EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

Welcome to the May 2018 edition of Out ov the Coffin. This episode begins with a small nod to the larger than life legacy of Ian Curtis, who took his own life 38 years ago this month. It's hard to believe that a man beloved by so many in the present day has been gone for almost twice as long as he ever lived, but that's a testament to the enduring power of his words and Joy Division's music.

The first full set begins with brand new music from Soft Kill. The band's new album, Savior, which also happens to be Profound Lore Records' 200th release, has gained a lot of accolades right out of the gate. From there, we dip back a few years to pick up an overlooked current, and unconventionally-goth, artist, Eric Vain, whose single "Savin'" has been stuck in my head for weeks now. We then visit the gothic rock vaults for some of the earliest recordings from Rosetta Stone's catalogue, before catching up with another recently-discovered (by me, at least) current act, Virginia's Unmaker -- who are currently working on a new full-length album, but until then, their 2015 demo single will have to suffice.

Minnesota's Grave Society helps to round out the first full set with a debut track from their new EP, Act I: Dictum Nyctophilia, continuing to carry the torch for more guitar-based goth rock, then Florida's Astari Nite ultimately closes the set with their catchy new digital single, "Sunday Queen." You can find it on their Bandcamp page

Moving into the second full set of the show, we twice dip into more new music from New York's Bambara, taken from their new Shadow on Everything LP. I just had the pleasure of seeing the band live again, and I recommend catching them while they're on tour in the US, too. We then hear a second selection from the new Seattle deathrock act Nox Novacula's self-titled EP, followed by two debuts: California's Detoxi steps in first with a track from their anthemic Death of a Nation EP, followed by some new Australian post-punk from Tocsin's 2018 demo. Italian deathrock masters Horror Vacui then take over with the title track from their new LP New Wave of Fear, before Denver newcomers Weathered Statues close this mostly deathrock set with a song from their brand new Borderlands album.

Set three takes on a mostly darkwave and industrial mantle, starting off with the first new release in too many years from (my favorite band) The Cure, the surprisingly-cool remix album Torn Down. Unlike most remix collections, this one succeeds, taking a track from each album so far, tearing it down (as it were), and giving the song a new twist. I surprised myself by going with the Wild Mood Swings selection, the standout lead track, "Want," seen in a more industrial light this time, with an increased sense of urgency.

Continuing to ride the darkwave, we revisit Sally Dige's 2017 album Holding On before taking another sip from House of Harm's self-titled cassette. Next up: New music from Los Angeles darkwave/post-punk act Second Still, taken from their newly released Equals. The final two tracks in the set provide, I think, and interesting side road on the way to the final act of this episode. First up is a Leonard Cohen tribute/cover taken from Seeming's 2017 Talk About Bones EP, which is followed by an almost-forgotten selection from the vault, the beautifully constructed "Song of Solomon" from Loretta's Doll. The track features a reading of the infamous titular piece by Orson Welles, set quite tastefully to a pulsing industrial beat.

The dark metal portion of the show begins with another taste of Summoning's latest album, With Doom We Come, but if Austrian Tolkien worship isn't quite your speed, we quickly shift gears to Greek black metal, in the form of Varathron's new Patriarchs of Evil. Portland's Shrine of the Serpent (which gathers players from several other noteworthy PDX acts) are up next with a first look at their new death/doom/sludge LP Entropic Disillusion, which leads nicely (IMO) to a classic from My Dying Bride's early '90s death/doom period. After a break, the episode concludes with new music from the difficult-to-pigeonhole, metallic post-punk Seattle band Nostalgist, who grabbed Aesop Dekker (Worm Ouroboros, ex-Agalloch) to play drums on their latest, Disaffection.

All of that PLUS: Selections from the perhaps-forgotten, turn-of-the-century dark ambient/experimental sounds of record labels like Middle Pillar Presents, Ventricle, and Dragon Flight; An anniversary nod to the unsung Bill Paxton horror classic, "Mortuary"; and more!
