PODCAST: December 2014 Episode

Traditionally, a warped sort of X-mas episode appears here in December, but there was a lack of new and dark holiday-related songs this year (no way!), so I can't put that kind of episode under your tree this time; however, this episode is loaded down with new music to check out (and, okay, *one* morbidly glamorous X-Mas obscurity from the vaults that I simply couldn't live without), so in that regard, let's consider this show a gift.

One band that did deliver on a Christmas song this year: The Crüxshadows. Their free (or donations-appreciated) single "Light A Way (Back Home)" is available here. It's a bit jolly for the tone of this episode (not that there's anything wrong with that!), so I didn't include it here, but if you absolutely can't live without some goth-related X-Mas revelry, you can revisit the infamous last Out ov the Coffin Xmas Bonus Episode here.

You also may be wondering about the "Best ov 2014" show. That one is coming up next! Look for the upload around January 9th, after I've had a chance to fully soak in all the releases I may have missed. In the meantime, this episode is loaded with new music, because good bands just keep releasing new stuff, all the way up to the bitter end of the year.

This episode begins with a selection from Mitternacht, the latest album from the mysterious and ever-distraught, literally gothic, Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows. From there, we finally get to the lavishly packaged and amazingly extensive new box set from ROMEA Passage to Rhodesia. This double-album set (and DVD, and 10-inch, and hardbound book, and much more) is a concept album that shoukld really be taken as a whole, but as far as sound goes, it finds Jérôme Reuter returning to some of his early martial-pop sounds, as well as his more recent deep folk style, stretched across a little-known historical narrative.

The post-punk noir of Ritual Howls follows next, with a selection from their new Turkish Leather album, leading into the frenetic dark punk sounds of Canada's White Lung, taken from their new Deep Fantasy album. The Smiths' guitarist, Johnny Marr, steps in after that, with a post-punk-leaning track from his new solo album, Playland, and -- following a classic from the '90s goth vaults -- the set finishes with more dark-punk/deathrock from the new Lost Tribe album, Solace.

The second set leads with a debut from the new Swedish post-punk band, Hemgraven, taken from their Sanddyner av glas album, followed by several early '80s classics (one of them being the ultimate drunken-feather-boa Christmas carol from Hanoi Rocks). The set closes with another post-punk/darkwave debut, this one from Warmline's very-simply-titled new album Sad, followed by the flipside (and title track) of the new single from Night Sins, entitled Down to Drown.

The darkwave/synth/industrial set for this show begins with a newly-unearthed 1983 rarity from Ministry, made doubly-surprising when you consider the source. Al Jourgensen himself not only acknowledged the band's early style for the first time in years by bringing up the lost track, but he then gave the song away for free. You can get the download here or here. Now that you're dancing, you'll be ready for another debut, this time from Italian darkwave act, Ash Code, who give you a slice of their new album, Oblivion

The set continues with a second taste of Hot Guts' new album, Wildsfolllowed by a classic from Front Line Assembly, who I finally got to see live in Atlanta the other day, along with the ever-promising relative newcomers in  Youth Code, from whom you will hear another taste of the year-end-list-favorite A Place to StandVelvet Acid Christ rounds out the set with the closing track from their new Subconscious Landscapes album.

The dark metal portion of the show begins once again with music from Atriarch's An Unending Pathway, before launching into a track from the new Cult of Fire 7-inch, Čtvrtá Symfonie OhněAbigor then makes their triumphant return to the show with a song from the heavily-praised Leytmotif Luzifer, hailed by many as a brilliant return to form, before the set concludes with a debut from the new Bölzer release, Soma.

All of that, plus: A closing track from the new Pallbearer album, Foundations of Burden; An instrumental debut from Ireland's Vircolac; Selections from the new and cult soundtrack vaults; and much more...

PODCAST: November 2014 Episode

[STREAM this episode right now on Mixcloud]
(or use the embedded player at the bottom of this post)

In contrast to last month's Halloween special, which was full of staples and classics, the November episode of "Out ov the Coffin" is almost entirely comprised of brand new releases that have amassed over the past few months, with a few classics that have presented themselves lately for re-examination.

This show begins with one of my personal favorites from Coil, to mark the anniversaries of the deaths of its core members, John Balance, who died this week ten years ago, and Peter Christopherson, who died four years ago as of the 25th of this month. Yet another small tribute to keep the flame alive.

From there, the show moves into a classic starting-song from my earliest radio days, followed gracefully by new music from Golden Apes, who decided to explore the acoustic side of their goth rock sound on their latest release, The Langsyne Litanies. Later in the set, Unwoman maintains that refined atmosphere with a selection from Circling, her latest, and even more accessible, hybrid of neo-classical instrumentation and darkwave approach.

