The September 2014 Episode of "Out ov the Coffin" kicks off with new a song from Italy's The Spiritual Bat, who are currently in the midst of a US tour in support of their latest album, Mosaic. Not many traditional European goth/deathrock bands tour the US these days, so check out their remaining tour dates here.

From there, we launch into a pair of new songs from the land of eccentric deathrock: First, the b-side of the new 7-inch from The Deadfly Ensemble, Poison! Poison! Poison!, followed closely by vocalist Lucas Lanthier's alternate, stripped-down take on the classic he once wailed with Cinema Strange, "En Hiver," taken from his new release, The Brown Butterfly of Discontent. Both are available on their Bandcamp site, along with other new treats.

Continuing with what seems like the month for digital singles to be featured, California's Christ vs Warhol have returned with two new songs that serve as a preview of their forthcoming second album. You'll hear the new track "Into a New Ice Age," followed closely by another new digital single, "Thoughtless," from The Last Dance, whose recent string of singles will also lead to a new album release in the near future.

Then, we go a track deeper into the new album from Aurelio Voltaire (yes, that Voltaire!). Raised by Bats is his first foray into traditional deathrock and goth rock, and it is absolutely loaded with special guest musicians, including members of The Sisters of Mercy/The Mission UK, Ego Likeness, My Chemical Romance, Rasputina, The Dresden Dolls, and more. At Dragon Con recently, Voltaire responded to rumors that he might take a live band comprised of such people on the road, and he says the chances actually aren't that bad. Keep those fingers crossed!

Our second quality Italian act of the show, Horror Vacui, have also issued a Bandcamp teaser track -- entitled "5000" -- as a preview of what is to come from their next album, Return of the Empire, which will be released, along with a special limited 7" single, on their upcoming US tour this fall. Oh, how I wish I could get to one of those dates!

Next up is the 'Coffin debut of Former Humans, a California-based post-punk/deathrock act that features members of Bloodpenny and Hyena Motorcade, followed later in the set by two modern post-punk acts making their late debut on this show: Holograms from Sweden and The New Flesh from Oakland, California -- both with tracks from 2013 releases that I've finally gotten my hands on. Rounding out the set is the razor-voiced sound of Boston goth-punks Stranger, with a new song from their 2014 demo.

In the electronic realm, we'll examine two new releases from the burgeoning Charlottesville, Virginia scene, both related (in this case) to hometown heroes, Bella Morte. First up is a selection from the new EP from The Rain Within, the neo-darkwave/electro project of Bella Morte vocalist Andy Deane. We'll also check out a second new song from Gild the Mourn. The new band, comprised of (Bella Morte founding bassist) Gopal Metro & Angel Metro, create modern darkwave, based on timeless stories, inspired by ancient lore.

Finally, in the dark metal portion of the show, you'll hear a track from the long-awaited second album from Arkansas' Pallbearer. Foundations of Burden has just been issued on Profound Lore Records, and it continues to prove the band's ability to produce heart-wrenching, spirited doom anthems. For those in search of fresh black metal, you'll hear debuts from Sweden's Mortuus and Ukraine's Stryvigor, followed by brand new music from New Zealand's own "Apocalyptic Devil Rock" band, The House of Capricorn.

All of that, plus:  Another taste of the new Disemballerina album, Undertaker; a taste of the forthcoming Mentallo & the Fixer box set, Zothera; Atmosphere from the Guardians of the Galaxy score by Tyler Bates;  Selections from the local, dark metal, and post-punk vaults; and much more...

BONUS PODCAST: Compilation for the Dead 2014

[STREAM this episode (on Mixcloud)]
(or scroll to the bottom to stream it here)

Another Bonus podcast? Yes, indeed. The regular September episode of "Out ov the Coffin" will appear some time next week, but for now, please enjoy this podcast version of the Out ov the Coffin: Compilation for the Dead 2014.

"Compilation for the Dead," you say? Allow me to explain: Back in 2007, after attending Dragon Con for a couple of years, I really liked the idea of "convention exclusives" -- souvenirs that people could only get their hands on when they came to an event in person -- so I decided to make one of my own, and this series was born. This 2014 comp is the 8th installment so far.

Each year, I choose just under 80 minutes of new and current music to represent both my podcast and the current state of the goth & dark music scene. I then hand-craft 100 physical copies, and give them away to people that come to the goth-related panels that I moderate*. Once those are gone, I upload the mix as a podcast, so everyone else can hear it, too.

This year, I had the distinct pleasure of including two songs that had never-before appeared on CD: Gild the Mourn's "Shade," and one of my favorites from the new crop of singles from The Last Dance, "Scars." Those two join an impressive collection of current sounds that, to me, speak volumes for the health of this genre.

For those who just found out about this podcast at Dragon Con this year, I welcome you aboard. This is a special recap, but the next regular (monthly), brand new episode will launch next week, featuring even more great new music -- alongside classics, other current dark sounds, and even some of the selections that had to be cut from this compilation in order to fit on one disc.

In the meantime, if you're new to this podcast, I encourage you to check out some of the previous episodes (here or here), and to follow the show on Facebook.

