer Horror. Sadly, I can't give you a more in-depth look at this year;'s convention offerings, but keep your eyes peeled here for the full Horror Track schedule, and here for news of the full convention schedule. I would also recommend getting the 2016 App. Otherwise, may I see some of you at the convention, or in Portland, and I will return with tales for next month's episode.

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: 

While there is no actual theme to this episode of "Out ov the Coffin," it will be evident that I've spent much of the last week taking in the new synthetic-'80s sci-fi/horror series "Stranger Things," which is an experience that I certainly recommend, for the many reasons you've probably heard at this point. After beginning the show with new music from San Francisco's All Your Sisters, who have just returned with their more refined second album, Uncomfortable Skin, we move into the main theme from "Stranger Things," as composed by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein. The duo also make up part of the synthwave band S U R V I V E, who have recently been signed to Relapse Records.

While still on that 'strange' wavelength, the first full set begins with a well-used classic from Echo & the Bunnymen (who will tour the US later this year), before turning this month's spotlight on the just-announced and quickly-upcoming tour that will see Aurelio Voltaire and Stoneburner (featuring Steven Archer of Ego Likeness) joining forces across the US. I chose a couple of my personal favorites for this set to celebrate their arrival in Nashville on August 6th to play the Solidarity 1.5 benefit show. You can see the rest of their tour dates here.

The set continues with music from the first full-length release from the mysterious parody-band, Death In Rome, who have gained a following online for their unlikely neo-folk covers of catchy pop songs. In this case, the band takes the skeleton of one of ROME's most beloved songs, "Der Brandtaucher," and dresses it with the words and melody of the WHAM classic "Careless Whisper." ROME being one of my favorite bands, I did not take kindly to this idea on paper, but hearing it, I loved it in spite of myself. Hopefully, Rome's Jerome Reuter is able to appreciate it in the same way. Meanwhile, you can hear more surprising Death In Rome curiosities on their new album Hitparade.

Deadfly Ensemble and Cinema Strange main-man Lucas Lanthier drops in next with his new digital single, "Heathen Smile," a song which could fairly be said to sit comfortably between the sounds of the two aforementioned projects. Finally, the set wraps up with a classic from Killing Joke, brought to mind by the release of the film and soundtrack for the new animated feature "Batman: The Killing Joke," which will have a limited theatrical release on July 25th. Not played together merely to be cute, I go into the backstory that actually does connect the classic post-punk band with the greatest comic story ever told. 

The second set begins with new music from Australia's Infinite Void, whose new split 7" with Arctic Flowers has just been released. Following that, you'll get a taste of three new deathrock demos from across the US: L.A.'s The Wraith (featuring members of Lost Tribe and Cinema Strange) lead the charge, followed by Denver's Radio Scarlet, and Texas band Ritual Order. After a classic from Finland's Musta Paraati, the set wraps up with a deeper cut from Litovsk, who continue to fly the French flag high on this podcast.

The third set begins with new music from Bestial Mouths' latest, Heartless, before giving you a deeper cut from that catchy new Bootblacks LP, Veins. After dipping back to the previous decade for a cut from Led Er Est, we catch up with the closing track from High-Functioning Flesh's most recent LP, then segue into the classic Tubeway Army track, "Down in the Park." Lest you should be too comfortable at that point, more great new music from France's Rendez-Vous springs to life, and (hopefully) makes you spring to the web to order a copy of their new LP, Distance. 

In the fourth set, the tables turn to dark metal. If you're allergic to such things, run away now (but do come back for the closing track!). We begin with a black/doom song from the new, self-titled album from Predatory Light, and, because I can't leave well enough alone, I return to "Stranger Things" on the way out of this episode, too, channeling all of the show's "Mirkwood" references into the Summoning classic of the same name, then closing the show with the full-length version of the New Order epic, "Elegia," which was used to great effect in the series.

All of that, PLUS: New soundtrack work from "The Neon Demon" by Cliff Martinez; a visit to the '80s sci-fi/horror soundtrack vaults for some rollerskating vampires and classic lizard-people synth-themes; and more!
