EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: 

This episode begins with music from The Last Dance, a deeper cut from their new Ruins album, which leads softly into score music from the soundtrack to "Ex Machina," a film that has been sadly overshadowed at the box office, but one that will no doubt surface on many end of the year lists. The score music was a collaboration between composer Ben Salisbury and Portishead's Geoff Barrow.

The first full set begins with music from Virginia's Shadow Age, whose new EP Silaluk lives up to all of the modern post-punk/goth promise heard in their demo material. The band hits the road today on a week of dates through the eastern, southern, and mid-United States. See those dates here.

After spending some time in the late '80s and digging into the last decade's vault, The next set begins with brand new music from Denmark's Metro Cult. Their new 7-inch, Transparent, continues to build the band's reputation for infectious, energized post-punk, to which they have added a visual side with the just-released video for the title track. Turkey is not a country from which we often see new dark music, but this episode has given us a solid pair of bands to appreciate. First up is Istanbul's Ugly Shadows, whose sound falls more in modern deathrock/gothpunk territory. Grab their self-titled EP here. After that, you'll get a taste of She Past Away's just-released second album, Narin Yalnizlik, which sees the band continuing to churn out memorable modern post-punk/darkwave. And, no, as big of a punster as I am, I did not intend to make one by following these two Turkish acts with a deeper cut from Ritual Howls' latest album, Turkish Leather -- but it happened anyway, so enjoy it.

After a second taste of the latest Calabrese album, Lust for Sacrilege, we dive fully into darkwave territory with the opening track from the forthcoming Ego Likeness album, When the Wolves Return. The wave continues with another taste of The Soft Moon's new Deeper album, followed by a former obscurity from Ministry's vaults, recently unearthed on their new Trax! Box. After a bit of latter-day Depeche Mode, the set takes a turn for the cinematic with a selection from the M83/Joseph Trapanese score to the dystopian semi-space opera "Oblivion," before closing with brand new music from The Synthetic Dream Foundation, taken from their new EP, The Witch King, 1st Movement.

The dark metal portion of the show begins with a song from A Furrow Cut Short, the new album from Ukrainian folk/black metal band Drudkh, which leads into a classic from Amorphis' Tales from the Thousand Lakes album, which the band will be performing in its entirety this weekend at the Maryland Death Fest, where Ireland's Primordial will also no doubt put on an excellent show. Alas, I'll have to settle for playing something from their latest album in this set.

The dark metal rounds out with a selection from the doom vaults, in the form of The Gault's "Bright White Blind" -- but not before we are decimated by a track from the new Bell Witch album, Four Phantoms. It never ceases to amaze me how much sound and fury can be carried by just two men agonizing over only bass and drums, but they've done it again. Get it here.

All of that, PLUS: Brand new music from Tom Holkenborg's soundtrack to "Mad Max: Fury Road;" Another selection from Disasterpeace's score to "It Follows;" And a closing tribute to Joy Division's Ian Curtis who took his own life 35 years ago this week. May he rest in peace.

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: 

This episode begins by marking two milestones, the first being the imminent presence of Peter Hook & the Light in my hometown next week, where they will be performing both proper Joy Division albums in their entirety, along with a bonus set of New Order material. In honor of this honor, the show opens with their version of "Shadowplay," taken from a 2011 live appearance. See the rest of their dates here.

Following that, we mark two important anniversaries in The Cure's history: The first is, of course, the birthday of Robert Smith (April 21st), on which the first part of this episode was recorded. The second is today's 35th anniversary of the release of the band's sound-defining second album, "Seventeen Seconds." Actually, the springtime is riddled with important anniversaries to Cure fans, so I'll just keep celebrating.

The first full set begins with brand new music from The Last Dance, taken from their just-released Ruins album -- half of which came out in pieces overt the last year or so, but you'll hear one of the fresh tracks, followed by a set of lesser known '90s and late-'80s goth that throws me back to my early days in radio. The next set begins with another infectious track from France's Varsovie, taken from their L'Heure Et La Trajectoire album, which is ever-in-my-stereo lately. Grab it for a limited time as a pay-what-you-will item here. Following that, we'll check out the first demo track from Undertheskin, a new goth/post-punk act from Deathcamp Project vocalist/guitarist, Void.

Portland's Shadowhouse then makes a long-overdue return to the show with material from their latest album, Hand in Hand, an album praised for its gothic romanticism within the current scene of more straightforward post-punk revivalists. We also dig deeper into the new Rule of Thirds album, this time with a more somber track, followed by a second look at The Soft Moon's new Deeper album, which helps to bring a suffocating dark-electronic tone to the end of that set.