Thanks,
Ichabod

BONUS PODCAST: "The Road to Dragon Con" Special, 2014

[STREAM this episode (on Mixcloud)]
(or scroll to the bottom to stream it here)

Dragon Con, Dragon Con, Dragon Con!!!

This bonus episode is (unofficially) all about Dragon Con, THE ultimate Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Comic Book, Horror, Pop-Culture, Film, Television, Music, Art, and everything-else-that's-cool convention, held annually in Atlanta, Georgia over Labor Day Weekend (August 28th - September 1st this year). In addition to panels, parties, and costuming, they also happen to feature a number of concerts from Darkwave, Industrial, and Goth bands, which is how I was first drawn into the fold back in 2005 -- which means that this will be my 10th year!

This episode features sounds and songs entirely related-to and inspired-by this year's guests, fan panels, and bands that will be performing live -- including brand new music from Voltaire and Bella Morte, along with songs from other new and returning acts like The Cruxshadows, Ayria, I:Scintilla, The Ghosts Project, Platform One, The Nathaniel Johnstone Band, Unwoman, and Marquis of Vaudeville.

On the playlist below, you will find not only the list of everything played on this podcast, along with links to each artist featured, but you will also find my notes on where to catch each related guest or performer at the convention (in small print below each name) -- because I'm here to help. Of course, you'll want to check the Official Program Guide to pinpoint the exact locations and make sure of the times -- and make sure to install the Dragon Con 2014 App HERE (for Android, iPhone, or Other devices).

Now, some of you will know me as the Assistant Director of The Horror Track, so you will no doubt find a lot of information on what we're doing this year, but I've made sure to highlight topics of interest from all across the convention's giant and mighty footprint on this episode.

If this podcast serves its purpose, it will turn you on to some attractions at Dragon Con that you might not have considered. Failing that, it should at least get you as excited to hurry up and get there as I am right now. So, grab this episode and listen to it on the ride down, or stream it while you're packing up your costumes, and I'll see you at the Con!

NOTE:  This podcast is independently produced, and not officially endorsed by Dragon*Con. 'Nuff said.

Also: If you're wondering what panels I will be moderating this year, here's the list:
  • Friday 10:00am: "True Blood" [Peachtree Ballroom A-F, Westin]
The show just aired its final episode EVER, and we all have so many questions. Come get them answered by cast members! Panelists: Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds), Kristin Bauer (Pam De Beaufort), Michael McMillian (Steve Newlin).
  • Friday 5:30pm: "State of the Goth Scene: Rock Edition" [Peachtree Room, Westin]
Part 1 of our annual discussion of the goth/industrial scene, starting on the goth, post-punk, and dark/weird indie side. Panelists: Andy & Tony (Bella Morte), Doc Hammer (Weep), Gopal & Angel Metro (Gild the Mourn), Erica Mulkey (Unwoman), Nathaniel Johnstone (Nathaniel Johnstone Band), Jeff Diehm (The Last Dance).
  • Saturday 11:30am: "True Blood" [Centennial II-III, Hyatt]
True Blood is over?!? It can't be! We discuss the success of the show with its cast members. Bring those burning questions! Panelists: Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds), Kristin Bauer (Pam De Beaufort), Michael McMillian (Steve Newlin).
  • Saturday 5:30pm: "State of the Goth Scene: Electronic Edition"  [Peachtree, Westin]
Part 2 of our annual discussion of the goth/industrial scene, this time focused on industrial, ebm, and darkwave. Panelists: Rogue & Jess (The Cruxshadows), V. Nigel Taylor (Platform One), Jennifer Parkin (Ayria), Jim Cookas (I:Scintilla), and maybe a surprise guest or two???
  • Saturday 10:00pm: "Twin Peaks: 25 Years Later"  [Peachtree Room, Westin]
"I'll see you again in 25 years," said Laura Palmer, in reverse, and we've now reached that mark. We discuss one of the greatest television shows of all time, and how it's fanbase continues to grow. Fan panel, with a multimedia collection of odd clips. Panelists:  Mari Mancusi, Michael Williams, Clay Gilbert.
  • Sunday 1:00pm: "True Blood" [Peachtree Ballroom A-F, Westin]
One more chance to get those answers about the final season of HBO's long-running supernatrual show. Panelists: Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds), Kristin Bauer (Pam De Beaufort), Michael McMillian (Steve Newlin).

NOTE: The Horror Track is located in the Westin, with most panels based out of the newly-renamed Peachtree Room on the 8th floor (two floors up from the entrance level; same room as last year), but some of our panels will be held in larger rooms, such as the Westin's Peachtree and Augusta Ballrooms, or the larger halls in the Hyatt or Marriott.

PODCAST: August 2014 Episode

[STREAM this episode right now on Mixcloud]
(or use the embedded player at the bottom of this post)

Welcome to the August 2014 Episode of "Out ov the Coffin." Before we get into what you will be hearing this time, I'd like to mention that, despite the now-monthly format of this show, there will be a bonus episode in the next few weeks: The annual "Road to Dragon Con" Special, which I've decided to treat as a separate show, rather than have it stand as the August episode. Look for that soon...

