GOOD EVENING... you have arrived just in time for The 2018 "Out ov the Coffin" Halloween Special! Hold out your bags and prepare to receive over 3 hours of Halloween-obsessed sonic tricks and treats. In addition to full-size songs from the most ghoulish realms of goth, post-punk, deathrock, horror punk, darkwave, industrial, and dark metal, you'll find hundreds of fun-sized clips from the crypts: Movie dialogue, sound effects, trailers, radio spots, tv ads, and, of corpse, horror film and television soundtracks, all assembled in ritual formation, and (g)hosted by yours truly.

In addition to traditional Hallowed Hymns, I have unearthed some new arrivals for this year's special, including recently deceased entries from
Grave Society, The Dirty Horror, Ritual Howls, Nox Novacula, Draconian Incubus,The Spiritual Bat, Sargeist, and fresh soundtrack work from "The Haunting of Hill House" and John Carpenter's new "Halloween" soundtrack for 2018.

While this show was coming together, James Karen, who played one of my favorite roles in my favorite film of all, "The Return of the Living Dead" (1985), passed away at the age of 94. To honor his memory, I paid several tributes to him and his iconic role as Frank throughout this episode.

R.I.P. James Karen (1924-2018)

And with that, I send you into the night eternal. May this show improve your Halloween season -- and if so, please share it on your social platform of choice!

This month's episode is the Out ov the Coffin: Compilation for the Dead 2018. What's that? Well, if you ran into me at Dragon Con this year, you already know -- but for the rest of you, the "Compilation for the Dead" is a mixtape-style version of the podcast, designed to play through without breaks, so your ears can be flooded with the latest crop of new and current dark music that I think people should know about. It serves as both a good intro to the show, for newcomers, and a convenient collection of new and recent standouts for longtime listeners. Or, as the kids say, "nothing but bangers."

I started the "Compilation for the Dead" series back in 2007, after attending Dragon Con for a couple of years, where I would consistently have conversations about the state of "goth" music, the health of "the scene," and if there were any good bands still putting music out these days. My answer to the last question was always an emphatic "yes, damn it!," but in order to put my money where my mouth was, I decided to create proof.

"I made you a mixtape...." Except not in the creepy way. Wait 'til next month for that...

Anyway, each year I choose an album's worth of strictly new and current music to represent this podcast, my DJing style, and, most importantly, the current state of the goth & the wider dark music scene as I see it.

For those who just found out about Out ov the Coffin, welcome aboard. New, "regular" episodes happen once a month, featuring even more great new music -- but those episodes also include classics from the vault, episodic themes, and further cuts into current dark sounds from the realms of post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, goth, industrial, film scores, dark metal, and more. The next one will be October's traditional Halloween Special, which should arrive about this time next month, with "regular" episodes resuming again in November and December.

In the meantime, if you're new to this podcast, I encourage you to check out some of the previous episodes (here or here), and to follow the show on Facebook and Instagram.

Thanks,
Ichabod

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This month, in addition the regular flow of the show that you (hopefully) know and love, I have included a special set in the middle, focusing on Dragon Con 2018, the annual sci-fi/comics/horror/fantasy/music/et cetera-convention held every labor day weekend in Atlanta, GA. More on that later, when we get to that set...

First up on this episode is new music from Boise, Idaho's Aelter, a more somber, goth-forward musical outlet for Blk from the band Wolvserpent. The new album is entitled One, and you can check out the rest of it here.

From there, we launch in to the first full set of the show, starting with newcomers
U.S. Grave (Phoenix, Arizona), who set the tone with an upbeat gloomy number from their Voice of an Idiot Ghost EP. We then dig a track deeper into two current releases: The new Raise the Lights EP from NAUT, followed by Borderlands from Denver's Weathered Statues. Los Angeles deathrockers The Dirty Horror jump in with both boots next, delivering the 'Coffin premiere of their new single, "Dead Eyes," followed by a second look at Autobahn's 2017 album, The Moral Crossing. Finally, the set closes with a request for a new London act, The Visceral Pleasure, whose sound is pleasantly reminiscent of certain pockets of '90s goth, for fans of Lycia and the like.

DRAGON CON 2018:

The second full set acts as a spotlight on Dragon Con 2018, which takes place in Atlanta, Georgia across multiple host hotels on Labor Weekend (August 30th - September 3rd). If you've never been, imagine 80,000 fans of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, music, gaming, comics, film, toys, puppets, anime, cosplay, and anything else you can be far too into, coming together in one location to celebrate those things with the people that make them. They book cool goth/industrial-related bands.

Disclaimer: I volunteer and serve as the Assistant Director for Dragon Con's Horror Track, so this set leans that way, but they are not connected with this podcast in any way. That said, if you're coming to the convention, come by the Horror Track room (Westin Peachtree 1-2, on the 8th floor) and say hello. Also, catch me moderating my annual goth panel:

"Goth A.D. 2018"
Saturday, 2:30pm, Westin Peachtree 1-2
Panelists: Aurelio Voltaire, Cruxshadows, Jess-O-Lantern, and possibly more TBA...

