New club night in Nashville: Fascination Street

For those in the Nashville area (or those willing to travel), this Saturday night (July 6th) brings the first edition of my brand new dance/club event, Fascination Street. The focus for this night is on current and classic permutations of post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, and traditional goth music. The goal is to bridge the gap between the sounds that the goth scene was built on, and the bands that have picked up that torch, run with it, or used its fire to expand our horizons ever since.

For listeners of "Out ov the Coffin," you can expect a mix of music not unlike the first hour or so of each podcast, choosing the songs that make people move, but without getting into the techno/ebm/trance realm. For those who want a deeper explanation, or some examples, check out some of the songs and requests that we and others have been posting on the Event Page, or the longer explanation of the idea behind the event on the Facebook Page.

It's always good news when The Legendary Pink Dots come out with a new album, and this show begins with the first track from The Gethsemane Option, which has just been released on Metropolis Records. The band will hit the road this Fall in the US and beyond. You can see the tour dates here.

It's a busy time for the current post-punk and modern goth scene. This show features a short list of new entries from all corners of the globe and the genre. Germany leads the charge this time, first with a second dose of the new Bloody Dead and Sexy album, Bad Ambient, then with the premiere of fellow Germans salvation AMP. Their new album Hidden Faces can be investigated further here.

Meanwhile, in Belgium, KTAOABC (aka Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat) has been releasing free recordings of cover songs they've captured at recent shows. The first was a SWANS cover -- and the second? A Virgin Prunes classic that you'll hear on this show. Making an overdue premiere on this episode is Portland, Oregon's Dead Cult, whose cassette release Surviving in a Dying World came out last year, but finally makes its debut here and now.

Speaking of a busy season for the modern post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, and traditional goth scene, I spend a few minutes on this episode talking about my new club night, Fascination Street, which starts on Saturday, July 6th @ The East Room in Nashville, TN. My apologies to those far from the area, but I'm more than a little excited. For those who may wish to attend, here's the event page, with all the details.

Back to the new music, London's White Lies have emerged with one of the catchiest singles I've heard in a long while, acting as free teaser for their upcoming album, Big TV. Fellow Londoners AlterRed return with with their latest electro-cabaret cocktail, The Time It Takes to Smile, which closes a conceptual trilogy of albums. Learn more here.

Also in the electronic/industrial realm, you'll hear a bonus new b-side from Snog, followed by a look at early industrial and EBM, inspired by the release of ThouShaltNot vocalist/composer S. Alexander Reed's new book, "Assimilate: A Critical History of Industrial Music." Pick that up here, and check out this in-depth interview he did about it on NPR.

On the heavier end of the spectrum, the long-awaited new album from Austria's Summoning has been unleashed. The once-again Tolkien-obsessed subject matter and epic-scale fantasy black metal are in top shape on Old Mornings Dawn. Get it in several varieties here. This episode kicks off with a brand new track from Germany's Bloody Dead and Sexy, whose experiments in deathrock and modern goth rock are among the best currently circulating, so new music from them is the sort of news that is always good. Their latest album is entitled Bad Ambient, and you can find out more about it here.

A band with quite the buzz behind them right now is London's Savages, who have quickly jumped into the international spotlight with their catchy-yet-confrontational post-punk sound. They've already landed tour slots with Portishead in Europe, and Queens of the Stone Age in the US, and to get you ready to see them, you'll hear a selection from their new album Silence Yourself.

Quite by accident, this episode brings in a trio of debuts from Los Angeles bands. First up is the indie post-punk of Cold Showers, with a taste of their latest Love & Regret album, which has now been followed by a brand new single. The already-noteworthy Bestial Mouths have released a single from their forthcoming self-titled album that sees the band pushing the boundaries of their deathwave combination of synths, deathrock, and unlit noise.

In the industrial realm, you'll find the third of the L.A. acts that are new to this episode, in the form of Chiildren (yes, that's the correct spelling), whose fusion of industrial, noise, and harsh metal sounds has been catching people off guard on their latest EP, The Other People. While we're in the realms of dark industrial tones, you'll get another slice of Kalpamantra's new Apogee compilation (get it free right here), in the form of Nam-Khar.

On the way out, you'll get to be the judge of the controversial, yet also widely praised, new single from San Francisco's Deafheaven. With all the questions about whether a band from a black metal background is allowed to name their album Sunbather, or have a bright pink cover, or incorporate sounds that are on the uplifting side, one might get distracted from whether or not it actually sounds good -- so I'll let you check it out and see.

You'll hear all of that, PLUS: Another accidental trilogy, in the form of '70s/'80s horror-prog; a look back at Lycia's monumental Cold album to celebrate its much-anticipated release on vinyl; a third trilogy, in the form of three epic-length doom songs (because: 3 of everything!); several rarities and b-sides from the post-punk/deathrock vault; and much more...

