EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

While not a holiday special, this episode was recorded early on Christmas mo(u)rning, so it seems fitting that there be at least some holiday-related music -- never fear, though, it doesn't all follow that theme, and that which does is not suited for play over the PA system at your local mall. We start out, in fact, with a semi-related number from Create Christ, Sailor Boy, the new album from Hypnopazūzu, which sees the reunion of Current 93's David Tibet and Youth from Killing Joke. If not exactly festive, the song certainly deals with the same main character as the current (see how I did that?) holiday, so at least it's topical.

The first full set begins on a somber note, with a song played in memory of Cash Askew from Them Are Us Too, who was one of the 36 people killed in the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland on December 2nd. Although just a small tribute to people taken far too young in such a terrible way, I'd like to pay my respects to all of them here, those we knew, and those we never will.

The set continues with a track I recently unearthed (a bit late) from a project called Pretty in Pink. It's a catchy but downcast anti-lovesong, which leads into a more upbeat (by comparison, at least) deeper cut from the new Wingtips EP, Greayarea. London's The Agnes Circle returns next with another song from their new album Some Vague Desire , which will no doubt surface on next month's "Best ov 2016" episode. Stay tuned. Fresh local post-punk/darkwave music from Nashville's own AC makes it debut next, before we round out the set with a trip to the early '90s vaults.

The second set is basically your musical Christmas stocking, which I first fill with a certified classic from Porn Orchard, before digging up a pair of obscurities from everybody's favorite murder town, Twin Peaks. A brief Angelo Badalamenti theme dons its gay apparel, before a clip of actual cast members performing a warped rendition of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" comes crashing through the (lack of) snow. With our tongues still in our cheeks, we check in with Death In Rome, who supply the only Christmas parody of NON you're likely to hear, followed by a BRAND new take on the the year-ending classic "Auld Lang Syne," as released by The Cruxshadows JUST in time for Christmas (get it here). Finally, I round out this lump of sonic coal with a personal favorite from Hanoi Rocks, "Dead by X-mas."

Back to the serious music, the third set begins with more new music from Soft Kill's Choke album, followed by a taste of the new solo release from Sjöblom (vocalist of Sweden's The Exploding Boy). More new Nashville music from Electricks steps in next, with a taste of the darker side of this local new wave outfit, followed by your first taste of the new EP from the UK's FEHM. You're sure to see their Circadian Life on my Best ov list next month as well. The set then goes full deathrock with a deeper cut from Veil Vitric's new self-titled release, and another selection from the new Killed By Deathrock Vol. 2 compilation.

The dark metal portion of the show begins with new music from France's Alcest, whose forthcoming tour will see them traveling across the United States with The Body. For the vampyric black metal fans, a taste of the just-released new album from Crimson Moon comes next, followed by a classic from Monumentum. Two more new dark metal entries round out the set (as I catch up on 2016 releases). First, Baltimore's Unendlich, with a song from their new Scales of Existence album, followed by a taste of Austria's Karg, from their Weltenasche LP.

All of that, PLUS:  Newly-released soundtrack work from "Rogue One," "Penny Dreadful," and "Bates Motel"; Warped nods to the season at hand, up to and including goats screaming your (least?) favorite holiday classics; and more!

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

Last month's episode was, of corpse, focused specifically on the celebration of Halloween, which means that a great many new releases started to stack up over the past two months, and, as a result, this episode (and next month's) will be filled to the rim with fresh faces. We begin with new music from London's The Agnes Circle, whose new album Some Vague Desire offers a lush mixture of goth and post-punk style.

The first full set kicks off with a song from the much-anticipated new Soft Kill album, Choke. Having heard some of the new material on tour over the summer, it's been a long, but worthwhile wait. You can pick it up here, and catch them on tour in December with All Your Sisters. After that, we go for a deep, rich cut from
ROME's latest, The Hyperion Machine, before diving into traditional goth territory with new music from Portugal's NU:N, whose Naked Until Noema will delight fans of bands like Fields of the Nephilim or Love Like Blood. Germany's Golden Apes follow suit with a taste of their latest, M Ʌ L V S.

We do some catching up next, dipping back into the forgotten '80s vaults, with a track from the new Killed By Deathrock Vol. 2 compilation. This selection spotlights a catchy post-punk/wave track from UK act Flowers For Agatha, originally released in 1985. We then jump 30 years to 2015, picking up on a track from Minnesota's trad-goth act, The Rope, who initially came to my attention via the great compilation series, 33 Goth Bands You Should Know. Check those out!

The next set turns into darkwave/electronic territory, beginning with a spotlight on the current mini-tour from Bella Morte frontman Andy Deane's new synthwave project, The Rain Within. They'll play Nashville on December 4th, along with the other two bands you'll hear in the first half of the second set: The unique electro-goth approach of Nashville's own HR_Lexy, taken from their new Slave to the Light EP, followed by a new digital single from fellow Nashville act, FIRES (featuring members of Cryogen Second and Becoming the Devourer).

The set then turns to new music from a very catchy new Chicago band, Wingtips, whose Greayarea EP will no doubt be stuck in several people's car stereo's soon. Sinking into murkier waters, we then get a taste of the new Chasms album, On the Legs of Love Purified, which effectively combines shoegaze and industrial elements. Finally, we see the set close with a sadly-overlooked track from one of several Virginia acts featured this month, Decades/Failures.