This episode formally begins with Pinkish Black's contribution to the new tribute album, The Cvlt Nation Sessions: Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures, for which the noted music and culture blog CVLT Nation has gathered a roster of current post-punk bands to each cover one of the classic tracks from Joy Division's now-iconic first full-length album. Want to hear the rest? You can grab it for free right here.

From there, the show moves into the world premiere of the new band Gild the Mourn, featuring Angel and Gopal Metro, the latter of which you should remember as a founding member of the bands Bella Morte and Brighter Fires. The duo have emerged with an ethereal darkwave sound befitting Gopal's other musical endeavours, but brought into new territory via Angel's vocals.

After a pair of '80s classics, we move to a pair of new post-punk/dark indie entries that seem to be cut from similar cloth. First up is a further track from Principe Valiente's Choirs of Blessed Youth, followed by an advance single from New York City's own Interpol, who will be returning with their 5th album, El Pintor, this fall. Close on their heels is a further cut from the new Peter Murphy album, Lion.

In the next set, we start with a brand new track from Oakland's Crimson Scarlet, taken from their new Athens Cave Sessions EP (you can name your price for it here), followed by the pleasantly New Order-esque demo track, "The Fool," from the new Texas band Captive (name your price for that one here). And, towards the end of the set, you'll get a second taste of Australia's Nervous Trend, from their 2013 demo.

In the darkwave/electro segment of the show, you'll hear a selection from the new Diary of Dreams album, Elegies in Darkness (sample it here), followed by the brand new single from Nashville's own "complextro" export, Cryogen Second. Their forthcoming Rust and Remain EP sees the band going further into their dream metal soundscapes, backed with some interesting remixes by several noteworthy acts. It can be pre-ordered and previewed here.

The dark metal portion of the show features a selection by Chasse-Galerie from the new four-way split from Sepulchral RecordingsLégendes, which sees each act paying tribute to Québec's regional dark mythology. More info and details here. Also in the spotlight: the new 20th Anniversary edition of the groundbreaking Emperor classic, In the Nightside Eclipse. The show then winds down with a further selection from  Alraune's The Process of Self-Immolation, and the new advance single from Electric Wizard's forthcoming Time to Die.

All of that, plus:  Another taste of the new Disemballerina album, Undertaker; Two horror soundtrack classics that have recently been re-issued on vinyl: "City of the Living Dead" (Death Waltz Recording Co.) and "Chopping Mall" (Waxwork Records); Selections from the goth, deathrock, local, and post-punk vaults; and much more...

This episode begins with a taste of the new album from Disemballerina, one of Portland's finest musical curiosities, who apply a bleak metal approach to the instrumentation of chamber music. Currently only available in its digital form, the deluxe vinyl edition of Undertaker is coming soon on Graceless Recordings.

In mid-June, the world of abstract cinema and jazz-noir lost the voice behind one of the most haunting moments in television history, Jimmy Scott (July 17, 1925 – June 12, 2014). Scott's collaboration with Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch on the song "Sycamore Trees" set an everlasting mood for Twin Peaks' Black Lodge and beyond, so you will find it at the beginning of the first full set, along with a heap of respect.

The new material continues with a deeper cut from the new Peter Murphy album, Lion. At the risk of overselling it, everybody should check out Murphy's collaboration with Youth (Killing Joke) on this set of songs. It represents a new side of his already impressive body of work.

Getting into the deathrock portion of the show, you'll hear more new music from Philadelphia's Theurgist, who have released a proper EP now, in the form of All of Them Lowly Creatures. You can find it here, and if you want to grab one of the shirts I mention on the show, they've just released those here.

In the post-punk realm, you'll hear another selection from the new Vaniish album, Memory Work, followed by the (late) debut of some fresh darkwave/dark-electro music from Vancouver's //zoo, taken from their recent 12" split with Petra Schelm. After that, new music out of Finland from the band the Flatfield, as a preview of their just-released album, Passionless.

In the experimental industrial realm, you'll hear a cut from the latest four-way cassette from Tapes of a Neon God. In this case, you'll get a taste of Void En Vogue's track from their split with Chruchdweller, Hadals, and Winter Ritual.

Finally, in the dark metal portion of the show, two new releases are featured as part of a tour spotlight. First, the debut of Alraune's The Process of Self-Immolation, a punishing lesson in black metal for an often stagnant scene. The CD version has just been released on Profound Lore, while the vinyl is coming out via Gilead Media. Tucked behind that is the latest single from Loss, taken from the new split with Hooded Menace, entitled A View from the Rope. The first run of the 12" is currently sold out, but a new pressing is on the way from Doomentia Records.

Loss and Alraune will perform together in Nashville on July 7th, when they cross paths with the current Ash Borer / Hell tour. From there, Alraune will begin their own tour, playing across the US, until all four bands converge again for this year's Gilead Media Music Fest in Osh Kosh Wisconsin -- hence a set featuring all four bands on this episode.

All of that, plus: A closing track from the new Mournful Congregation EP, Concresence of the Sophia; The late debut of Australia's Nervous Trend, whose excellent 2103 demo can be grabbed here; More convention and tour news; Selections from the deathrock vaults; and much more...
