PODCAST: September 7th, 2012 [Compilation for the Dead 2012]

[STREAM this episode (on Mixcloud)]
(or scroll to the bottom to stream it here)

The last episode was all about Dragon*Con, which no doubt left more than a few people feeling a bit left out. So, in lieu of a traditional episode upon my return, I thought I would offer people a chance to hear what they might have missed.

Every year since 2007, I've hand-crafted a limited batch of compilations to give away at the convention, partly to give people a taste of what "Out ov the Coffin" is like -- and, most importantly, to fly the flag for current goth & dark music that people may not be hearing. It's gotten more and more popular each year, which resulted in all available copies being snapped up before the Con was even through its second day.

So, for those that couldn't attend the con -- or for those who just didn't get a copy while supplies lasted -- this podcast encapsulates the contents of the Out ov the Coffin "Compilation for the Dead 2012." It evens features two bands never heard on the show before: Finland's Beastmilk, who turn in a Jim Morrison-soaked take on the heavier end of post-punk, and Portland Oregon's Atriarch, who offer a vital link between classic deathrock and current metal. Plus: Brand new material from Worm Ouroboros, taken from their new release, "Come the Thaw."

For those who just found out about this podcast at Dragon*Con this year, I welcome you aboard. The next brand new episode will launch on Friday, September 21st, featuring loads of new music that I've gathered in my recent travels. In the meantime, if you're new to this show, I encourage you to check out some of the previous episodes (here), and to follow the show on Facebook.
Thanks,
Ichabod

PODCAST: August 24th, 2012: The Road to Dragon*Con Special

[STREAM this episode (on Mixcloud)]
(or scroll to the bottom to stream it here)

Dragon*Con, Dragon*Con, Dragon*Con!!!

This episode is all about Dragon*Con, THE massive Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Comic Book, Horror, Pop-Culture, Film, Television, Music, Art, and everything-else-that's-cool convention that's held in Atlanta, Georgia every Labor Day Weekend (which means it's getting started next week!). They also happen to feature a number of concerts from Darkwave, Industrial, and Goth bands, which is how I was first drawn into the fold back in 2005.

This episode features sounds and songs entirely related-to and inspired-by guests that will be appearing at the convention, fan panels that will be held at the convention, and bands that will be performing live -- including brand new releases from The Cruxshadows and Ego Likeness.

Currently, I serve as the Assistant Track Director for the Horror & Dark Fantasy Track, so there are many references to the panels, guests, and topics we have in our rooms this year (see our full schedule HERE), but my Dragon*Con coverage is not limited to just what we're doing. My interests are varied (scattered?), and this episode goes all over the map of Geekdom, as one might call it: Horror, Comics, Sci-Fi, Cartoons, Dark & Weird Music, etc.

On the playlist below, you will find not only the list of everything played on this podcast, along with links to each artist featured, but you will also find my notes on where to catch each related guest or performer at the convention (in small print below each name) -- because, well, I'm here to help. Of course, you'll want to check the Official Program Guide to make sure of these times, or install one of their many Smartphone Apps (for Android, iPhone, or Other devices).

If this podcast serves its purpose, it will turn you on to some attractions at Dragon*Con that you might not have considered. Failing that, it should at least get you as excited to hurry up and get there as I am right now. So, grab this episode and listen to it on the ride down, or stream it while you're packing up your costumes, and I'll see you at the Con!

NOTE:  This podcast is independently produced, and not officially endorsed by Dragon*Con. 'Nuff said.

Also: If you're wondering what panels I will be moderating this year, here's the list:

  • Friday 1pm: "An Hour with the Cruxshadows" [Embassy A+B]
  • Friday 7pm: "State of the Goth Scene 2012"  [Embassy A+B]
  • Saturday 1pm: "Meet the Bands: Spooky Music" (w/ Voltaire, Calabrese) [Embassy A+B]
  • Saturday 8:30pm: "Hammer Horror"  [Embassy A+B]
  • Sunday 1pm: "David Lynch: Inside the Black Lodge" [Embassy A+B] *(panelist)
  • Sunday 7pm: "Meet the Bands: Darkwave/Industrial" (w/ Die Sektor, I:Scintilla, Ego Likeness) [Embassy C]

NOTE: The Horror & Dark Fantasy Track panels will be in the same rooms this year, but they have new names. What was called 'Montreal Vancouver' is now Embassy A+B, and 'Cairo' is now Embassy C (both in the Hyatt).

Cult Fiction Underground w/ DJ Ichabod: What's Next and What to Expect on August 25th

Coming up this Saturday night (August 25th), for those in the Nashville area, is the third installment of "Cult Fiction Underground with DJ Ichabod." It's a new monthly event that pairs cult films -- from the world of atmospheric horror and exploitation -- with cult music, in the form of goth, deathrock, post-punk, darkwave, and horror soundtracks.

