EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

In honor of the 20th anniversary of his death, this episode begins with a two-part tribute to the musical legacy of Rozz Williams (1963-1998). Although most often remembered for his early work (as a teen) when he founded deathrock pioneers Christian Death, this year's tribute sidesteps the well-covered (but rightly lauded) territory of Only Theatre of Pain, in favor of highlighting some of the man's less talked about later work under the name, as well as some lesser-played early essentials, later solo outings, and experimental side projects such as Premature EjaculationBloodflag, and EXP, in which he played bass for a change.

The first section begins with music from the criminally-underrated 1993 Christian Death album, The Path of Sorrows, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, then moves along to his wonderful cover of Bowie's "Time," before launching into a full set including many of the above-mentioned acts, as well as the immortal classic "Flowers." For those playing along at home, the intro set to this episode clocks in at 13 minutes, while the first full set lands at an even 34 minutes. I'm sure you all see how I did that.

Moving into the second full set of the show, we meet new music from New York's Bambara, a band that has distilled their combination of Nick Cave/Birthday Party, early Swans, and noise-rock influences into a fluid concept album, the just-released Shadow on Everything. Also a band that should be appreciated live, you can catch them on tour in the US for the next couple of months. Following that, we move to the grittier side of ROME's new Hall of Thatch LP for a second taste, before visiting the vaults for a rarity from the final recording sessions of The Chameleons' first incarnation.

The second set continues with brand new music from two of Portland's current post-punk roster: First from Shadowlands' new release, simply entitled
002, and then dipping backwards to 2017's Vacant Daydream release from Over, whose new single was featured on last month's show. Finally, the set concludes with another "banger" (as the kids say) from Italy's Horror Vacui, whose third full-length New Wave of Fear continues their reign of goth-punk infection.

Set three starts with more deathrock, as well it should! Seattle's Nox Novacula is up first, with the lead track from their new self-titled EP, followed by another late pick-up from 2017, a taste of Sextile's Albeit Living, which makes our transition from post-punk territory to darkwave. A deeper, more mournfully-in-motion cut from the new Dancing Plague album, Pure Desperation, leads the wave, which crashes next into a newcomer, Boston's House of Harm, with music taken from their new self-tiled EP. Another taste of Silent EM's Foreign States cassette then leads us back to another latecomer to the show, music from Portugal's Iamtheshadow, taken from their 2017 album, All of Our Demons.

The legendary Irishmen of Primordial kick off the dark metal portion of the show with a deep cut from their brand new LP, Exile Amongst the Ruins, which sees the band throwing a few new curves into their well-established sound. We then go a track further into the new ones from Pennsylvania's Veiled and California's Gloam, before closing the set with something brand new from Italian black metal act Altar of Perversion. Giving one more nod to the memory of Rozz Williams, I chose the song "Behind Stellar Angles II" to represent their new Intra Naos album-- not only because it clocks in at exactly 13:34, but that didn't hurt its chances, either.

The show draws to a slow and pensive close with new music from French-Canadian act Neige et Noirceur (Snow and Darkness), with an epic-length ambient black metal piece taken from their new one, Vent Fantôme.

All of that PLUS: A nod to the 45th anniversary of a cult/b-horror gem, Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural; More time spent in the '70s horror and Czech new wave film and soundtrack vaults; recent dark ambient project connections; and more!
