The 'Best of 2013' episode is coming up in just two weeks, which means that this episode is crammed with last-minute additions to the new music realm. Certainly not to be left off the year-end list is the latest from Philadelphia's current goth/deathrock/post-punk heroes, Night Sins, whose 2nd full-length, To London or the Lake, has just seen release.

Meanwhile in Finland, a whole lot of traditional goth/deathrock is springing up as well. Masquerade topped Cvlt Nation's list of the year's best deathrock on the strength of their 2013 demo, from which you'll get a taste on this episode. Also lauded on that list was Spain's Belgrado, who recently issued their 2nd album, Siglo XXI.

For those looking for an Xmas Special this year, there simply wasn't enough new material to out-do last year's gift, so I've re-uploaded the 2012 Xmas Bonus Show. Get it HERE or HERE. Not to be a complete "Bah-Humbugger," though, I have included The Cruxshadows' new Christmas single on this episode, which is available for free (or pay-what-you-want) right HERE.

In the darkwave/electronic realm, you'll hear new material from Waves, the latest from Virginia's one-man project The Purge, alongside further new music from Nashville's own one-man dynamo, Becoming the Devourer. And, all the way from Belarus, you'll get your first taste of Cold In May's latest synthrock release, Dark Season.

In the realm of current dark metal, we'll dip further in to the latest from the much-talked-about new Cult of Fire album मृत्यु का तापसी अनुध्यान (good luck with that one!), before visiting some oft-overlooked modern doom classics, and trying out something from the brand new Thrall album, Aokigahara Jukai.

All of that, PLUS: Excellent new soundtrack music from Steven Hufsteter and Co.'s "Kiss of the Damned" and Javier Navarrete's "Byzantium" score; New dark ambient sounds from LyciaCaul & Hall of Mirrors, and Allesandro Parisi's Italian Horror-soaked soundscapes; Some sounds from down on Fascination Street; Some classics from the vault; and more.

It seemed fitting to give the onset of this episode an ethereal feel, settling into the atmosphere at strange rates, as the weather patterns slowly turned their focus to the cold, wet stillness of the oncoming winter. So, after an opening track from Coil, the show begins with an unusual new piece from Kinit Her, taken from their new Hyperion release, courtesy of Pesanta Urfolk.

While atmospheric selections will continue for a bit after that, and pick up towards the end of the show as well, never fear a lack of driving dark rock. Making their debut on this episode is the UK band Carnival Star, whose digital single "Black Rain Down" should sit comfortably with fans of gothic rock's most iconic forefathers. Not to be outdone, Finland's Beastmilk will give you another relentless taste of their widely hailed new album, Climax.

In the modern post-punk realm, you'll hear further new music from Wax Idols' latest album, Discipline & Desire, followed closely by some classic deathrock, leading into some modern, politicaly-driven deathrock from the infamous "Nuke York" band Anasazi, who have released several cassettes and even a flexi single into the underground this year.

In the electronic realm, Nashville's own brand new project Becoming the Devourer makes their debut on this episode with a track from the just-released EP, DecemberHoveringOut (get it here). BTD just did a couple of shows with Ego Likeness, showcasing a sound (and visuals) reminiscent of a post-rock attitude if it were applied to modern electro. Worth a listen, to be sure.

In the realm of fresh EBM, you'll hear a debut from Ukraine's Ginger Snap5, who offer an infectious sort of high-energy electro-industrial on their new Snapped By You album, followed by the closing track from the brand new System Syn album, No Sky To Fall, which has just been released on Metropolis Records.

At the dark metal end of the spectrum, you will hear one of the two new tracks from Ash Borer's new Bloodlands EP, followed by a deeper cut from the latest Monarque album, Lys Noir. Then, closing the show, Amarok's lengthy doom-laden contribution to the just-issued Amarok/Hell Split.

All of that, PLUS: Further explorations of the latest albums from Vaura and Silent Scream; Vault-robbed classics from Thergothon, Skinny Puppy, Swans, and even Japan; an accidental dip into early '80s creeping soundtrack horrors; and more.

This episode begins with a taste of the new Zola Jesus album, Versions, which is a collaboration with J.G. Thirlwell (Foetus, music for "The Venture Bros."), who arranged ten of vocalist/writer Nika Roza Danilova's songs for string quartet, with interesting results. A DVD of their performance at the Guggenheim in New York City was also pressed, and is available in limited quantities as a giveaway/bonus from select retailers with the purchases of the album.