(Download the Dragon Con 2018 app to see the full list of guests and panels for the Horror Track and all the other tracks, too).

With that said, this set includes music from several of this year's live performers, including the return of Abney Park, mainstays The Crüxshadows and Aurelio Voltaire, plus newcomers The Cybertronic Spree -- a Transfomers-themed cover/tribute act that plays the soundtrack from the 1986 film, plus other '80s synth-rock anthems, like the theme from "Kung Fury," which I've included here. Not only that, but they do so while dressed as fucking Autobots! Seriously, check out the video here. Sandwiched in between the songs of this set are several iconic horror trailers, which I've included in reference to The Horror Track panels we'll have this year about each of them, to mark significant anniversaries of their release dates. Anyway, now that my nerdity is showing, I'll move on to the next, not-Con-related set...

Set three begins with newly-released old material from
Ego Likeness, taken from the 2-disc collection of their earliest material, entitled Songs from a Dead City, which was just made available from Metropolis Records. Following similar sonic lines, Helix comes next with something from their new album Twin. Not to be confused with the hair-raising '80s metal band, this Helix is a collaboration between Tom Shear (Assemblage 23) and vocalist Mari Kattman (Day Twelve, Mari & The Ghost). I then reach back to 2005 for a second dear vault track, this time from System Syn's Postscript album, before delving deeper into the latest, and sadly last, album from Them Are Us Too. As the set began, so it ends, with a re-issued classic courtesy of Metropolis Records. This time, we get a taste of The Legendary Pink Dots1992 album, Shadow Weaver.

The fourth set eases into the dark metal realm with a pair of acts that began life (death?) on the extreme side of the metal fence, then hopped over, in favor of different pastures. First up is Norway's Manes, whose sound is a bit hard to peg, but interesting to follow on their latest, Slow Motion Death Sequence. Fans of Garm's output take note. Next, we step back just over 20 years for a look back at the onset of Tiamat's flirtation with psychedelic goth rock on A Deeper Kinf of Slumber. If all that isn't heavy enough for you, never fear, we then go a cut deeper into Drudkh's new album, Їм часто сниться капіж (They Often See Dreams About the Spring).Canada's Finnr's Cane step in next with a taste of their brand new album, before we ultimately close this episode with another great song from Délétère's latest opus, De Horae Leprae.

All of that PLUS: New film/television soundtrack work from Thomas Newman's "Castle Rock" score and "Annihilation" by Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow; Multiple film/music anniversaries to note; and more!

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This month, we start with a look back at one of the greatest works in the extensive catalog of The Legendary Pink Dots, a band as prolific as they are (sadly) underrated. Although it can be admittedly difficult to jump in just anywhere in their library and be able to latch on, the band's 1987 album Any Day Now is one that I often recommend as a great place to start, so the newly remastered and expanded edition just released by Metropolis Records gets the spotlight this time, with one of my personal favorites and a bonus rarity that is only to be found on this version.

The first full set begins with new music from Them Are Us Too, who completed work on their Amends album as a way of providing closure for a promising career cut short, following the tragic death of founding member Cash Askew in the Ghost Ship fire of 2016. Rough recordings of her own performances were mixed with that of friends and family members to realize what would have been the band's second album. The result, I must say, far exceeds expectations, as the surprisingly fast-paced lead single (which also has a new video) has already claimed a spot among my favorite songs of 2018. I can't stop listening to it.

The set continues with newly-recorded music from A Flock of Seagulls, who created orchestral versions of many of their best songs for their new Ascension LP. Two newcomers from Texas are up next: First, Twin Tribes give us some solid new post-punk from their Shadows album, followed by Temple of Angels, wearing their Chameleons influence proudly on a track from last year's self-titled release. Alex Reed (Seeming, ThouShaltNot) then steps in with one of his earliest works -- written as a 15-16 year old, but only recently recorded -- as part of a new collection called The Gothic (available as a free perk for joining his new Patreon). As the title implies, the album has more of a directly gothic style, and it works quite well. Florida's Asatri Nite rounds out the set with a deeper cut from their new Midnight Offerings album.

The second set begins with fresh UK post-punk/goth rock from NAUT, taken from their new Raise the Lights EP, a release that drips confidence and energy from the start. I catch up on some music from Germany's Bleib Modern next, taken from their 2014 EP Lows, before jumping 20 years prior for a classic from Children on Stun's 1994 Overland EP. Oakland's The Ink Bats arrive next with a taste of their 2017 LP Loss, which leads us to the first of two stops for this episode in 1989, this one from Little Nemo. Finally, the set rounds out with a (surprise?) nod to "The Crow," which I recently re-watched after god knows how long. Seeing it again made me dig hard in the vaults for a super-rare early 2000s track from Keima that had been directly inspired by the film. And then, of corpse, I had to dig up Graeme Revell's score for the subsequent talk break.