Speaking of dark electronics, the next talk break is underscored by a selection by Irving Force, taken from the new Carpenter compilation from Retro Promenade; Not a label to rest on the praise they've received from their recent series of Twin Peaks-inspired synthwave tribute albums, the label is back with a collection of musical reverence to the master of Synthwave/Horror Soundtracks, John Carpenter himself, Check it out here.

Also returning unexpectedly are The Crüxshadows, who surprised fans this week with a brand new single (pay what you will here), on the verge of their latest European tour. In better news for stateside fans, the band has suggested that American dates may be in their future, aside from their traditional appearances at Dragon Con and on several dark boat rides. Rounding out the industrial side of this episode, we delve further into the new album from Cardinal Noire, surrounded by several items from the industrial and darkwave vaults.

One of the greatest musical victories for me in this year (don't you dare laugh) has been finally seeing the much-anticipated release of the score music to the original "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" cartoon series (get it while you still can here). You'll have heard one track in the background of the second talk-break of this episode -- but you'll get another, uninterrupted cut, serving as a set-bridge between hard goth and black metal selections, because it's just that good. Then, as we continue the dark metal portion of the show, you'll get another taste of Winterfylleth's The Divination of Antiquity, followed by new music from Romania's Negură Bunget, taken from their new album, Tău.

All of that, plus:  A look at the re-issued early works of Pittsburgh's horror-obsessed prog-men, Zombi; More fresh synthwave from Espectrostatic's Daemonum EP; A taste of Disasterpeace's much talked-about soundtrack from the new cult horror film, "It Follows;" And a late closing tribute to Rozz Williams, since April could not be allowed to pass without stopping to remember the man's contributions to what we have here.

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

In honor of the 30th Anniversary of The Sisters of Mercy's First and Last and Always album, which first saw the dark of night on March 11th, 1985, this episode begins with its closing track, the sound of which seals a collection of songs that would become a template for traditional gothic rock to this very day. If you haven't revisited the album in a while, there's no time like the present.

Following another taste of the new John Carpenter album, Lost Themes, we dive into a long list of new music for this month's episode, beginning with Germany's Passion Play, who turned in their final recording as a band on the latest Pagan Love Songs compilation. From there, Switzerland's Veil of Light give us a taste of their new album, Ξ. Continuing with the fresh post-punk, Australia's Rule of Thirds are next, with a song from their new self-titled release on Mass Media Records -- the first of two premieres from that label this month. 

Richmond, Virginia's Shadow Age (featuring a member of Lost Tribe) step in next, with a demo from their forthcoming Reign album, followed by a new remix from California's Hyena Motorcade -- and not just any remix, a remix by John Ashton of The Psychedelic Furs, which has to be a great honor. The mix can be found on the new compilation, "For the Bats, Volume II," the proceeds from which go to Tolga Bat Hospital, to benefit bat rescue, rehabilitation and conservation. Get it here. The set concludes with more great new post-punk from Italy's Secret Sight, from their Day.Night.Life album.

The next set begins with a remarkably catchy and infectious number from France's Varsovie, made all the more impressive by the fact that I don't understand a word of it. Their new album is entitled L'Heure Et La Trajectoire, and you can find it here. After a dip in the vaults, we catch up with Denmark's The Foreign Resort, from an overlooked 2014 release, New Frontiers. New deathrock from Finland's Virgin in Veil, featuring members of Masquerade, follows next, leading into new music from the dubiously named texas dark-punk outfit, Slimy Member. And while we're on the punkier side of things, you'll hear a taste of the forthcoming Cemetery album, Wind and Shadow, which you can pre-order here.

The third set goes in several directions, offering new music from the often-shared San Francisco electro-post-punk band, The Soft Moon, from their new Deeper album, followed quickly by the also much-talked about Finnish band, Cardinal Noire. Dubbed by many as the best Skinny Puppy album in years (hah!), Cardinal Noire is a conscious tribute to the classic industrial sounds that had been missing in the scene for years, while not being overly retro. All jokes aside, it's a really good album, which should help restore your faith in current industrial.