For those in need of more "plugged" instrumentation, the next set kicks off with a new track from Bella Morte, whose Exorcisms album finally saw release on Halloween (marked by a great set in Nashville that night!), followed closely a brand new one from Night Sins, who I sincerely wish would come through Nashville to promote their forthcoming 7-inch, Down to Drown., as they represent one of the great hopes of the current scene. After a couple of classics, the new releases (and great hopes for the scene) continue with a deeper cut into Horror Vacui's new album, Return of the Empire, and a taste of the just-released new Lost Tribe album, Solace.

In the realm of dark electronics, everything is new this time, starting with Zola Jesus, who's back with a more pop-centric release, from which you'll hear the more abstract-leaning title track, Taiga. Velvet Acid Christ has returned with Subconscious Landscapes, an album that plays to their more mid-tempo ethereal works, which suits me just fine. Following that, you'll get a taste of Wilds from newcomers Hot Guts, who mix darkwave, industrial, and post-punk influences with rare success.

The much-lauded Youth Code has come back even stronger with their A Place to Stand EP, out just in time to see them hit the road with Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, and Haujobb(!). See theose tour dates here. Meanwhile, NOIR has issued a collection of remixes, entitled RE:MIT:TENT, from which you'll hear one of my favorites, THEN, I finally get around to the much-talked-about aggro-industrial band 3TEETH, from their latest, self-titled, album.

The dark metal portion of the show begins with music from the highly anticipated new record from Atriarch, entitled An Unending Pathway, followed by a second taste of the new Pallbearer album, Foundations of Burden. After a deeper cut from Morning Star Rise, the latest from New Zealand's The House of Capricorn, the set ends with brand new music from Winterfylleth, whose atmospheric black metal sound on The Divination of Antiquity took me back to the scene's late '90s glory daze.

Two unlikely collaborators are paired to close this episode, with a track from Yob's new Clearing the Path to Ascend bleeding into a (free) piece from Lisa Gerrard's new Twilight Kingdom album. Odd on paper, but satisfying in feel.

All of that, plus:  New music from Hans Zimmer's "Interstellar" and John Ottman's "X-Men: Days of Future Past" film scores; An unusual (and free) take on the music of Emperor from the new Unto Ashes release, Ghosts Captured; Selections from the avant-goth, romantic, and post-punk vaults; and much more...

PODCAST: Halloween Special 2014!

[STREAM this episode right now on Mixcloud]
(or use the embedded player at the bottom of this post)

Just in time to kick off Halloweek, it's here! The biggest show of each year, the "Out ov the Coffin" Halloween Special, is back (from the graaaave) with a brand new face for 2014. Not sure whose face it is, but there was an awful lot of blood involved, and it clocks in at 4 FULL HOURS!!! Play it while you get your costume on, listen to it in the car on the way to the party, make everyone listen to it when you get there! Play it all at once, or take it in small doses -- just play it! And pass it along.

But first, kill the lights. Here's what's in store...

Along with heaps of unburied seasonal classics and recently deceased newcomers, this episode features brand new music from Aurelio Voltaire, taken from Raised by Bats (his first actual goth/deathrock album); a brand new cut from Italy's modern deathrock champions, Horror Vacui, who will be releasing their Return of the Empire album just in time for their US tour this Halloween; and dark metal from Krieg's new Transient album & Sargeist's latest, Feeding the Crawling Shadows.

After three full hours of seasonal goth essentials, creeping soundtrack work, crippling movie trailers, severed horror quotes, and selections from the post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, industrial, and dark metal vaults, you'll be treated to a final BONUS set, reliving the height (or the depths?) of the '80s Heavy Metal Horror Movie age, when Satanic Panic led the masses to fantasize about being killed... by loud guys with tight pants and huge hair. On Halloween.

From morbid nostalgia, to modern necromancy, it's the Halloween Special that never quits!

PODCAST: September 2014 Episode

(or use the embedded player at the bottom of this post)

The September 2014 Episode of "Out ov the Coffin" kicks off with new a song from Italy's The Spiritual Bat, who are currently in the midst of a US tour in support of their latest album, Mosaic. Not many traditional European goth/deathrock bands tour the US these days, so check out their remaining tour dates here.

From there, we launch into a pair of new songs from the land of eccentric deathrock: First, the b-side of the new 7-inch from The Deadfly Ensemble, Poison! Poison! Poison!, followed closely by vocalist Lucas Lanthier's alternate, stripped-down take on the classic he once wailed with Cinema Strange, "En Hiver," taken from his new release, The Brown Butterfly of Discontent. Both are available on their Bandcamp site, along with other new treats.