Finally making its way on the show this time is the new Lycia album, Quiet Moments. Billed as a return-to-form for the long-dormant nearly-ambient goth/darkwave project, longtime fans have not been disappointed with the results, which grow from slow, moody pieces, to more animated electronic fare as the album builds.

Making their debut on this episode is Germany's LowCityRain, whose modern mixture of post-punk, new wave, and shoegaze has garnered a good deal of praise over the last few months, in advance of their self-titled new album's release. Speaking of high praise, we'll go a track deeper into the new Beastmilk album, Climax, which continues to appear on many a writer's forthcoming "Best of 2013" lists. You'll see it on my list as well.

Taking a turn for the electronic/industrial, you'll hear another new song from NOIR's new album, Darkly Near; however, if that's not hard enough for you, stay tuned for the 'Coffin-debut of Pharmakon, whose new EP Abandon is a sordid, uncomfortable wasteland of screams and noise that might pleasantly set your teeth on edge. Then, as we lean towards the metal portion of the show, you'll get your first taste of Order of the Shadow, Act 1, the latest industrial/metal infection from Psyclon Nine.

A rather non-traditional metal set begins with new music from the band Vaura. Something of a super-group, the band features members of Gorguts, Secret Chiefs 3, Kayo Dot, and Blacklist, the last of which being no strangers to this podcast. Their new Profound Lore album, The Missing, might best be described as "Agalloch gone post-punk." If that's not heavy enough for you, some new death-doom from Manifesting's Descension Through the Seven Forbidden Seals album should fill that void. You'll aslo hear another new cut from Cult of Fire, venturing further into their new album, मृत्यु का तापसी अनुध्यान.

All of that, PLUS: Further fresh music from Lux InternaSoror DolorosaGris, and Sewer Goddess; A spotlight on the current Ego Likeness US tour; some choice selections from the vault; and more.

With Halloween/Samhain behind us, this episode returns to bringing you mountains of new music to check out (alongside some classics and other current albums, of course). First up is a taste of the new full-length from NOIR, the latest band from Athan Maroulis (Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Spahn Ranch, etc.). The song I selected represents the most ethereal track on an album that leans more towards darkwave/electronic sounds, but it is one of the standouts for me, so I chose it to lead the episode this time.

Already one of my favorite albums of the year, you'll get a taste of the new Beastmilk album, Climax, which is raising eyebrows everywhere by building on the driving post-punk -- with almost psychedelic '60s/'70s goth overtones -- that they impressed us with on their Use Your Deluge EP. Set for release on November 29th on Svart Records, you can pre-order Climax here.

A couple of new singles land on this episode: First, Sweden's Principe Valiente are back with a new single, "She Never Returned," awash in the effects-swollen modern post-punk sound for which they've come to be known. Then, the (originally South African) band The Awakening have released a teaser (and a video) for their forthcoming album, in the form of the song "Fault." We'll also go a track deeper into the b-sides from the new ROME single, Hate Us and See if We Mind.

Also in the deeper cuts department, we'll further explore the latest from Chelsea Wolfe, IAM{X}, and Summoning. For some local flavor, you'll also get your first taste of the new Nashville band BloodDrive (featuring a member of Dessau), who have now released their first EP of post-punk/dark rock sounds. Get it here.

In the dark metal portion of the show, you'll hear new music from the UK's CODE, whose new album Augur Nox is sure to appeal to fans of Ved Buens Ende, Arcturus, and DHG (with whom they share a member). From the Czech Republic, the arcane writings of Cult of Fire make their debut on this episode, from their unpronounceable new album, मृत्यु का तापसी अनुध्यान, courtesy of Iron Bonehead Productions.

All of that, PLUS: New dark ambient/industrial tracks from Treha Sektori and Arditi, both taken from Heathen Harvest's new (and free for a limited time) Samhainwork II compilation; Overdue arrivals from Finland's Silent Scream and Portland Oregon's The Bellicose Minds; A spotlight on the southern leg of the Velvet Acid Christ & The Twilight Garden tour (which will hit Nashville on 11/11); some classics from the vault; and much, much more.

PODCAST: The Halloween Special 2013

[STREAM this episode right now on Mixcloud]
(or use the embedded player at the bottom of this post)

Good evening, boils and ghouls! It's that most wonderful time of the year again: Halloween! And no Halloween would be complete without a brand new Out ov the Coffin Halloween Special to drop into everyone's treat bags. It's my favorite show to create, because it's thoroughly stuffed with layers of songs & sounds that combine to fog your mind with just the right atmosphere for the season, as seen through the lens of goth, deathrock, darkwave, horror culture, dark metal, and the bloodless face pressed cold against your window at night.