Set three begins with a deeper cut from Pure Desperation by Washington's Dancing Plague, partly in honor of their upcoming tour, which will see the band playing Nashville (among other places) in November (details forthcoming). We then go deeper into the latest from Chicago's Panic Priest, providing yet another solid piece of modern darkwave. Off to France next for something from new-ish from Lovataraxx, who provide an interesting blend of styles on their Kairos album, before looking back at a five-year classic from New York's NOIR. Shadows Beloved then make their 'Coffin debut, with the lead track from The Quiet Machines, before we once again look back on a vault-selection from 1989, this time a floor-commander from The Fair Sex.

The dark metal portion of the show begins with a classic this time, because, let's face it, I re-discover how great Anathema is every few years. First up in the realm of new material is the opening track from Drudkh's new album, Їм часто сниться капіж (They Often See Dreams About the Spring) -- and to the surprise of nobody, Ukraine's favorite sons are still excellent. New black metal from Sweden's Vanhelga comes next, from their new LP Fredagsmys, followed by a premiere from Portland's latest super-group, Khôrada. If you were wondering what became of the guys from Agalloch after their split, three of the four are to be found here, and the result does not disappoint. I didn't know what style to expect from the Salt LP, but I am pleased.

Finally, the whole show draws to a close with the opening track from Yob's Our Raw Heart, an album that almost didn't come to light, given the near-death experience that voclist/guitarist Mike Scheidt underwent. Perhaps you'd like to read more about that here while you take in the full piece.

All of that PLUS: Cult cinema anniversary nods to "Phantasm II" (30th anniversary this month) and "The Devil Rides Out" (50th anniversary this month); Further cinematic call-backs, unsolicited reviews, trivia, and more!

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This month's episode begins at the hot, sweaty crack of summer, but looks back (or forth, depending on your perspective) at a more pleasant time, by way of new music from Minneapolis band Autumn, who have returned from a long break with their first new album in almost 20 years, Chandelier. Fans of the band's late-'90s output will not be disappointed, as the William Faith-produced new album picks up where the band left off at the turn of the century. The band will also mount a US tour this fall, so watch for those dates.

Having played one of his earlier works on the last show, set two kicks off with new music from Eric Vain, who seems ever-able to pen dark, varied, catchy-yet-goth-friendly songs, as evident on the new EP, Pedestals for the Broken. We then hear our first taste of Louisville super-group Fotocrime's anticipated full-length,
Principle of Pain, which continues to develop and expand the band's newfound goth/darkwave sound. A deeper cut from Soft Kill's new Savior LP comes next, and from the looks of it, one of America's hardest-working post-punk/coldwave acts might even have another new album out by the end of this year(!), already.

A look back at the short-lived, but not forgotten, output of Brighter Fires (featuring the original line-up of Bella Morte) comes next, followed by a raw and challenging new track from ROME's latest, Hall of Thatch. A band that I will sadly miss on tour (again) has the honors of both closing this set and backing the next talk break: Atlanta's Algiers, who has such a wide variety of cool influences and innovative combinations that the band could really take its pick of bills to join and events to play, while impressing everybody in attendance with how powerful they are, regardless -- or perhaps in spite of -- typical genre limitations.

Finland's Silent Scream leads the second set with a track from their 2010 debut album of brash deathrock/post-punk, followed by an even deeper dive into the vaults for some obscure mid '90s gothic rock, courtesy of Witching Hour. Minnesota's Grave Society then returns with a deeper track from their new matte-black goth rock EP, Act I: Dictum Nyctophilia, before we revisit Altar de Fey's modern deathrock classic Echoes in the Corridor. A pair of early-'80s classics from Sex Gang Children and Ultravox round out the set. Ultravox's Ultra-vocalist Midge Ure, as mentioned in the show, is currently on tour in Europe and the US.

Set three begins with a debut from Chicago's Panic Priest, with the very catchy lead track from their self-titled new release on Negative Gain Productions. Another brand new remix from The Cure's Torn Down follows, leading into a pair of tracks from just a few years ago that I wanted to turn back and feature again: First from She Past Away, who is played quite often in clubs (like the upcoming 5th Anniversary of Fascination Street here in Nashville), if not on radio, and second, All Your Sisters, whose 2014 title track, "Modern Failures," is an underrated darkwave gem. Brand new harsh industrial from Cardinal Noire's new Deluge album comes next, followed by another revisited classic from Seraphim Shock.

Tribulation leads the dark metal portion of the show this time, with another track deeper into their new Down Below album. Next, the French-Canadian black metal scene triumphs again with the latest from Délétère, followed by a second taste of the new Primordial album, Exile Amongst the Ruins. I then throw the spotlight on Oakland's Void Omnia and Seattle's Isenordal, who are currently on tour together in support of their new split release of blistering black metal, funereal doom, and dark folk. The tour arrives in Nashville on July 5th, presented by some weird radio show called "Out ov the Coffin." Wonder who that is...

All of that PLUS: Fresh synthwave from Acid Vatican (a collaborative project of Antoni Maiovvi & Vercetti Technicolor) taken from their new Never Forget How to Bear album; Selections from the vault of cult dark movie scores; News, tour dates, and more!