So, for those that love the first hour of "Out ov the Coffin," it's as though I'm broadcasting it live from a dark, '70s underground bar, after we've all just watched a cult horror movie in the adjoining theatre. Sounds like your style? Here's the flyer & a link to the Facebook event page, so you can join the cult, too:

[Facebook Event Page: http://www.facebook.com/events/362066423874342/ ]

This month's event will start with Jess (Jesus) Franco's most celebrated film, "Vampyros Lesbos," a 1971 journey into atmospheric 'vampsloitation,' featuring a soundtrack that took on a life of its own. Here's the trailer [in German & Not safe for work!], to put you in the mood:

To keep things going as soon as the credits roll, you'll be treated to a mix of dark music & horror soundtrack clips, while you hang out with the other like-minded cult fiction fans and have a beer or five. To give you an idea of precisely what type of music will be played, here's what was played last month.

See you in the Undergound!
- Ichabod

This episode begins with new music from Brooklyn, New York's Light Asylum, whose full length debut Light Asylum proves to be another great showcase for singer Shannon Funchess' ever-impressive, deep, powerful, dramatic -- and even operatic -- voice, which takes their '80s-steeped electro/darkwave music into many new dark and danceable arenas.

Speaking of singing to impress: Amidst news of vocalist Jaz Coleman's apparent and confusing disappearance this week, you'll hear music from Killing Joke's new album, MMXII. It's another solid release, loaded with their signature atmosphere, biting lyrical content, and, of course, Jaz's soaring -- and sometimes absolutely serrated -- voice.

Earlier this week, Germany's afmusic offered up a free, 63-track retrospective of the many genres of music they've been releasing up to this point, offering fans of goth, darkwave, post-punk, and many other styles a whole lot of sounds to check out. Three selections are featured on this episode (from Amada, The Foreign Resort, and M!R!M), but you can grab the whole collection right here.

Also featured on this episode: New mid-paced doom/dark metal from Italy's The Foreshadowing, who return this month with a new album entitled Second World; fresh experimentation from Chicago's Locrian, who also return with a new release this month, entitled The Clearing & Final Epoch; and even some newly released live material from Loss, recorded at March's Scion A/V showcase for Profound Lore Records. That whole live compilation (also featuring Pallbearer, Wolvhammer, The Atlas Moth, and Yob) can be downloaded for Free right here.

All of that, plus: New horror-inspired alternate soundtrack music from France's Neon Rain (who seem to have some interesting mixtapes available); a whole set of new and classic material for the goth-punks among us; another musical trip to Nolan's Batcave; and more -- for a total of two and a half hours of current and classic dark music.

Having just returned from a week in California, seeing ROME twice and having a generally great time, this episode is filled with music I picked up in my travels, and stories gathered along the way.

ROME
is the type of band that I was unsure I would ever get to see live, so it was quite a privilege to be able to see them play two nights in a row. The first show, in Riverside California, was held at a very small, DIY venue that served as a bookshop and resource center by day. While this didn't provide much in the way of atmosphere or sound/lighting, it did give the people who made the trek a unique opportunity to meet the band on casual terms.

The following night in Hollywood, ROME shared the stage with Unwoman at Bar Sinister. Other than the thumping dance beats that were bleeding over from the other end of the club, this
was the full-fledged show we'd all waited and traveled long to see. The ROME sets on both nights were filled with songs from across the band's catalogue, one of which is featured on this episode, along with a track from Unwoman, since all of these sounds are still so fresh in my mind.

Also fresh in my mind: "The Dark Knight Rises." I saw it in IMAX when I returned, absolutely loved it, and immediately ran out to buy Hans Zimmer's soundtrack -- a few selections from which can be heard on this episode. I have to hand it to the man for setting new trends in film music with his Batman scores. Great stuff. And if you get the physical CD, it comes with a drop card that gives you access to download some additional songs, too.

On the industrial/ebm side of the fence, this episode features new music from Germany's Heimataerde, taken from their new album Gottgleich; a newly revamped version of one of the earliest songs from South Africa's Acretongue; and a further selection from disKonnekt, the latest album from Canada's Decoded Feedback.

This episode also features a horror rock set that unleashes another new song from Calabrese, alongside a classick from Alice Cooper -- both of whom will be appearing at this year's Dragon*Con in Atlanta, although it is unclear whether Alice will be performing live at the convention, or appearing solely as a guest. Either way, it shall be an honor to have him aboard. In further Dragon*Con news, our friends in Ego Likeness have just been added to the line-up as well.

In addition to all of the above, this episode also features: Additional new entries from Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat and Anhedonist, fresh experimental sounds from LPF12, more great soundtrack work, several obscurities pulled from the vault, and much, much more.

With today being Friday the 13th, I thought this would be a good time to make the shift to labeling each show with Friday's date, instead of the traditional Thursday time-stamp. This makes things more realistic, considering that each new episode is uploaded on a Friday afternoon, after having been recorded on a late Thursday night/early Friday morning.