After a couple of somber moments, brought you in part by another taste of Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows' latest, Mitternacht, we arrive at a gem from the brand new Calabrese album, Lust for Sacrilege. Often compared to the Misfits in the past, their new album's opening track takes me back to the Danzig III-era, in the best possible way, opening a door to new possibilities for the band's horror rock sound. Those upstanding gents in Pallbearer are also back with a brand new song, to be found on a promotional flexi in the latest issue of Decibel Magazine, in honor of their upcoming tour with At the Gates and Converge. Details here.

Following a third dose of The House of Capricorn's Morning Star Rise album, you'll hear one side of the MMXIV Demo from New Mexico's Predatory Light, a new band featuring one of the members of Ash Borer. The show then draws to a close with subtle grace, receding with the title track from Aelter IV: Love Eternal. Aelter is one of several side-projects to emerge from Wolvserpent, with this project focusing on a western-gothic approach, evoking notes of later Swans, Nick Cave, and Lycia.

This episode was delayed a little bit due to the ice and snow that have covered Nashville's landscape in somber white since last weekend, so it's only natural that it should begin with a set suited for reflection on a desolate, mournful snowscape. The Stooges set the tone on the way in, followed by a set featuring brand new music from The Lost Patrol, taken from their Chasing Shadows album, and a further selection from the new Hot Guts new album, Wilds.

The first set finishes with a song from 20Six Hundred, taken from the (so far) three-volume synth-tribute to the music of "Twin Peaks," The Next Peak, released by Retro Promenade. To give you a further taste of the series' new electronic eye on the Lynch universe, another selection -- this one from Full Eclipse -- is included under the talk break. The second full set begins with a deeper cut into the new ROME album, A Passage to Rhodesia. ROME will finally set foot on American soil again in April. You can find more information on those west coast appearances here. The set then turns to a premiere from the forthcoming Ashton Nyte album, Some Kind Of Satellite. Known best as the man behind South African goth band, The Awakening, Nyte will release his latest solo album in March. Pre-orders are happening here, and you can see the video for the new single here. 

Continuing with the premieres, we visit Portugal for a taste of the new band NU:N, whose Nothing Unveils Nothing can be found here, followed by another brand new digital single from the once-on-hiatus, recently-international goth band, The Last Dance. The great news? There will be a new full-length in April called Ruins. The band is currently offering pre-sales and perks to support the long-hoped-for new album and live shows here.

The world of horror films and soundtracks would simply not be the same without John Carpenter, so it was with great relish that I welcomed his new solo LP into my home this week. In honor of that, the next set begins with two selections from his new Lost Themes collection, which is (unbelievably) his first release designed to stand alone, without films to back the music -- unless you count the films in your head. Either way, it's recommended.

The darkwave continues with a further look at the new All Your Sisters album, Modern Failures, followed by the 5th digital single from the realms of Gild the Mourn. "Greed" sees the duo of Gopal and Angel Metro beginning to carve out a signature sound, reminiscent of the classic '90s gothwave scene in the US. The fusion of post-punk and darkwave continues with another debut, this time from Sweden's Agent Side Grinder, whose Alkimia album will see release in the spring.

Finally, we reach the dark metal portion of the show, with further tastes of the new albums from Agalloch and Primordial, as well as debuts from Germany's Vivus Humare, taken from their album Einkehr, and Canada's anonymous psychedelic black metal outfit, Thantifaxath, whose album made a number of Best of 2014 lists last year. The closing honors for this episode are given to Nashville's own Hadals, who provide another chance to slip into the ether with their track from the Hadals, Japanese Women, Pleasuredome, Pornography & Settlement split on the noted cassette label, Tapes of a Neon God.

In keeping with tradition, this first episode of 2015 takes a long look back at the Best of 2014, taking the form of a sonic time-capsule, in which the musical (and to a lesser extent, the cinematic) highlights of last year will be placed for later reflection.

Like always, the songs selected for this episode have been arranged according to flow and style, rather than any ranking system or order -- and since certain 2013 releases crept in late, I've added a bonus set in the middle to feature those, so as to prevent any great late-comers from falling through the proverbial cracks.

Speaking of late-comers, a few releases are being featured for the first time on this episode, including new San Francisco darkwave act, All Your Sisters, the soundtracks from "Only Lovers Left Alive" and "Under the Skin," and the latest albums from Primordial and Agalloch.

Also: My apologies to Principe Valiente, who made it into the first full set of this episode, but was not identified in the talk break afterwards. They also appear in this year's album cover collage (above), which I should note is not necessarily my top 16 picks, but a good visual representation of some of the standouts that also happened to have nice artwork to include.
