EPISODE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS:

This month, we start with a look back at one of the greatest works in the extensive catalog of The Legendary Pink Dots, a band as prolific as they are (sadly) underrated. Although it can be admittedly difficult to jump in just anywhere in their library and be able to latch on, the band's 1987 album Any Day Now is one that I often recommend as a great place to start, so the newly remastered and expanded edition just released by Metropolis Records gets the spotlight this time, with one of my personal favorites and a bonus rarity that is only to be found on this version.

The first full set begins with new music from Them Are Us Too, who completed work on their Amends album as a way of providing closure for a promising career cut short, following the tragic death of founding member Cash Askew in the Ghost Ship fire of 2016. Rough recordings of her own performances were mixed with that of friends and family members to realize what would have been the band's second album. The result, I must say, far exceeds expectations, as the surprisingly fast-paced lead single (which also has a new video) has already claimed a spot among my favorite songs of 2018. I can't stop listening to it.

The set continues with newly-recorded music from A Flock of Seagulls, who created orchestral versions of many of their best songs for their new Ascension LP. Two newcomers from Texas are up next: First, Twin Tribes give us some solid new post-punk from their Shadows album, followed by Temple of Angels, wearing their Chameleons influence proudly on a track from last year's self-titled release. Alex Reed (Seeming, ThouShaltNot) then steps in with one of his earliest works -- written as a 15-16 year old, but only recently recorded -- as part of a new collection called The Gothic (available as a free perk for joining his new Patreon). As the title implies, the album has more of a directly gothic style, and it works quite well. Florida's Asatri Nite rounds out the set with a deeper cut from their new Midnight Offerings album.

The second set begins with fresh UK post-punk/goth rock from NAUT, taken from their new Raise the Lights EP, a release that drips confidence and energy from the start. I catch up on some music from Germany's Bleib Modern next, taken from their 2014 EP Lows, before jumping 20 years prior for a classic from Children on Stun's 1994 Overland EP. Oakland's The Ink Bats arrive next with a taste of their 2017 LP Loss, which leads us to the first of two stops for this episode in 1989, this one from Little Nemo. Finally, the set rounds out with a (surprise?) nod to "The Crow," which I recently re-watched after god knows how long. Seeing it again made me dig hard in the vaults for a super-rare early 2000s track from Keima that had been directly inspired by the film. And then, of corpse, I had to dig up Graeme Revell's score for the subsequent talk break.

Set three begins with a deeper cut from Pure Desperation by Washington's Dancing Plague, partly in honor of their upcoming tour, which will see the band playing Nashville (among other places) in November (details forthcoming). We then go deeper into the latest from Chicago's Panic Priest, providing yet another solid piece of modern darkwave. Off to France next for something from new-ish from Lovataraxx, who provide an interesting blend of styles on their Kairos album, before looking back at a five-year classic from New York's NOIRShadows Beloved then make their 'Coffin debut, with the lead track from The Quiet Machines, before we once again look back on a vault-selection from 1989, this time a floor-commander from The Fair Sex

The dark metal portion of the show begins with a classic this time, because, let's face it, I re-discover how great Anathema is every few years. First up in the realm of new material is the opening track from Drudkh's new album, Їм часто сниться капіж (They Often See Dreams About the Spring) -- and to the surprise of nobody, Ukraine's favorite sons are still excellent. New black metal from Sweden's Vanhelga comes next, from their new LP Fredagsmys, followed by a premiere from Portland's latest super-group, Khôrada. If you were wondering what became of the guys from Agalloch after their split, three of the four are to be found here, and the result does not disappoint. I didn't know what style to expect from the Salt LP, but I am pleased.

Finally, the whole show draws to a close with the opening track from Yob's Our Raw Heart, an album that almost didn't come to light, given the near-death experience that voclist/guitarist Mike Scheidt underwent. Perhaps you'd like to read more about that here while you take in the full piece.

All of that PLUS: Cult cinema anniversary nods to "Phantasm II" (30th anniversary this month) and "The Devil Rides Out" (50th anniversary this month); Further cinematic call-backs, unsolicited reviews, trivia, and more!