This episode begins with my excitement over the upcoming U.S. concerts from ROME, who have become one of my all-time favorite bands since their inception in 2005. To date, they have only performed once in the United States, but there will be four shows on our soil next week, all in California (see those dates here). I am fortunate/crazy enough to be flying out to see two of them, myself, so this episode begins with one of my current favorite songs, taken from the recent Die Aesthetik der Herrschaftsfreiheit triple-album collection.

Italy's Christina Plays Viola have issued a new promo EP for 2012, further exhibiting their '80s/'90s goth influences on such tracks as this episode's "Apocryphal Supremacy." You can grab that EP right here. Meanwhile, fellow Italians Chemical Waves have released another new single, The Great Dictator (free download here), which again features two versions of the single/title track, along with a more experimental/instrumental track, which is the one I found myself drawn to this time.

Ukraine's Nightchild A. -- an alternate project from one of the founders of The Nightchild -- emerged this week with a new instrumental EP entitled Images. The project serves as a place for material that doesn't quite fit the main project, having been inspired by such things as the soundtrack to the film 28 Days Later, which I paired them with on this episode. A video has also been created for their featured song "Abandoned Places."

Having just been confirmed to play Dragon*Con 2012, Calabrese return to the show this week with another undeniably catchy horror rock anthem from their brand new Dayglo Necros (you can score your own copy of it right here). For those who are also going to the Con this year, I hope to see you in the crowd when they perform. Ego Likeness returns on this show as well, this time with a dancefloor-filler from their new East EP. You can still order one of the last remaining copies of that one here, if you hurry.

Nebraska's Strap on Halo make their debut on this episode with a new, pre-album single. They will be joining such acts as Entertainment, Ex-VoTo, Lestat, and many more at the Age of Decay festival in Jacksonville, FL on September 22nd of this year. Since not many goth-specific American festivals happen these days, you might consider making the drive for this one. Details here.

More reasons to listen to this episode? Sure: More sounds from the new live Skinny Puppy album; a spotlight on the Nations Collide Tour featuring Nolongerhuman (which will be coming through Nashville for FREE!) next week; plenty of classic goth/deathrock; some shoegaze and neofolk selections; and several gems from the vaults.

For those in Nashville this weekend:  +SALVATION+ Gothic/Industrial Night is happening on Saturday the 14th, and we'll be giving away a pair of tickets to see Dead Can Dance's Nashville show. This edition has been billed our Family Reunion Event, which will feature resident DJ sets from myself, Jimmy, and Assimilat, as well as guest spots from returning +SALVATION+ DJs Nephilim and Reaver. It should be a fun night.

This episode opens with fresh music from Sweden's Brotherhood, whose new album, …Turn the Gold to Chrome…, has just been issued on Germany's afmusic. You can check out more of their post-punk/goth rock sound on their Bandcamp site.

Dead Can Dance have just started taking pre-orders for their much-anticipated first studio album in 16 years, Anastasis. As a gift to their many curious fans, they have released a digital single, which is featured on this episode (and available here). The album will be issued in multiple formats, to coincide with their Fall 2012 tour, which will hit Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on September 4th.

Incidentally, for those in the Nashville area, word on the street is that +SALVATION+ Gothic/Industrial Night will be giving away a pair of tickets to the Dead Can Dance show at their July 14th event. For those keeping tabs on Dragon*Con in Atlanta (Labor Day Weekend), I'll talk about some of the bands that have said they will be playing there this year, including South Carlina's Valentine Wolfe, whose macabre Steampunk ambience is featured on this episode.

Speaking of events, the brand new Calabrese album has finally landed, and it is GOOD. Dayglo Necros is another fine example of the 3 brothers serving up the catchiest and coolest horror rock in the world right now. You can score your own copy of it right here. Act quickly, and you may even be able to sink your fangs into some of the pre-order extras.

Ego Likeness has just issued the 4th volume in their Compass EP series, the long-awaited East. This one clocks in at more of an album's length, but I doubt anyone will complain about that part. The opening track, "-geist," is quite striking, so it is featured it on the way in to this episode's darkwave/ebm/industrial set. The EP is limited to only 300 CDs, but you can still order one of the last remaining copies here, if you hurry.

Also new to the show: A taste of new electro/darkwave from Until the Air Runs Out, the new album from Seattle's Nightmare Fortress; a further cut from Darker Days Tomorrow's new album, False Prophets; more new electro-cabaret from AlterRed's Dollstown album; a remastered and revamped cut from the 2nd installment of Suicide Commando's The Suicide Sessions collection; and more fresh Swedish post-punk from Svarta Hundar, who is featured on The Peter Out Wave compilation. Their track "Mörkt Vatten" has also yielded a video, which can be seen here.

All of that, PLUS: A post-birthday horror-rock nod to Glenn Danzig, a look back at the golden age of the oft-contested subgenre of Gothic Metal, more debuts, more horror soundtracks, more current & classic dark music, and the announcement of my next live DJ/Cult Film combo-appearance at Cult Fiction Underground in Nashville.