This episode begins and ends with a tribute to Ray Manzarek of The Doors, who passed away on May 20th. The influence of Ray and the rest of the Doors can be heard in all sorts of music today, but their influence on goth music is something I hold dear, as they are not only remembered as one of the greatest bands in history, they are also among the first to have their music dubbed "gothic rock." Whatever you like to call what they did, it is both great and eternal, so rest in peace, Ray.

Hot off the presses for this show is an advance track from California's Hyena Motorcade. The song will appear on a forthcoming release later in the year, but they wanted to give everyone an advance taste, which you can revisit here. And if that's not enough, you can check out some of their other material here.

Making their debut on this episode: Greek post-punk act Wonky Doll & the Echo, whose bizarre name shouldn't keep you from checking out their full album, Pleasant Thoughts, which you can find here. Returning to the show this time with a brand new EP is Italian post-punk/goth band Christine Plays Viola, whose Leocadia release can be explored further here.

In the industrial territory, you'll hear more of the new Skinny Puppy album, Weapon. Pick up the limited edition Vinyl version of that one here, or the CD version here. Once again on the heels of the new Skinny Puppy is a track from France's Chrysalide, who are no strangers to the 'Puppy sound whatsoever. In this instance, you might even confuse the two.

Fans of dark ambient will delight in another slice of Kalpamantra's new Apogee compilation (get it free right here), this time from Russian act Cyclotimia, who actually partnered with a US company at one point to have their music sent into space(!).

Fans of dark ambient, soundtracks, and instrumental experimentation have several new reasons to celebrate. Kalpamantra has released yet another free collection of quality dark ambient, in the form of the new Apogee compilation (get it here), from which you'll hear new music from Italy's Phantom Ship on this episode. Meanwhile, Heathen Harvest released the second installment in their Walpurgisnacht series, which you can find for free here. Between this episode and the next, I'll have the distinct pleasure of seeing Peter Murphy perform an all-Bauhaus set in Atlanta. To celebrate that, this show begins with one of my personal favorite Bauhaus songs, "Silent Hedges." With any luck, I'll get to hear it live, as it seems to have popped up in the set at least once already on this tour.

Brand new to the show this time is a live track from one of the most promising of the current crop of Gothic Rock acts, the U.K.'s Terminal Gods. This one was recorded just one month ago, and it was (briefly) made available as a free track. You can currently get the whole concert as a bonus if you pick up their latest shirt.

Sweden's Principe Valiente are back with a new single, entitled "Take Me With You." You'll hear it on this episode, but you can grab one for yourself right here later on. Making his debut on this show is New Zealand's Paul Amlehn, an experimental artist of many disciplines whose forthcoming Blood of Union project features collaborations with a whole list of notables, in addition to featuring cover art by David Lynch himself.

Also making their debut on this episode is California's Crimson Scarlet, with a song from their self-titled 7-inch. They represent another exciting (dark) entry to the new wave of US deathrock, goth, and post-punk. Speaking of which, you'll hear yet another fresh track to the show from New York City's Anåsazi, this time taken from their 2012 demo cassette. Not to be outdone, Italy and the UK teamed up to bring us new music from Horror Vacui's In Darkness, You Will Feel Alright. Viva la Deathrock!

Sadly, between the last episode and this one, we lost another musician: Christopher David, vocalist/songwriter for Judith, as well as the former bassist for Requiem in White. This episode begins with a small tribute to him, and to his work, in the form of a song from each of those acts. I do not have much information on how he passed, but may he rest in peace.

Brand new to the show for this episode is fresh post-punk from Russia's Twinmachine, whose new album Tomorrow That Never Was can be heard here. While you're in the post-punk mood, you'll also hear further new sounds from Vancouver's Spectres, whose Nothing to Nowhere album was first thrown in the spotlight on the last episode. For even more of the upbeat/aggressive side of new post-punk, you'll get another taste of New York City's Anåsazi, whose infectious sound has not left my speakers in recent weeks.

Also new to the show for this episode: Music from Roque Baños' score for the newly rebooted/remade Evil Dead film. Much has been said in favor of this version of the movie, and I liked it myself, but it was the music that struck me most, so you'll hear two selections from that album on this show.

For accuracy's sake, I must correct an error I made when speaking about Mute Angst Envy on this show. While their 1991 album Archetype/Trust stood as their only work for quite some time, it was not their only release. Many years later, in 2004, the band regrouped and released South 11th Street, which I will be sure to feature on a future episode, so the record can be set straight. Sometimes I speak too quickly on these shows (and sometimes, it's really, really late).

In addition to all of that, you'll also hear: Deeper cuts from the latest Ulterior and Saltillo albums; an early version of one of The Cure's classics; a fond look back at the mid-'90s heyday of classical (and sometimes even goth)-influenced dark crossover-metal; and more!
