Given the current state of things right now, I can only hope this episode of "Out ov the Coffin" finds you well. Whatever the case may be, perhaps the right music can distract you a bit from the world outside your window. To that end, we begin with brand new music from Clan of Xymox, the title track -- as it happens -- from their new album, Limbo. I'm sure you can relate to some of the themes they've tackled on this one, and with any luck, we will see them on tour in the US early next year (including a stop in Nashville in March).

Following that pattern, the first full set begins with the title track from the new Exile EP by Italy's Hapax, some fresh post-punk/goth that we can only assume was constructed during, and influenced by, the lockdown as well. From there, we have a premiere from California's
Ashes Fallen, taken from their well-titled new LP, A Fleeting Melody out of a Fading Dream. We then visit the Mexicali post-punk scene for a taste of Silent,'s new Modern Hate album, before taking a leap all the way back to the mid-'80s Serbian post-punk scene for one from the vaults. In this case, we hear from an obscure act called Morbidi I Mnoći whose videos have surfaced online, but who seem to have no official albums released. Curious, but that is the beauty of mining music on the internet, right? We then close the set with a pair of more lo-fi deathrock and goth releases -- new bands that may very well sound like artifacts from the past -- first from Texas act Altar of Eden's Chimeras cassette, then from Greek band Grey Gallows' new Garden of Lies album.

Set two leads us down a more dreamy electronic path, woven from threads of darkwave and synth, touching on some industrial rock, then easing you awake again. Kælan Mikla is first, with the latest single from their forthcoming album, Undir Köldum Norðurljósum. Portland's Ritual Veil slide in next, with a track from their new Keep Looking Down EP, followed by a collaborative single from Raygun Romance feat. System Syn. After a period of relative silence, The Rain Within make their return with the new synth-laden single entitled "Forward in Reverse." Jumping back on to the show with an old-school radio ID spot to boot, we have a new track from New York's A Cloud of Ravens, as remixed by fan-favorites Ritual Howls. Finally, we close the set with a new one from the man himself, Gary Numan, whose new album Intruder will put him out on the road this fall, as long as people actually get vaccinated and we can have nice things again. ::side-eye::

Set three throws a big, goth-nerd spotlight on Dragon Con 2021, as one of the largest fandom conventions in the country returns to in-person status this labor day weekend (Sep. 2nd-6th) in Atlanta, Georgia. As you may know, I am the Assistant Director of the Horror Track at Dragon Con, (now on Instagram) and I host the annual goth panels (among other things). This year's main goth panel will feature several special guests from regional goth and deathrock bands, alongside members of this year's performing acts: Entertainment, Tears for the Dying, The March Violets (yes, THAT March Violets), Vision Video (featuring "Goth Dad" himself from TikTok), and Aurelio Voltaire -- the last two of which will be playing live around the con this year. The rest are guests exclusive to our panel! Then, you'll get some great new neo-classical metal from Valentine Wolfe (who does amazing live scores for silent films, which they will do again this year for 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'!), and a new Dragon Con exclusive video-game-soaked-EBM track from The Gothsicles -- these two bands will be appearing together on our "Unlocked: Music to Play in the Dark" panel.

In addition to the aforementioned music panels, there will also be "An Hour with Goth Dad" (aka TikTok star and musician Dusty Gannon from Vision Video) and "William Stout: Designer of the Living Dead'" which will see me moderating a discussion with William Stout (the father of Tarman and many other creatures) about his production design work for the greatest film of all time, "The Return of the Living Dead!" Most of the above-mentioned panels are to be held
in the Horror Track's Main Room on the 8th floor of the Westin, but see the handy list of panels I have referenced below (with a bonus). For all the additional info you may need, go get the Dragon Con App, and I hope to see some of you there!

Moving on to set four, we enter the realms of dark metal, startring with a triple-anniversary celebration this month. Two of the most influential albums of 1996 for me, personally, plus one very cool semi-obscurity that more people should know, ALL turn 25 years old this month. First up is
Cradle of Filth's vampyric/gothic/black metal masterpiece, Dusk... And Her Embrace, which ticked every box imaginable for barely-legal me that year. SAMAEL's Passage album is next, having divided fans upon its release, but still stands as a testament to unconventional approaches in metal, as well as a showcase of some of the band's best songwriting. Lesser known, but always worth exploring, is the '90s black metal solo project of Katatonia founder Anders Nyström (aka Blackheim, now Blakkheim) Diabolical Masquerade, whose Ravendusk in My Heart album also earns its quarter-century accolades this month.

The rest of the dark metal set focuses on new releases, including Russian post-punk black metal act
Сруб (Srub), who have returned with Скверна (Skverna), and the second single from Wolves in the Throne Room's new album Primordial Arcana. Then, to close the show, we hear new music from US black metal band Vampirska, taken from their new split release, The Drowning Void.

All of that PLUS: New soundtrack work from M. Night Shyamalan's latest, "Old," the new "Fear Street" period-horror trilogy, and "Masters of the Universe: Revelation"; The 40th anniversary of the Fulci classic "The House By the Cemetery"; Color commentary, unregulated gushing about the music that shapes us, please for sanity, and more.
