Out ov the Coffin: PODCAST: June 16th, 2011

Now entering the second week of "'Bodcasting" the show from "The 'Bodcave," (go ahead, laugh. You love puns!) this episode landed on the same day as The Nashville Scene's cover story on the loss of WRVU. I encourage any local listeners to pick-up a copy and check out the extensive coverage they gave to memorializing the cultural force that the station was while it held the airwaves, including analysis from both sides of the fence, and a glimmer of hope from the WRVU Friends and Family organization, who bring us the news that there are still several ways in which the not-yet-completed sale will be officially contested.

New to the show this week: Brand new music from Clan of Xymox, whose album "Darkest Hour" landed this week, alongside the latest from Bella Morte, entitled "Before the Flood." Both are out now via Metropolis Records. Also premiering this week was a track from The UK's Ulterior, a band that generated quite a buzz following their appearance at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen festival in Germany last week, and another act that graced the stage at that same festival, ROME. This time, the b-side of their new "Our Holy Rue/The Merchant Fleet" 10" was featured, showcasing what felt like a nice Bowie-esque twist on their traditional neo-folk sound.

Also featured this week: A nice set of more recent deathrock, some strangely dark and obscure French entries from the metal side, and some solid post-punk for good measure.

Out ov the Coffin: PODCAST: June 9th, 2011

This was a dark week for the DJs at WRVU Nashville -- and, for once, when I say "dark," I don't mean that in a good way. This week, Nashville lost the battle to save the nearly 60-year-old cultural institution that was our beloved 91.1 FM. This past Tuesday afternoon, an hour after taking us off the airwaves, Vanderbilt Student Communications announced that, despite a unanimous public outcry against the idea, our broadcast license had been sold. There would be no final broadcasts or respect(s) paid. They simply pulled the plug on us, and by midnight, it was all a memory.

I should note, however, that a new effort is underway to appeal and reverse this week's events. More about that can be found here: http://savewrvuradio.wordpress.com/latest-news/

The future of the station from which every episode of "Out ov the Coffin" has been broadcast -- up until this week, at least -- is unclear at this point. We are told that WRVU will re-emerge in the Fall as an HD radio station, while retaining its online presence as well. It has not been said who will be invited back in the Fall, and the question of whether an HD broadcast is worth doing in the first place hangs quite heavily in the air right now. Do you know anybody with an HD Radio? I didn't think so.


BUT, here's the positive spin: "Out ov the Coffin" will continue either way. In fact, I refuse to miss a beat. The show has been offered here as a downloadable podcast since February of this year, and that will not stop. New episodes will still be made each week and posted in the same fashion as usual -- albeit uncensored now (BONUS!). Really, unless you live in Nashville, the dynamic really isn't changing much. While there will be no live stream to catch, the recorded show will be posted for download at roughly the same time each week.

This week's episode is arriving a couple of days late, but since I still plan to continue making each episode available in time for the weekend, I will continue to create them on Thursday nights and post them soon after. So, this week's show is labeled June 9th, just for consistency.

New to the show this week was hot-off-the-presses fresh music from ROME, whose new 10" vinyl release, "Our Holy Rue / The Merchant Fleet" was released this week. It's strictly limited to 999 copies, so act fast if you want to get your hands on one. Also walking in this week: A brand new single from Adoration, which serves as a teaser for their forthcoming second album, and more new music from Peter Murphy's latest solo release. Finally, I closed this week's show with something new from A Story of Rats, which I encourage everyone to give their full attention, particularly in a state where you'll be receptive to going on a dark ambient journey.

PLAYLIST & PODCAST: Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

I really enjoyed this episode in particular. I'm not sure why, but it just seemed riddled with good musical examples of the styles that have held my attention most lately. Maybe it was due to a few new sounds I'd discovered this week, or some that I'd returned to after a short absence. Maybe it was something in the air? Either way, it has been preserved (below) for your listening pleasure.

This week brought a new entry from Implex Grace, whose larger dark ambient piece "Diamond of Disappearance" seems largely influenced by the aural qualities of the very first episode of "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe." Don't scoff. Those who know me well know how much I love many of the less-often-considered aspects of that show, such as the background paintings, the implied back-stories, and to a large extent, the seldom-heard-on-its-own score music. At any rate, I couldn't resist dark ambient music based on that.

Also new this week was some fresh goth rock/peace-punk from Lost Tribe, who hail from Richmond, VA. We also heard deeper cuts from the latest releases from Peter Murphy, Christine Plays Viola, Brighter Fires, Disemballerina, and Loss, along with some recently discovered older obscurities from around the world.

PLAYLIST & PODCAST: Thursday, May 26th, 2011

This week's episode brought us new music from one of the forefathers himself, Peter Murphy, whose new album, "Ninth," will see release on June 7th in the US. For those in Nashville, there will be a CD Release Party for that at the +SALVATION+ Goth Prom this Sunday night. CD and Poster giveaways will happen, and Ichabod will be one of the DJs for the night.

Also new this week was the music of Portland's Disemballerina, who have a curious name, for sure, but also a very interesting sound that mixes gothic chamber music with acoustic guitar work that reveals a metal background. They've generated quite a buzz recently.

Reaching further into the indie music world's recent tendency towards darker, more goth-friendly music, Austra gave us their new single, "Beat and the Pulse." It's also been talked about quite a bit in recent months, with it's very electronic roots, topped with darker, more ethereal, female vocals.

Australia's Moon debuted this week as well, with a taste of their brand of cold, slow-moving black metal. The show closed with a spotlight on the experimental doombience of Wolvserpent, who make their way to Nashville tonight, at Little Hamilton.

A lot of great new music emerged on this week's show:

First, the original line-up of Bella Morte (Andy Deane and Gopal Metro) have been working behind the scenes on a new post-punk/post-goth project called Brighter Fires. If you've ever wondered what might have been if the two had continued to work together as Bella Morte, Brighter Fires answers that question, and then some, with excellent results. Their first single ("From the Sky") from the forthcoming album was featured on the show this week, and it is currently available as a free download on their Bandcamp site (linked below). Check it out.

Also new to the show this week were entries from the post-punk/indie-goth side, from the UK's Esben & the Witch and Italy's Christine Plays Viola, who together started to push this week's episode into a theme of witchcraft that continued to crop up throughout -- especially towards the end of the program. I can never resist the emergence of a good theme, as you know, and this is also reflected in the new flyer.

Germany's Ghostfog gave us a new industrial landscape, mixed with some post-punk guitar lines and metallic vocals, while Nashville's own funeral-doom band Loss finally gave the world a taste of their long-awaited full-length, "despond," which sees its official release this Month on Profound Lore Records, Canada.

This week, a new entry arrived from Skinny Puppy founder, and cult-film-star-of-late, OhGr, whose latest solo work is entitled "Undeveloped." We also heard from Zombi, whose Italian-Horror-inspired roots have lately given way to something a bit more electronic in nature, while still retaining a bit of that reminiscent flavor.

Speaking of horror fandom, Nashville area listeners may be interested to know that this weekend is the annual Full Moon Tattoo and Horror Festival. The guest of honor this year is Malcolm McDowell, who will join a long list of horror-related guests. He will also be appearing tonight at the Belcourt Theatre to introduce a special screening of Rob Zombie's "Halloween" reboot.