In addition to many current & classic seasonal tracks, movie trailers, and horror samples, you'll notice the arrival of many recently deceased musical offerings on this episode. Just in time for Halloween, the brothers Calabrese, known to many as "The World's Greatest Horror Rock Band," are back with a brand new album, entitled Born with a Scorpion's Touch. Although this album sees the band experimenting with other areas of the exploitation film section (leather rebels and renegade bikers), there is still some great horror business to be done, and you'll hear it here, tonight.

Since the last episode, I had the distinct pleasure of seeing the legendary Italian Horror Soundtrack masters,
Goblin, live on stage for the first time in the USA. Needless to say, it was well worth the road trip, as they flawlessly rocked through a set riddled with the songs that put them on the horror map. Death Waltz Recording Company released a special Tour EP 2013 for the band, featuring new recordings of fan-favorites, as played by the current line-up -- which features 3 of the original members. You'll hear one of the updated versions on the way into this show.

Also new on this episode is your first taste of the band Rituaal, a new doom/black metal project featuring members of Father Befouled, Encoffination, Loss, and Mourner. Their self-titled, occult-obsessed debut 7" has just been released on Parasitic Records, and you'll step into that circle tonight. You'll also hear new experimental/dark ambient/noise tracks from Sewer Goddess and
Wolvserpent, and even a special Halloween version of The Venture Bros. opening theme, updated for the season by J.G. Thirlwell.

And just when you thought it was safe to stop listening, you'll get a Bonus New Wave Halloween Set at the end -- a tribute to the intersection of '80s Horror films, and the synth rock atmosphere that made them stick.

So, kill the lights in favor of candles, skip dinner in favor of candy, and take a sharp blade to a pumpkin as you drift into more than 3 hours of sonic Halloween spirit.

Having just returned from the singular experience of Stella Natura: The Light of Ancestral Fires II, a multi-genre festival held in the forest-draped mountains of the high Sierras, this episode will doubtless be colored by that experience. As a means of preservation, you will hear many of the bands that performed, along with a few campfire stories I've brought back home with me.

On that note, the show opens with a new song from Lux Interna, whose set took place late into the freezing night on Sunday, thickening the already substantial atmosphere of their sound, as displayed on their latest album, There is Light in the Body, There is Blood in the Sun.

Following closely behind the dark folk of Lux Interna is the title track from the brand new ROME single, Hate Us and See if We Mind. The 45-minute EP features not only this more traditional (and impressive) title track, but also two nearly 20-minute experimental tracks, as well as a more subdued acoustic ballad to round it out.

For the straight-ahead gothic rock fans, The Mission (UK) have returned to the scene with a new album entitled The Brightest Light. Hailed as more than a return-to-form, the album is actually being praised as a reinvention. Meanwhile, you'll hear further cuts from the new Soror Dolorosa and Brotherhood releases.

In the current post-punk vein, Philadelphia's Night Sins have just released a free teaser for their forthcoming 2014 album, in the form of the single To London of the Lake. You can get it here, and see the video for it here. And from the other side of the country, Oakland's Wax Idols make their debut on the show this time with a song from their brand new album, Discipline & Desire.

We'll also go further into the excellent new Chelsea Wolfe album, Pain is Beauty, and check out another track from Brazil's Escarlatina Obsessiva, who have just released a video for the song "Fakir." You can see that one right here. Not enough? You'll also get the latest in a series of free live cover versions given away by KTAOABC (Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat), who this time have turned in a rendition of Front 242's "Kampfbereit." Get that one here.

In the dark metal portion of the show, you'll hear the debut of California's Weightlessness, taken from their forthcoming Graceless Records release, Of Lachrymose Grief. And we'll close the show with an extended cut from the new Wolvserpent double-album, Perigaea Antahkaran, which should help send everything home in a properly strange, atmospheric manner.

All of that, PLUS: Spotlights on the October tours of the legendary acts Goblin and Danzig; Fresh dark ambient rituals from The Netherlands' Kave and Poland's Inner Vision Laboratory (both taken from the new Kalpamantra compilation The Black Plague); A link to some possibly overlooked Lisa Gerrard material; and much, much more.