Speaking of Virginia, the third set takes off with a brand new one from
True Body's Demo '16, before giving you a second taste of the new Belgrado album, Obraz. We then take a detour to the '80s vaults again for rarities from Screams for Tina and The Lucy Show, before jumping, with both feet, into another new track from The Bellicose Minds' new LP, The Creature. Finally, we go full-on Mexican Deathrock with a brand new track from CRVEL, taken from their new Sombras album.

While we're feeling a little heavier, you might just be convinced to try some dark metal, so the next set begins with a brand new one from Cast Away Souls, the latest album from Oakland's Cardinal Wyrm. Following with a curve ball, we're yanked back to 1995 for a bit of a classic from Sentenced, before getting some more California dark metal, this time from the one-man-band Mare Cognitum, whose new album, Luminiferous Aether, delves into the further realms of atmospheric black metal. The set concludes with the other new track that Ukraine's Drudkh contributed to their new split (with Grift), which you'll find under the title Betrayed By The Sun/Hägringar

All of that, PLUS: New music on the way out from Norway's Wardruna; Fresh theatrical soundscapes from "Stranger Things" composers Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein, both with and without their band S U R V I V E ; An 8-bit horror tribute from Comptroller; More music from The Venture Bros., courtesy of J.G. Thirlwell; A dip in the dark ambient vault; and more!

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

The 2016 "Out ov the Coffin" Halloween Special is here! RUN AND HIDE! Or, pull up a grave and take in over 3 hours of aural tricks and treats, including howliday-themed deathrock, goth, post-punk, darkwave, and dark metal songs, movie trailers, dialogue samples, soundtrack music, creepy effects, and more, all (g)hosted by yours truly.

This year's show digs a bit deeper for songs not usually unearthed, to be prematurely-buried alongside some of the essential 'Coffin classics. As always, there are a few recently deceased anthems, too, from the likes of
S U R V I V EAltar de Fey, The Bellicose Minds, and more. To keep the frights rolling, this episode is divided into 3 main sets. The first concentrates on goth, post-punk, darkwave, and deathrock; the second on horror punk, horror rock, and even more deathrock (because Halloween); and the third is a special '90s-black-metal-themed set, temporarily bringing back to life some of the glory days of the show, with a few related tracks from outside of the second wave thrown in for flavor.

While this show was being assembled, I received news of the passing of iconic horror host John Zacherle (aka Zacherley, The Cool Ghoul), so I allowed him the first and last words of this episode, as a small tribute.

R.I.P. John Zacherle (1918-2016)

EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

It feels as though it's been longer than a month since the last full episode, but travel, and all the good that it can bring, will do that to you. It is finally autumn, and it's good to be back. This episode begins with a small salute to the 30th anniversary of The Chameleons' classic album, Strange Times, before turning its attention to the pile of new music that has amassed since last we spoke...

First up in the realm of new music is Garden of Mary from Dallas, Texas, with a somber selection from their EP, The Agony In Memory. After that, we move to new music from another act celebrating 30 years right now, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, with the lead single from their new album, These Fleeting Moments, which sees the band reunited with original vocalist Oscar Herrera. After a couple of selections from the goth vaults, and one request, we slide into a new song from ROME's latest, The Hyperion Machine, which some have called the project's most rock-based album to date -- to that, I say: Seek out Jerome Reuter's old band, Mack Murphy & the Inmates, and you'll see how his roots make sense of it all. Finally, the set rounds out with a deeper selection from the the Rendez-Vous album, Distance.

The second full set begins with brand mew music from Detroit's acclaimed Ritual Howls, whose new album Into the Water was released into the wild just before my mad travels began. We then go one (great) track deeper into the latest album from All Your Sisters, before stepping things up further with some catchy new goth-punk from Australia's Death Church. Next up is a new song from New York's Pawns, taken from their recent split EP with Chicago's Cemetery. After a visit to the Japanese deathrock vaults with The Execute, we get a further taste of fresh post-punk from Portland's Spirit Host, before topping the set off with a Cocteau Twins classic.

The third set begins with new music from Italy's
Der Himmel Über Berlin, who came to my attention via a compilation from Venus Aeon Recordings entitled Vampyre. We then take a retro-flight with A Flock of Seagulls to continue the good fight against anyone who considers them a one-song band (shame on you). Our heroes in Ego Likeness sneak in just behind, with one of my recent favorites, "-geist," which has resurfaced on their new The Compass EPs collection. The 2-disc set gathers their out-of-print North, South, East, and West EPs, just in time to back the the band's forthcoming tour dates.

The set continues with new music from Nashville's own HR_Lexy, whose new album Slave to the Light will see said light next month. Following that, what I believe is the first band from Liechtenstein to ever appear on Out ov the Coffin
Evren Svren, gives you a taste his new album, Yolun Sonundaki Sahte Işık. Denver's Tollund Men, round out this fairly varied darkwave set with a deeper cut from their new Autoerotik cassette.

The final set turns its attention, as I have in recent weeks, to my mid-'90s dive into the realms of black metal, pulling out several certified classics from various shades of that spectrum. Not to be stuck in the past, though, the set begins with brand new music from Ukraine's Drudkh, taken from their new split (with Grift), entitled Betrayed By The Sun/Hägringar. Finally, the show closes with on a related note, with something from the romantic doom era (fight me), as momentarily made proud by my semi-annual nostalgia-targets, Celestial Season

* Side note: On the way out, I gave a brief plug for the "A Strange Day Post-punk Festival" 2017 next year in Olympia, Washington (starring ChameleonsVox), so here's that link to purchase early-bird tickets (while they last).

All of that, PLUS: Deeper soundtrack selections from recently-noteworthy visual-pieces; Selections from the new romantic, darkwave, goth, and 1979-cult-film-classics vaultsand more!