Continuing with what seems like the month for digital singles to be featured, California's Christ vs Warhol have returned with two new songs that serve as a preview of their forthcoming second album. You'll hear the new track "Into a New Ice Age," followed closely by another new digital single, "Thoughtless," from The Last Dance, whose recent string of singles will also lead to a new album release in the near future.

Then, we go a track deeper into the new album from Aurelio Voltaire (yes, that Voltaire!). Raised by Bats is his first foray into traditional deathrock and goth rock, and it is absolutely loaded with special guest musicians, including members of The Sisters of Mercy/The Mission UK, Ego Likeness, My Chemical Romance, Rasputina, The Dresden Dolls, and more. At Dragon Con recently, Voltaire responded to rumors that he might take a live band comprised of such people on the road, and he says the chances actually aren't that bad. Keep those fingers crossed!

Our second quality Italian act of the show, Horror Vacui, have also issued a Bandcamp teaser track -- entitled "5000" -- as a preview of what is to come from their next album, Return of the Empire, which will be released, along with a special limited 7" single, on their upcoming US tour this fall. Oh, how I wish I could get to one of those dates!

Next up is the 'Coffin debut of Former Humans, a California-based post-punk/deathrock act that features members of Bloodpenny and Hyena Motorcade, followed later in the set by two modern post-punk acts making their late debut on this show: Holograms from Sweden and The New Flesh from Oakland, California -- both with tracks from 2013 releases that I've finally gotten my hands on. Rounding out the set is the razor-voiced sound of Boston goth-punks Stranger, with a new song from their 2014 demo.

In the electronic realm, we'll examine two new releases from the burgeoning Charlottesville, Virginia scene, both related (in this case) to hometown heroes, Bella Morte. First up is a selection from the new EP from The Rain Within, the neo-darkwave/electro project of Bella Morte vocalist Andy Deane. We'll also check out a second new song from Gild the Mourn. The new band, comprised of (Bella Morte founding bassist) Gopal Metro & Angel Metro, create modern darkwave, based on timeless stories, inspired by ancient lore.

Finally, in the dark metal portion of the show, you'll hear a track from the long-awaited second album from Arkansas' Pallbearer. Foundations of Burden has just been issued on Profound Lore Records, and it continues to prove the band's ability to produce heart-wrenching, spirited doom anthems. For those in search of fresh black metal, you'll hear debuts from Sweden's Mortuus and Ukraine's Stryvigor, followed by brand new music from New Zealand's own "Apocalyptic Devil Rock" band, The House of Capricorn.

All of that, plus:  Another taste of the new Disemballerina album, Undertaker; a taste of the forthcoming Mentallo & the Fixer box set, Zothera; Atmosphere from the Guardians of the Galaxy score by Tyler Bates;  Selections from the local, dark metal, and post-punk vaults; and much more...

BONUS PODCAST: Compilation for the Dead 2014

Another Bonus podcast? Yes, indeed. The regular September episode of "Out ov the Coffin" will appear some time next week, but for now, please enjoy this podcast version of the Out ov the Coffin: Compilation for the Dead 2014.

"Compilation for the Dead," you say? Allow me to explain: Back in 2007, after attending Dragon Con for a couple of years, I really liked the idea of "convention exclusives" -- souvenirs that people could only get their hands on when they came to an event in person -- so I decided to make one of my own, and this series was born. This 2014 comp is the 8th installment so far.

Each year, I choose just under 80 minutes of new and current music to represent both my podcast and the current state of the goth & dark music scene. I then hand-craft 100 physical copies, and give them away to people that come to the goth-related panels that I moderate*. Once those are gone, I upload the mix as a podcast, so everyone else can hear it, too.

This year, I had the distinct pleasure of including two songs that had never-before appeared on CD: Gild the Mourn's "Shade," and one of my favorites from the new crop of singles from The Last Dance, "Scars." Those two join an impressive collection of current sounds that, to me, speak volumes for the health of this genre.

For those who just found out about this podcast at Dragon Con this year, I welcome you aboard. This is a special recap, but the next regular (monthly), brand new episode will launch next week, featuring even more great new music -- alongside classics, other current dark sounds, and even some of the selections that had to be cut from this compilation in order to fit on one disc.

In the meantime, if you're new to this podcast, I encourage you to check out some of the previous episodes (here or here), and to follow the show on Facebook.

Thanks,
Ichabod
