This episode begins with what might seem an odd choice to some, an older song from Rammstein, newly reworked as a somber piano piece. It appears on the new Mein Herz Brennt single, which also includes a b-side, some alternate versions, and a remix. Though often pushed aside as a band that doesn't fit in the goth/industrial scene, that always seemed to have more to do with the climate in which they gained popularity. Also: I don't care, because they wrote some very powerful music at times.

They also issued an interesting video for the piano version.

The show then digs a bit deeper into Naiades, the latest album from Monica Richards (of Faith and the Muse), whose artwork adorns the pages of a great hardcover book that accompanies the album. Check it out here. Those whose connection with nature is inspired by her current work may also find Lasher Keen to be of interest. Their new album Berserker offers a primal fusion of neo-folk influences and dark psychedelic experimentation, which really has to be heard to be appreciated. It is a vinyl only release that can be found here.

Ulterior continues to impress me with the ever-driving instant-classic "Body Hammer" on this episode, taken from their new album, The Bleach Room. Also for fans of driving gothic rock, Grooving in Green will release a physical CD version of their latest album, Stranglehold, this month. The band features former members of Solemn Novena and Children on Stun -- which is all I needed to hear. You can order that CD here, after hearing the ever-catchy title track that is featured prominently on this episode.

In the electro/industrial realm, Vomito Negro make their debut on the show with a track from their new Fall of an Empire album, and I dig a bit deeper into the latest albums from Saltillo and Light Asylum. As we reach the 10th anniversary mark of the release of God Module's first album, Empath, the band is mounting a special tour (with the Ludovico Technique) on which they will perform that album in its entirety. That show hits Nashville on March 26th @ The Rutledge, but the full tour dates can be seen here.

There hasn't been a great deal of new black metal on the show as of late, but that will be remedied on this episode with new material from Saturnian Current, as well as a nice long new piece from Ash Borer, which features guest vocals from Jessica Way of Worm Ouroboros.

All of that, plus: Many honorable mentions to give out after the "Best ov 2012" show, New ambient sounds from Forrest Fang (taken from Projekt Records' free Winter Sampler), A tip of the hat to John Carpenter for his birthday this week, More new soundtrack entries for Batman and Hobbit fans, and even more new & current music, mixed with a few classics and obscurities from the vault.

For this, the first episode of 2013, I'm taking my traditional look back at the last year with the "Best ov 2012," in the realms of Goth, Post-punk, Deathrock, Darkwave, Industrial, EBM, Dark Ambient, Film Scores, Doom, Dark Metal, and other areas of ethereal and experimental fusions of unlit sound.

Living in the age of digital singles and frequent EP releases, it's becoming harder to compile a list of albums, but I've featured the artwork from many of my top picks in the collage you see above. Don't look at it as a complete list -- that's what the podcast itself is for -- and the covers are not placed in order of rank. I didn't want to narrow things down that far, so it was put together with aesthetics in mind.

While most of what is featured on this almost 3-and-a-half-hour special has been heard on the show in the last 12 months, there are a few new selections that got in just under the wire, including some last-minute releases, and a few things that almost evaded my ears in 2012. Almost.

If you decide to store and keep just one "Out ov the Coffin" podcast each year, I would recommend this one, as it has been designed to act as a time-capsule. If this works as intended, it will please the most loyal listeners, while turning new and casual listeners on to some releases they didn't yet check out. As always, if you like the show, please pass the link (or the file itself) along to anyone and everyone you think might enjoy it.

BONUS: After the playlist, I've included a great selection of videos from the albums that made the 'Best ov 2012' show. Enjoy...
